Caribou - Andorra Review
2007-11-07 16:17:35
I was a bit hesitant about checking out Caribou’s Andorra. First off I’m always a bit “meh” when it comes to electronic and I really have to force myself sometimes to listen. Also, no one has ever really recommended them to me so I just never bothered to check it out personally. “Andorra” has been released on August 21st and it has probably been on my computer untouched for the last two months. I basically forced myself to review this album because I feel I need MORE Canadian content on this blog specifically local bands (from Toronto) that have become really popular. I’m a bad Canadian as most of the bands have been from the states or overseas. Anyway usually when I force myself to listen things it comes with bad results. Not with “Andorra”. This album has creeped up on me with some surprisingly addictive tunes, even without lyrics this album is quite enjoyable with it’s mix of sounds and beats. There is a good sound to it s ...
The Field: From Here We Go to Sublime Review
2007-11-06 20:25:59
The Field’s From Here We Go To Sublime currently stands as the album of the year on Metacritic with a 90 score. Beating the likes of Radiohead, Arcade Fire and Les Savy Fav, however user rating suggest that this album is more of a disappointment. Rating aside, I want to and I always try to start listening to an album without any expectations and I try to limit bias as much as possible. The genre of Electronic is probably something I listen to very rarely. I do like electronic but probably not on a large scale basis. Anyway the number one thing that the electronic genre I find important is whether it makes me want to dance or not! The only instrumental/electronic group to accomplish such a feat was Simian Mobile Disco. From Here We Go To Sublime is a decent effort with complex sounds that seamlessly enter your brain. It didn’t make we want to dance BUT I feel like I was on drugs when I listen to the songs as it gets me paranoid as to where the sounds are coming from. I thin ...
Korn: Album Review
2007-11-05 21:49:51
Korn released their newest untitled album at the end of July this summer, right after their Family Values gig at the Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto. I went to that concert and I bought the album near the end of summer. That concert was pretty awesome but the album turned out to be a disappointment. I bought the limited edition album because I just love the band that much. It came out to around $30 something and it came with a voucher for a free t-shirt that you have to go online to get. That ‘free’ t-shirt came out to $15 because of the shipping and handling. I felt pretty ripped off because I pretty much bought the CD just for the shirt. Anyways, the music on that album wasn’t no Mozart either. ‘Hold On’ and ‘Starting Over’ and ‘Love & Luxury’ were just meh. ‘Evolution’ was the number one single on the album and it reminded me of old Korn stuff from the Follow The Leader album. Its a good song to rock out to or hav ...
Les Savy Fav: Let’s Stay Friends Review
2007-11-03 17:13:09
Les Savy Fav is a band from New York City and have been together since 1995. However “Let’s Stay Friends” is the first release I have heard and is currently considered one of the best albums of 2007 with an 87 score currently on Metacritic. Les Savy Fav is regarded as a post/art punk type of band which says they give a harder and a little more screaming than most of the bands I seem to like. This probably would be the type of thing Joe or Xulander would listen to. After listening to this album, I have to say I really agree with the critics on this one thought it hasn’t been rated well by some users. I think this album is very addictive all around. It may not be inventive or “original” but I really dig the intros and the strong singing displayed in many of the songs. I found this album very easy to listen to all the way throughout and I gradually started listening to this album hour after hour. I think the bands shows a lot of what it can do in terms ...
Siberian: With Me Review
2007-11-01 19:05:00
I got an e-mail from Finn Parnell who is part of Siberian a band from Seattle, Washington. He asked me to check out his band’s album “With Me” which is available for free to stream. My first impression on “With Me” was very strong that I believed I should really get my hands on a digital copy. “With Me” is phenomenal. I general listen to new material every day and this album from Siberian which was released on October 23rd could have floored me with how good it was. Finn shouldn’t need to e-mail people about his band’s album! I was trying to figure out who they sound like and my conclusion is that they seem to be a mix of Interpol (musically) and a bit like Okkervil River (vocally). The problem for Siberian is probably due to be a small band at the moment. They are part of Sonic Boom Records which has housed bands such as Nada Surf and Death Cab For Cutie in association with a larger independent label called Barsuk Records. The albu ...
Halloween Mix!
2007-10-31 14:19:34
Today is Halloween and I’m looking for an excuse to make a list of songs simply because they are fun to do! Here’s a Halloween indie (for the most part) mash-upthat I created off my media library so sorry if I’m missing a lot of great tracks. Most of these are titled based but enjoy anyway. 1.Perfect Disguise by Modest Mouse 2.Mistaken For Strangers by The National 3.Is There A Ghost? by Band of Horses 4.The Ghost of You Lingers by Spoon 5.Werewolf by Cat Power 6.What Wolves Would Do by Les Savy Fav 7.They Are Night Zombies!! They Are Neighbors!!They Have Come Back From The Dead!! Ahhhhh! by Sufjan Stevens 8.It’s a Curse by Wolf Parade 9.Crooked Teeth by Death Cab For Cutie 10.The Old Hag Is Sleeping by The Fiery Furnaces 11.Monster Hospital by Metric 12.The Chills by Peter Bjorn and John ...
Jens Lekman: Night Falls Over Kortedala Review
2007-10-30 15:16:43
Jens Lekman is an world/indie pop artist hailing from Sweden. His album “Night Falls Over Kortedala” has received some pretty good reviews so I decided just to check it out. Jen Lekman’s music stylistically is stepping outside of the box of what I would say I like. I am a usually a fan of indie pop but Lekman gives off a different vibe on NFOK. He has a nice/great voice and lyrically this album is solid. I just think the style of the music may turn off some people and it explain the bad reviews from Now Magazine and CokeMachineGlow. Given the time I think you can really learn to like NFOK. I really dig a lot of the songs on the album, my favorite being Shirin a song about a good barber who cuts his hair in her apartment. Otherwise the whole album is pretty solid throughout with each song being likable. I have to say this album isn’t perfect though. As good as the album seems to be, I am not sure one I can repeatedly listen to over and over nor will think of to ...
Sherwood: A Different Light Review
2007-10-28 22:00:21
This my first post, and I’ll start off with one of my favourite bands in the past 2 months. Sherwood is an indie band by definition (currently signed to Myspace records), but they are more fittingly an alternative pop rock band. Hailing from California, their catchy upbeat music, fits the feel-good, care-free lifestyle attached to the state of California I first heard of Sherwood after purchasing tickets to the Sleeping With Giants Tour, headlined by The Academy is… After never before hearing of Sherwood, it was a safe bet that I should probably listen to some of their stuff before going to see them live. Their first song off the album, A Different Light, instantly hooked me. “Song in my head” starts the album off with a mellow beat, which retains the upbeat nature of Sherwood’s music. The best way I can describe this song is “it’s the perfect background tune, for any happy memory you want to reminiscence about.” Other notable songs are Middle of the Night, which is a ...
Division Day - To Buy Beartrap Island Or Not?
2007-10-27 16:29:50
I think I need some recommendations by somebody (would be nice to have more comments anyway). The weekend is never good for me to do an album review anyway. Division Day is a band from Los Angeles, California that has received some hype for their awesome covers. I must admit I am a big fan of their covers as they are probably equal to the original work. They have two songs on stream for their album (released on October 3) that I’m thinking about getting. However, I don’t seem to be a fan of “Tigers” but more of a fan of “Colorguard”. Is there anyone that would recommend the album (all the hype seems to be about the covers)? Or is there anyone that would just say to just sit back and enjoy their covers? If you haven’t heard of Division Day listen to these tracks: More Than This by Division Day (Roxy Music Cover) Enjoy The Silence by Division Day (Depeche Mode Cover) ...
