Winehouse in the doghouse after 'atrocious' tour debut
2007-11-15 17:57:00
Amy Winehouse, © 2007 Caroline van Oosten de BoerI've never really hopped on the Amy Winehouse bandwagon, as you can probably tell from me not ever featuring her here, but apparently I'm not alone. Her voice is nice, but something about the fact she looks like Sarah Silverman after about 10 years of heroin use rubs me the wrong way.Winehouse in the doghouse after 'atrocious' tour debutYahoo.comONDON (AFP) - Troubled soul singer Amy Winehouse kicked off her 17-date tour with a shambolic performance that saw fuming fans booing and marching out, reports said Thursday.ADVERTISEMENTThe concert at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, was a chance for the 24-year-old to get back to singing and put her woes behind her.Winehouse has had "health issues" -- widely reported to be drug and alcohol abuse -- and her party-loving husband Blake Fielder-Civil is being held on grievous bodily harm and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice charges. But Wednesday's gig at the NIA, which can ...

Ryan Braun, Kate Tucker, The Mugs
2007-11-13 06:22:00
Got an email today from Kofi Annon telling me I'm could receive compensation from the United Nations...man these spammers are getting creative. Was pretty happy to see Ryan Braun take home the NL Rookie of the Year hardware yesterday. Braun, a third basemen for the Brewers, edged out the phenomenal shortstop of the Rockies, Troy Tulowitzki, by only two votes. It really could have gone either way, but chicks dig the long ball, so Braun had Tulowitzki in that category. After being called up in May, Braun went on to hit .324 with 34 HR and 97 RBI, in addition to slugging .634, the highest percentage for any rookie in MLB history. Unfortunately, his 26 errors were also tied for tops in the league. Once Braun shores up his defense he'll be a cornerstone franchise third basemen without any doubt. Now, if only he could grow out some Robin Yount-esque facial hair he'd look as cool as Penguin's center Maxime Talbot. If you're in need of an afternoon pick me up later today, put down that Snick ...

Bring Back The Guns, Old Time Relijun
2007-11-10 21:31:00
If you're in a Pixies or Minutemen mood tonight you might want to take a chance on Bring Back The Guns.Bring Back The Guns is an experiment in messing around with music at its molecular level: ignoring rules whenever possible and coming up with songs that obey their own whims. Whatever works is extracted from as many traditions as possible, the elements are hurled at each other as hard as possible, and then everyone stands back to see what happens. It's usually fast, short and barely-contained, with weird rhythms knocking up against big melodies, tripping over not-quite-but-almost over-the-top guitar work. Influences? They're present, but never aped. The Pixies is certainly there in the big guitar melodies, but ultimately, Bring Back The Guns sounds like Bring Back The Guns. Bring Back The Guns has toured with The Toadies, The Octopus Project, Old Time Relijun and Danielson among others.Bring Back The Guns - "The Art of Malnutrition"Bring Back The Guns - "Radio Song #4"Bring Back Th ...

Saturday Night Tunes
2007-11-10 21:14:00
It's Saturday night, and I've got nothing particularly interesting going on as I sit here enjoying a Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat beer, digging through the inbox for some post material and idly watching the Florida-SC game. Being a music blogger who lives in rural Northern Wisconsin, I can't exactly catch a taxi and head down to the Bowery Ballroom to see what's going on tonight. I can't even imagine what it must be like to have this hobby but live in a town like Austin or New York. At least fellow Wisconsinian Ryan lives a few hours south in the happening town of Madison.Regardless of the uneventfulness of my evening and my distant proximity to any cool music scene, there's quite a bit of good music to pass along tonight...Hanging out on Myspace this evening? If so, drop by Mark Minelli's space and check out this folk/indie/acoustic talent from Chicago/Cincinatti. I was surprised by the "Marleyness" of this white boy from the Midwest. Slap it on during your pregame for the bar s ...

One-Third of Popular Songs Refer to Substance Abuse
2007-11-08 21:18:00
Photo: Carrie Underwood...not as wholesome as your mama's apple pie?Hopped on the ol' Internet to check my mail one last time before bed to see if that big fantasy football trade went through (er, materialized...who knew I couldn't sell Willis McGahee?) and happened across this story on Yahoo's front page:One-Third of Popular Songs Refer to Substance AbuseTHURSDAY, Nov. 8 (HealthDay News) -- Could country music be worse for kids than rock music? If you judge by the number of alcohol and drug references in songs, a new study suggests the answer could be yes.Researchers who looked at the bestselling songs in several genres from 2005 found that 37 percent of top country songs featured references to drugs or alcohol, compared to just 14 percent of rock songs."It's not like country music is as wholesome as mom and apple pie," said Ralph DiClemente, a professor of public health at Emory University who's familiar with the study findings. But country couldn't hold a candle to rap music, ...

Fantatic MP3 Goodie Bag
2007-11-08 19:18:00
Aaron Stout: This emerging 27-year-old reveals vivid images of travel, heartbreak and spirituality in whatever he’s working on. All of this, encrypted with brooding layers and ethereal sounds, further the listener's experience."The Coronation""Fountain of Youth"Cannonball Jane: "Cannonball Jane is the coolest one woman band I’ve heard in a long time. This is what Carole King would sound like if she had a sampler and was really into Francoise Hardy. I love her recordings and can't wait for more!” – Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill & Le Tigre"Take It To Fantastic" Capgun Coup: "The Capgun Coup story starts three years ago in suburban Omaha, Nebraska, where Elsasser and Martin began playing music together. Mutual boredom coupled with an interest in avant noise would fuel the duo's early collaborations, but after a move downtown and after the addition of two members (Matz on bass and Ohlsson on drums), Capgun Coup became less interested in white noise, and completely enamored w ...

Featured Artist: Love in October
2007-11-07 06:21:00
Would it be embarrassing to admit that I think I pulled a hamstring muscle showing my boss how to do a karate kick out of the "Get Fit with Chuck Norris" a week ago? Because I'm pretty sure that's what I did.Featured Artist: Love in OctoberThe fact that that Love In October has already been nominated for an MtvU Best Music On Campus Woodie, have been a Paste video of the day, and more and more people are finding their catalog of fun, home made movies speaks to something great about this band: they have their fingers in a little bit of everything artistic. Their debut full- length, Pontus, The Devil, and Me, is set to be unleashed January 22, 2008, and showcases LiO’s ability to diversify all the subgenres found in pop.“It doesn’t bother me to say that we’re a Swedish pop rock band, actually it bothers me more to be called a ‘band’ because that limits you to the scope of music. I see LiO venturing into other artistic areas over the years. I want us to be known as creators, ...

Introducing Fever Marlene
2007-11-04 13:33:00
Tony Romo, Guitar Hero? One of the first things I did when we moved to our new place was to put two TVs in the living room. Not that I'm a huge fan of television; in fact, I pretty much only watch it for sports or NBC comedies. But having the versatility to watch two games at the same time on Sunday is pretty top notch in my book. I'm currently watching both the Packers-Chiefs and Vikings-Chargers games. Favre has looked pretty terrible against the Chiefs so far throwing two picks, and Brooks Bollinger has come into the game against the Chargers for the Vikings in place of just-injured Tavaris Jackson. Neither game really warrants watching right now, which is why I'm blogging for a couple minutes during the half. Thank God we've got a Super Bowl quality matchup coming later in the afternoon between Indy and New England.Received an email from Spitzer. They are two brothers from France who play electronic music to make people dance. You can check out their Myspace page here and downlo ...

You're going to be embarrassed when you realize I'm Wilmer Valderama
2007-11-03 23:14:00
My special lady friend and I just finished our Saturday movie night with Knocked Up, and honestly, it was a lot better than I expected. Another quality flick from Judd Apatow. We waited awhile to see this because we had either heard really good things or really bad things about it. Luckily, most of our thoughts fell into the "really good things" category.Aside from Stranger Than Fiction, Knocked Up was one of the more refreshing movies I've seen in the past year. Sure it's got the crass, stoner humor and language, but a lot of the humor is smart and most importantly, real. It's one of the few movies that make you take a look at your current situation and say "you know, things aren't that bad, are they?". It doesn't exactly make me want to hurry up and have a kid, but it certainly made you think about what that day is going to be like. Also, you have to love a movie that references Matisyahu and has "We Are Nowhere and It's Now" from Bright Eyes playing in one of the scenes.Remembe ...

Writers Say Strike to Start Monday
2007-11-02 18:49:00
Getting ready to stop writing for the evening here and settle down to watch the finale of Meerkat Manor (yes, seriously - the only other option is watching Ghost Whisperer, and it's NOT for the plot lines).I've been following this story for a couple of days now and it gets more fascinating the longer it draws on. Will be interesting next week to see whether or not some of these shows will have to shut down and revert to reruns until their writers get paid. It's about time somebody pays the writers, especially for great shows like The Late Show and Conan O' Brien. I mean, who wouldn't want to pay the guy who thought up the Walker Texas Ranger lever?Writers Say Strike to Start MondayLOS ANGELES, Nov. 2— Hollywood’s two decades of labor peace shattered Thursday night, as movie and television writers declared they would embark on an industrywide strike for the first time since 1988, when both writers and Teamsters walked out.The writers’ union announced this afternoon that the s ...
