Boycott Regal Cinemas
2007-08-23 19:22:44
Free Culture.org is joining the call for a chain-wide boycott of Regal Cinemas over their draconian punishment of a 19 year-old girl caught taping 20 seconds of the Transformers film. We demand that Regal Cinemas drop all charges against Jhannet Sejas, and that the entertainment group issue a full apology to the teen.
“I was terrified,” said Sejas, her voice breaking. “I was crying. I’ve never been in trouble before.” She said the assistant manager of the theater saw her holding up the Canon Power Shot and reported it to the general manager, who called police.
While the question of whether or not Jhannet’s Transformers clip counts as fair use (it is our opinion that it does, as it is private, non-commercial use of an unsubstantial portion of the original), there is another question we should be asking, and that is whether or not we should be patronizing a corporation that insists on pressing charges against someone who is clearly not the intended ta ...

House Backs Open Access to Taxpayer-Funded Research
2007-08-22 20:38:12
July 20th, 2007, the US House of Representatives approved a measure directing the National Institute of Health (NIH) to require free, online access to agency-funded research within 12 months of publishing in a peer-reviewed journal. Open Access advocates praised the provision, passed with broad, bipartisan support as part of the FY2008 Labor, HHS, and Education Appropriations Bill. “This action paves the way for all scientists and citizens to access, use, and benefit from the results of publicly funded biomedical research,” said Heather Joseph, Executive Director of the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, and a leader of the Alliance for Taxpayer Access. 26 Nobel Laureates called for mandatory public access to NIH research in a recent letter to congress, citing the Human Genome Project and benefits of public access to research. Less than 5% of eligible, individual research has become publicly accessible under the current, voluntary NIH Public Access Polic ...

My Favorite Graphs… and the future
2007-08-22 16:31:36
This blog has always been about optimism, creating better user experiences, helping users spend more time in flow, and learning. There are 405 posts here. More importantly, there are nearly 10,000 comments from y’all that add so much more to the topics, and from which myself and others have learned a great deal. I don’t want the last thing people remember about this blog to be The Bad Things.
But I want the thing people see when they come here now to reflect what this blog has always been about, so I’m including a few of my favorite pictures from the last two years here.
As for the future of this blog, I know I cannot just return to business as usual — whatever absurd reasons have led to this much hatred for me (and for what I write here) will continue, so there is no reason to think the same things wouldn’t happen again… and probably soon. That includes anything that raises (or maintains) my visibility, so I will not be doing speaking engagements ...

Is Twitter TOO good?
2007-08-20 00:24:53
Twitter scares me. For all its popularity, I see at least three issues: 1) it’s a near-perfect example of the psychological principle of intermittent variable reward, the key addictive element of slot machines. 2) The strong “feeling of connectedness” Twitterers get can trick the brain into thinking its having a meaningful social interaction, while another (ancient) part of the brain “knows” something crucial to human survival is missing. 3) Twitter is yet another–potentially more dramatic–contribution to the problems of always-on multi-tasking… you can’t be Twittering (or emailing or chatting, of course) and simultaneously be in deep thought and/or a flow state.
[Disclaimer: I’m SO in the minority on this one… it looks like about a hundred-to-one in favor of Twitter, so I’m most likely way wrong on this one (but it doesn’t stop me from trying). And this post is mostly a mashup of a variety of earlier post ...

Teaching about cognitive error Part 1
2007-08-19 13:15:44
Thanks to Dr. Keith White’s presentation on medical error at the Rural and Remote Conference, I realized that many clinicians were unaware of how to diagnose cognitive errors in their students clinical reasoning. A 2005 study published in Archives of Internal Medicine found that cognitive error is the single most common cause of diagnostic errors. This post hopes to begin to help clinical teachers help students correct errors by examining four common types of cognitive error.
1. Confirmation Biases
A 37-year-old woman is severely anemic. She has previously been diagnosed with celiac disease, which causes malabsorption, and she is told to increase her iron intake. Several months later when she doesn’t improve, she is discovered to have a small tear in her esophagus. She had mentioned the pain when swallowing previously, but this symptom had been under investigated.
Confirmation biases cause you to look for proof of your diagnosis while ignoring factors that might disagree with it. T ...

Cleaning Up The Mess On My Desk Then Off To The Races
2007-08-17 04:44:21
Don’t forget to enter the “Kodak Ticket Give Away” for your chance to win a pair of tickets to the NASCAR Sharp AQUOS 500 race on September 2, 2007 at California Speedway. There is just over 48hrs left to enter and I still don’t have all of the tickets given away yet (but we’re close - that 112 number is the one we’re looking for). Click here for all of the rules and info. Good Luck!I’ll be leaving for Brooklyn, Michigan on Friday to go to the races and I don’t know if I’ll be able to blog while I’m away. Every attempt to do so will be made, and I’ll keep you updated with all the info that I can, if I can.In the mean time, I just wanted to comment on a few things that have been hanging around on my desk that I want to take care of, so bear with me.1) Lena Richards over at NASCAR FanZone is closing shop. She is getting out of the blogging business for now and we’ll miss her around here. If you get a chance to say go ...
