Acoustic Vs. Electric Guitars: Which Guitar Is The Best To Start Learning With?
2007-11-27 00:16:00
One of the most common questions I get from new guitarists is, "should I begin on the acoustic or electric?" To be honest, there really is no right or wrong answer. But let's look at some of the differences to help us decide. First, the biggest question is what kind of music do you like? If you want to learn to play like Metallica or Greenday, then it's obvious you need to get an electric guitar. If you want to play like James Taylor or Dave Matthews, then an acoustic would be the best route to go. Parents, if you are helping your child decide what is best for them, be sure to ask them what kind of music they want to learn. Also, ask them if they know which kind of guitar they would like and why. Asking these questions has always helped me figure out which guitar would be a better fit for my students. Sometimes, people just want to play the guitar because it's "cool"-- or because they want to be a rock star. Or, maybe a friend is learning to play drums and they want to start a ba ...

Do you really need to spend any of your valuable time learning guitar scales and theory? The argument that a guitarists will use to not learn any type of theory is that they will be in danger of losing there originality. They won't be able to be or sound like themselves, they will be caught up and constrained within the confines of rules and regulations. The only problem with that kind of thinking is that you are in danger of not growing and progressing as a musician. All basic lead guitar instruction courses at the root level will tell you to learn chords, scales and arpeggios because they know that you will gain a greater understanding of how the music process inter-grates and works together, you will expand your playing with new possibilities and concepts, rather than the reverse. And here is the most important factor. A lot of self taught musicians tend to suffer from episodes of self doubt because of not knowing what to play, which in turn can breed insecurities and lack of self con ...

"How Do I Play Solos?"
2007-11-19 09:03:00
Having taught hundreds of students over the years "How do I play solos" seems to be one of my most frequently asked questions, especially from younger students. Admittedly it's a slightly vague question, but I read the question to mean, "I want to play cool solos, sound great, look great and impress everyone." Well if that's what you mean, good for you! After all, the reason we all started playing the guitar was to look cool and attract women....wasn't it? Ok, so that's only part of it. I hope like me you also just happen to love the sound of a good solo. If this is the case then I can help you.Let's start by getting the bad news out of the way. I won't mention names, but I know of some teachers out there who answer the question "How do I play solos" by giving the student pages and pages of licks and riffs and no explanation of theory behind them. This approach may slightly help to improve your "bag of tricks" but you'll always find it hard to pull a solo out the bag with this m ...

Learn to Play Lead Guitar
2007-11-19 08:53:00
I'm often asked by students, "How do you play lead guitar?" Well it takes practise of course, but we all want to jump in the deep end and play like Steve Vai immediately. It's probably better to learn to walk first before you can run, and so I've outlined a few good ideas to help you begin your quest to play lead guitar.Firstly, let's just establish what lead guitar is. The lead guitarist usually plays the melodic guitar parts such as licks, solos and instrumental fill passages. The lead guitar parts are supported by the rhythm guitar which usually plays chords or riffs.By the way, rhythm guitar is of equal importance and difficulty as lead guitar and as a competent lead guitarist you need to understand what the rhythm guitarist is doing. By that I mean whatever the rhythm player is doing determines to a great extent what is appropriate for the lead guitarist to play. So if the rhythm guitarist is playing chords in the key of 'A' then the lead player's best bet is to play in the ...

Finding a Good Guitarist

Being a good guitarist takes a lot of effort. And finding one is a much harder task to perform. First of all we need to know what it takes to be known as a good player. There are various qualities and expertise that become imperative to excel in this field. There may be artists who did not have any formal training while learning a guitar. But that does not prove to be a disqualification for the artist who wants to be a good guitarist. Things to look for while finding a good guitarist The guitar is an incredibly versatile instrument, and like the piano, it can play chords, melodies, solos, or help to gel a group. A singer would just want to be able to play basic chords when they are singing. But a professional performer would be someone who would not only analyze the technical side of music but also play music that is much more enjoyable than playing hours of scales that are monotonous and non musical. To find a good performer who can play in public, enjoy his guitar playing and a true ...
