Behemoth (Inferno Festival 2002)
2007-10-27 08:27:00
Behemoth is an influential Polish blackened death metal band. They are considered to have played one of the most important roles in establishing the Polish extreme metal underground, alongside Graveland and Sacrilegium. Until early 2000s, the band played rather classical black metal with a heathen lyrical content, but soon changed to that of occult and thelemic themes written by their lead vocalist, Nergal. This coincided with an increase in musical craftsmanship that allowed them to expand out of the black metal underground and garnered them with some international recognition. With the 2004 release of Demigod, they had fully embraced brutal technical death metal, while retaining their own signature style characterized by the staggering drumwork of Inferno, multi-layered vocals and Nile-style middle-eastern influence. Their transition from black to death metal has made them "traitors" in the eyes of some fans, but they have become darlings of the modern death metal scene, often mentio ...

Death - Live at X-mas Metal Fest (Germany, 1991)
2007-10-16 13:26:00
Human touring line-up: Chuck, Paul Masvidal, Sean Reinert, Skott Carino.Over the course of more than a decade and seven increasingly accomplished albums, Chuck Schuldiner, the architect behind the ubiquitousDeath, became a bona fide heavy metal icon. Now widely recognized as the father of death metal (if a single candidate must be chosen, his resumé is about as good as it gets), Schuldiner's singular drive and ruthless creative vision guaranteed that Death retain a pole position at the forefront of the style's development. Indeed, while the savagely raw aggression contained in Death's first three albums proved crucial to spearheading the first generation of death, and subsequently grindcore bands, the astounding musicianship and increasingly sophisticated songwriting found on their later-day efforts may have influenced even more groups exploring the limits of extreme metal's progressive outposts. By all accounts a force to be reckoned with on-stage, Death also logged more frequent ...

Absu - Live In Bad Worrtschofen (01-05-1995)
2007-10-15 13:13:00
Absu is a black metal/thrash metal band from Plano, Texas, USA. Their early work leaned towards a death metal sound, but more recently they have incorporated a black and thrash metal sound with some celtic and folk music (which they call "Mythological Occult Metal"). Their lyrical themes are esoteric, ranging from Celtic myths and legends, Sumerian myths and legends, magic, weaponry, and sorcery.BiographyAbsu was formed in 1991 by Equitant Ifernain (Guitars, Bass, Lyrics) and Shaftiel (Guitars, Vocals). Shortly after that, they were joined by Proscriptor McGovern (Drums, Vocals, Lyrics), David Athron Mystica (Guitars), and Black Massith (Keyboards, Synth, Sequencing). The self-proclaimed "Mythological Occult Metal" has maintained a steady following in the extreme metal underground for a number of years now. After releasing their first album 'Barathrum: V.I.T.R.I.O.L.' in 1993, Absu narrowed their line up to a three piece when David Athron Mystica and Black Massith left. For live per ...

Amon Amarth - Live Ancienne Belgique (Brussels) 26/9/2007
2007-10-02 13:48:00
Since their humble start in 1992 as an underground band from Tumba, a suburb in southern Stockholm, AMON AMARTH have managed to establish themselves as one of Europe’s top death metal acts through hard work, relentless touring, and consistently solid albums. What has set AMON AMARTH apart from the rest of the death metal scene since the very beginning, is their use of Viking mythology and imagery in lyrics and artwork, as well as a talent for writing epic, memorable melodies, which underline their solemn yet barbaric approach to heavy music.AsatorThe band went through the usual demo recordings and line-up changes in the beginning stages, but soon made its first mark with the MCD “Sorrow Throughout The Nine Worlds”. A one-off affair with (of all places) Singapore’s Pulverized Records, this MCD did not only plant AMON AMARTH’s flag in the underground metal landscape, but also gained the band a multi-album deal with the renowned Metal Blade Records.Fate of Norns“Once Sent From ...

Mayhem - NYC, NY 6/10/01
2007-09-25 13:15:00
Mayhem (often called 'The True Mayhem') is a black metal band, formed in 1984[1] in Oslo, Norway. The band name is taken from the Venom song, Mayhem with Mercy.[2] Much controversy has followed the various murders, suicides and other forms of violence that surrounded the band in the early years. Mayhem is considered one of the most controversial bands in modern musical history, especially due to the vast number of urban legends and myths surrounding their early years, and the controversies have often overshadowed the music, especially in recent years due in part to the Internet and magazine articles.Over time Mayhem has evolved through a variety of black metal styles, delving at times into areas of dark avant-garde industrial and electronica. Highly influential, the group is widely considered to be one of the cornerstones of the black metal movementPart 1Part 2Part 3Part 4Part 5Part 6

Vader - trailer of the "And Blood was Shed in Warsaw" DVD
2007-09-22 01:15:00
Vader is a Polish death metal band founded in 1986. It stands as one of the best-known European death metal bands. Vader plays a style of death metal different from that of their American counterparts, but their approach is nonetheless firmly based upon the template created by Slayer. For example, many bands of this genre tend to play guitar solos and lead parts which do not adhere strictly to traditional musical principles (such as being in key) and make extensive use of tremolo bar, creating a rather dissonant sound. Vader, on the other hand, whilst often playing in this style, occasionally diverge and play diminished, augmented, and minor scale solos. Vader is also different in that vocalist Piotr Wiwczarek's vocals do not follow the standard sound widely considered acceptable for death metal. While his vocal delivery remains extreme, it is a much throatier approach, giving him the ability to enunciate words more clearly than most death metal vocalists.

Dimmu Borgir - Death Cult Armageddon Tour (Live In Amsterdam)
2007-09-17 13:33:00
Dimmu Borgir was originally founded as a melodic black metal band in 1993 by Shagrath, Silenoz, and Tjodalv. The band released an EP in 1994 entitled Inn I Evighetens Mørke (in English:"Into The Darkness of Eternity"). This short EP sold out within weeks, and the band followed up with the 1994 full length album For All Tid. This album featured musical contributions by members of Dødheimsgard and Ved Buens Ende. Interestingly enough, Shagrath played drums with Tjodalv on guitar and Erkekjetter (translating "arch heretic") Silenoz covering vocals. This lineup changed before the release of Stormblåst (translates to "Storm Blown") on Cacophonous Records in 1996. Stormblåst received high praise from many melodic black metal fans, and is often regarded as a highlight of the band's career. It is also the last album which features all lyrics written and sung in Norwegian. After Stormblåst, Dimmu Borgir's career took a sharp turn. Keyboardist Stian Aarstad left the band due to his obligat ...

Slayer - Still Reigning Live
2007-09-12 15:06:00
Line-upTom Araya - Bass/VocalsKerry King - GuitarJeff Hanneman - GuitarDave Lombardo - DrumsStill Reigning was directed by Dean Karr and filmed on July 11 at the Civic Center in Augusta, Maine. There are multiple camera angles that switch rapidly and sometimes utilize black and white. The camera work is artistic and professional, but can be a bit too much at times. I found myself being far too aware of cinematography at the expense of the energy from the live experience. I would not have complained if the crew would have pointed one camera at the stage and another at drummer Dave Lombardo, and just left them still. The experience of the show is what is key here, and that suffers just a bit from photographic wankery. Camera angles aside, Still Reigning looks good and the sound is excellent. Playlist1. Deicide - Hallendale, FL 10/31/98 Halloween
2007-09-05 14:42:00
Deicide was formed in Tampa, Florida in 1987, first playing under the name Carnage. After Glen Benton joined the name was changed to Amon. During this time they released two demos: Feasting the Beast (1987) and Sacrificial (1989). In 1989 the band's name was changed to Deicide by force of Roadrunner Records, as Amon was the name of the house in the King Diamond album "Them". Deicide then released their self-titled debut album in 1990.The band's original lineup consisted of Glen Benton on bass and vocals, brothers Eric and Brian Hoffman on guitars, and Steve Asheim on drums. Both Eric and Brian tended to play complex solos at fast speeds and with overlapping riffs, which gave Deicide the definitive heavy sound and complex song structures. This lineup remained intact until November 25, 2004 in the wake of increasing animosity between Glen Benton and the Hoffman brothers - allegedly in regards to royalties and publishing. The guitar roles were then filled by ex-Cannibal Corpse guitarist ...
