MOTLEY CRUE - Shout At The Devil
2007-10-24 14:09:00
To write about Motley Crue is like writing about a whole era, and what an era it was. It was 1983 when this band came out with an album that would meant to write history. Bearing all the trademarks of the scene, lots of makeup, strange, and sometimes exaggerating clothing and hairstyle, this band seemed like another LA outfit, often causing negative comments from press and parents. Only that the quartet was here to stay, and proved it, releasing one good album after another. Mid tempo songs, with excellent musicianship from everyone, with the distinguished vocals of Vince Neil, with enough melodies and groovy rhythms. Songs talking about fast cars, fast women, one night stands, alcohol drinking and partying all night, songs that meant to become a trademark of the decade, and would create tons of clones and wannabes. It was the decade of eextremeoutfits, extreme both in visual but also extreme in behavior and Motley Crue is maybe the first act that comes in mind when talking about this ...
SEVERE TORTURE - Sworn Vengeance
2007-10-24 13:24:00
The band comes from Holland, and their story starts back in the 1997. This is their latest studio release, and an album that will please all the fans of the extreme. The band is playing Death Metal, technical and melodic at times, but also extreme and as brutal as it should be. This time, there are guest vocalists as well, dueling in the songs, something that makes things even more interesting. Melodies are also a key part of this album, making the music a bit more catchy and easy to get into. Another noticeable part is the excellent rhythm section, sometimes giving the feeling of a well oiled machine, ready to destroy. The majority of the songs are well worked, with not weak or repetitive parts, and this keeps the interest of the listener high until the end. The clear production comes to complete the album in the best possible way. A pure Death Metal album, that won't leave the fans of the genre untouched. Check them out, if you haven't already done so. 9/10 ...
RITCHIE KOTZEN - Return Of The Mother Head's Family Reunion
2007-10-24 13:22:00
The skills of a guitar player like Kotzen are well known almost to everyone, but here we have a solo album, with a different musical approach than the usual. The music here is Hard Rock, with enough Blues and Southern elements as well. The result might sound a bit old-fashioned, but is catchy and melodic, with well worked arrangements and tunes that stick into your mind. Besides the excellent guitars that one should expect, a good comment exist for the vocals as well, but also for the other band members that are also performing on the same high level of musicianship. The arrangements are very good, with a Bluesy feeling in the music, something that makes them even morepowerfull and mind intriguing. All in all, besides the unquestionable skills of Ritchie Kotzen, this album is one of those that contains enough good music, sometimes more close to Hard Rock, others with more Southern or Blues elements, but always well performed. Music that has something to say to the listener. 9/10 ...
TED POLEY - Smile
2007-10-24 13:19:00
If you close your eyes for a minute, while listening to this album, you get the feeling that a single day hasn't passed since the mid 80's music wave. Something that seems natural though, since here we have the second solo album of Ted Poley, singer of the famous Danger Danger band. An 80's feeling that starts from the cover, and moves to the attitude and the music inside. Melodic and pompous, sometimes exaggerating, sometimes reminding, but always bringing a big smile to the face of the fortunate ones who lived, or those who liked the 80's Metal creations. Catchy and melodic, with nice hooks and arrangements, parts to sing along and tap you feet with the rhythm, this album sounds like an old friend who suddenly came home for a visit. Of course, music that brings memories is nothing if is not accompanied with arrangements and good musicianship, but this is not the case here. Almost all the songs are of top quality, bearing not only the trademark of the singer, but also of the other ...
VOYAGER - Univers
2007-10-19 12:28:00
New work for the Australian act, and although I am not familiar with their first one, this one is an album worth listening to the last note. Despite the first, and not so good, impression, with the Maidenish riff on the first song, the band came to prove me wrong. They surely know how to combine elements, and how to create songs that are unique and interesting. Sometimes flirting with more brutal forms, sometimes with more electronic stuff, always melodic and catchy though, they manage to keep the interest of the listener high until the end. The arrangements are easy to follow, catchy enough, but also complex in a fluent way, that won't only please the fans of Progressive but even a broader audience. Melodies are a key part of this album, both driven by the excellent keyboards the guitars, without dominating the songs, something that the fans of Melodic Metal will like. The production is as clear as is should be, and adds some good extra points to the result. An album, that I admit, I ...

JADED HEART - Sinister Mind
2007-10-08 13:32:00
The story of the band starts back in the early 90's, with the singer being the frontman of Bonfire, along with his brother in the guitar duties. This is the latest release of the band, their first for Frontiers Records so far. The first thing that the listener will notice here, is that the music is catchy, very catchy to be more exact. Tunes to sing along, parts memorable, and refrains that stick into your mind, is the key to the success. Of course all this without inspiration is nothing, and thankfully the band doesn't have any lack of it. The music is fluent, and keeps a good company, although, with a more careful listening you will discover much more things than the obvious. Either way, the songs are very good, with almost no exception, Melodic Metal, with tons of 90's elements, but with a modern touch, with background vocals and keyboards and a shiny production. The listening of this album was a big fun, and I am sure that the band would have had the same fun while recording it. ...
DEADBORN - Stigma Eternal
2007-10-08 13:08:00
This album is the debut, but quite a blast to be more honest. Existing since 2002, but never make it to the surface, this act was already well known in the underground. This is, as I already mention, their first full length album, and right from the first song, you can tell it's a success. The band is playing Death Metal, heavy as hell, intense and groovy, with touches of melody here and there. Furthermore, not resting on their success, and seeking ways to enrich their music, they have added some Hardcore elements here and there, something that has enhanced the whole result. The vocalist is very good, and the songs are having both mid tempo heavy tunes, and faster Thrashy riffs and elements. It's really hard not to like this album, since it's full of energy, good rhythm, and inspiration. Not each song is alike, and this helps the listener and keeps the interest high until the last minute. Fast, brutal, groovy, and as heavy as it should be, this is a Death Metal album that will plea ...
THE VISION BLEAK - The Wolves Go Hunt Their Pray
2007-09-27 10:01:00
This is the new album of the band, about two years after the release of their concept "Carpathia". The band has progressed into a path that was obvious from their previous release, and seemed like a natural and normal transition. This time, the metal parts are more visible, although the trademarks of their music, the orchestral parts, the theatrical and atmospheric sections, and everything that made their music familiar to their fans are also there. This leads into a more diverse, and fun to listen to, album, with parts that will please everyone. The music is groovy, with parts to bang your head along, but also with more dark and complex elements, all blended into a natural and fluent manner. No weak points exist here, since each song has is own characteristics, completing the whole album. I am sure that the band is into a very productive period, and this is something that the listener can hear on this album. A band that you should checkout, if you haven't already done so. 10/10 ...

KEEL - Keel (1987)
2007-09-19 03:34:00
The self-titled by Keel finds the band finally overcoming their identity crisis and leaning more to the pop side of metal than the schizophrenic leanings of their previous work where they just couldn't decide if they wanted to rock or not. Apparently not, but at least the production matches the desired shift and the raw edges to the guitar and vocal production have been softened up and work to the better. Unfortunately though, with this shift toward full on pop-metal, the songwriting is key, and these guys just simply don't have any. They give it a good solid effort though, but Ron Keel's vocals just simply aren't up to snuff for this sound they are shooting for. Everything else is passable as far as that goes, but the band doesn't really have any strong hooks or vocals melodies that will keep drawing you in. Hard to be a pop-metal behemoth when you can't write hooks, and they just can't. A good example of this is the song "Cherry Lane," on here which is essentially the same as ...
