Canon Rock: YouTube Web Guitar Wizard Revealed at Last
2007-12-02 18:09:02
8 months ago a mysterious image showed up on YouTube. A sinewy figure, his eyes obscured by a beige baseball cap, was playing electric guitar. The video was called simply “Guitar”. The video drew hordes of seekers with diverse interests and attitudes. The most basic comment is a question: Who is this guy? His name is Jeong-Hyun Lim…
This guy is pretty decent, but I’ve seen cats on the street in Boston smoke him on classical guitars. He is no god.
And I second illicium, could you pick a more overdone and clich?d piece to cover?

Songs About Killings Live On, Not Just In Raps
2007-11-26 13:15:10
Behold the classic murder ballad. It’s a song form about the most gruesome of events, told in a light, sometimes even pretty way, so that it might take a several listens to recognize the bloody gore oozing underneath an otherwise benign melody. The murder ballad has been around for centuries and continues forward as a part of popular culture.
Most of the songs on this list deal with murder as a serious and lamentable act. The songs are full of sadness and regret. Those that aren’t involve crimes of self defense and self preservation (predominantly for women.) Comparing them to Gangster raps is a bit of a stretch. “Earl” is not dead because he called Biggie a punk ass bitch. “Earl” is dead because his abuse drove his wife to a desperate act.
Yes, Cash “Shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die.” But he is destitute, in jail and weeping at his loss of freedom when he recalls it.
These songs don’t glorify murder. And many of the ...

Foo Fighters frontman to go drinking with trapped miners
2007-11-25 12:10:22
Dave Grohl says he’ll make good on his promise to go for beer with two Australian miners who listened to the Foo Fighters while trapped underground. They had to wait 15 days until they were rescued and to pass the time, they requested an iPod with Foo Fighters songs on it to help drown out the sound of drilling as rescuers attempted a slow rescue.
> they requested an iPod with Foo Fighters songs on it to help drown out
> the sound of drilling as rescuers attempted a slow rescue.
Yeah, right, drown out the noise with even more sound (this is not about the music, mind you, never heard Foo Fighters stuff, I only know about the collaboration with Norah Jones).
I hope they at least got some sound-insulating earplugs, as the Sony Nude EX, or the Shure ones. Surely they didn’t get some fancy Etymotics.

EMI says DRM-free music is selling well
2007-11-24 11:07:30
EMI’s senior VP Lauren Berkowitz reports that sales of the label’s digital music sales have seen a spike in sales after going DRM-free through iTunes a few weeks ago. If EMI can maintain that increase in sales, the other major labels may follow sooner than later.
Well of course they are going to say it is selling well. What are they going to say? Sorry music lovers, and iTunes customers DRM-free music is selling poorly. Come Monday morning we are putting DRM back in all our music.

RIAA: we love fair use. No, really!
2007-11-22 09:17:51
The RIAA is a true champion of fair use. That’s what RIAA president Cary Sherman wants you to believe. In an op-ed piece published by Cnet, Sherman champions the RIAA’s unique understanding of fair use while taking digs at those who do not share the record industry’s vision??like the Consumer Electronics Association.
I’ve bought the same albums in Vinyl, Cassette, and CD. I shouldn’t have to do that every few years just because the technology of the moment changes.
Society has trained people from the get-go to ignore copyrights. How many music teachers in high schools photocopy sheet music for their students instead of handing them the originals? Technically illegal? Probably. How many libraries across the country have coin-op photocopiers galore around their buildings? MOST with some warning quoting one or more copyright laws above them.
If the RIAA pushes hard enough why have music in libraries around the country? Lets make THAT illegal. Of cou ...

Trent Reznor: “No wonder people steal music.”
2007-11-21 08:13:04
The NIN frontman blogs: “As the climate grows more and more desperate for record labels, their answer to their mostly self-inflicted wounds seems to be to screw the consumer over even more. A couple of examples that quickly come to mind…” He then details how his own label insists on screwing fans, and how he hopes to counteract that soon.
While I admit upfront I am a Republican, I have been a loyal NIN listener since my sister introduced them to me in 1990. I do not agree (and never have) with Trent’s political beliefs, but I think the music he makes is extremely sexy and far ahead of the average musician. “The Good Soldier” has an amazing bass line, “Capital G” just blows my mind musically not lyrically, same with “My Violent Heart” which is simply amazing.
I applaud NIN’s success and wish them the best. I also have purchased every Halo, and will continue to do so (official releases only). I do this because I enjoy t ...

Ted Nugent Rips Paul McCartney for Firing Hamburger-Eating Roadies…
2007-11-18 05:00:37
The Nuge’s reaction to Paul McCartney’s firing of several roadies for sneaking hamburgers while on tour. McCartney is a known animal rights activist and defender of PETA. According to Ted, it looks like he just can’t “live and let live.”
Ted Nugent is an admitted draft dodger and womanizer. Paul McCartney is the greatest songwriter in rock history. Advantage Paul..
The roadies cashed their checks and signed the contract to work on Paul’s tour.. Right? Case closed. YOUR FIRED! You didn’t follow your contract. If you couldn’t go a few weeks without a burger, THEN YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE SIGNED YOUR CONTRACT.
Why do conservatives how so much trouble with CLEAR - established rules? Start your OWN tour and hire who you want. If you don’t like Paul for caring about animals, then DON’T BUY his records or concert tickets. Quit whining about others who follow through on their convictions. I wish more REAL conservatives would fo ...

Prince gives away his new CD, Music industry goes nuts
2007-11-17 03:57:47
The following quote sums it up nicely: “The Artist Formerly Known as Prince should know that with behaviour like this he will soon be the Artist Formerly Available in Record Stores. And I say that to all the other artists who may be tempted to dally with the Mail on Sunday.” They really do sound like a bunch of petulant little kids, don’t they?
This goes back to his AFKAP / ‘Slave’ days. I would suggest that he’s bided his time and decided to deliver a ‘f*ck you’ to the music industry in general. Are you watching this George ‘Dope’ Michael?

EMI says DRM-free music is selling well
2007-11-16 02:52:57
EMI’s senior VP Lauren Berkowitz reports that sales of the label’s digital music sales have seen a spike in sales after going DRM-free through iTunes a few weeks ago. If EMI can maintain that increase in sales, the other major labels may follow sooner than later.
Yea, a whole single song I bought on iTunes was available without DRM. And not even the rest of the songs on the *same album*. Not other albums that as far as I could dig up were under EMI labels.

Man Caught Stealing Bike Wheels, Set to Music
2007-11-15 01:45:10
Daniel is a musician, and he set the video to a song as a form of therapy. Sure, this guy got some wheels, but he also got thousands of people watching him and thinking what an a**hole he is.
If I was desperate and had along way to go….I would think about jacking a bike to get to where I need to be….then I would return it later when I reached my destination!

Photo gallery of mud madness at Glastonbury concert
2007-11-14 01:39:21
This is a nightmare. I am wading through miles of mud, carrying a rucksack, sleeping bag, camp bed, pillow, and a trail of loo roll, bin bags and waterproofs. It goes without saying that it’s raining, torrentially. Water’s going down my face, into my eyes, up my sleeves, down the inside of my jeans and in my new wellies as the camp bed bang…
Pretty weak lineup this year, sadly. Remember when they had truly great bands like Radiohead and Pulp headlining? Arctic Monkeys and The Killers? What a joke.
