OpenSocial - initial thoughts
2007-11-02 09:25:11
Mike Nolan over on the Edge Hill Web Services blog is one of many who have written recently about the OpenSocial API.  See Marc Andreessen’s Open Social: a new universe of social applications all over the web for a good overview. There is no doubt that this is a really interesting development and one that those of us that are interested in developing, using or deploying Facebook-style social applications will need to take note of over the coming months. I Won The John Chow RSS contest
2007-11-02 06:18:05
Well yes this is the second time I am winning something this year. Sometime back I had won the third prize in a WordPress plugin competition, but this time I am the grand winner at the John Chow RSS contest. The actual contest was between John Chow and Shoemoney to see who can get the maximum amount of feed readers in the month of October. To spice up the contest John held his own contest to get readers to give him the best idea to gain more RSS readers, well my idea came out tops and I won the grand prize. The idea that I gave John Chow was to add in email subscription to get more feed readers and that helped a lot :-). Well here is what I won A 2GB iPod Nano. A $750 redesign for the blog by Adriaan Pienaar of Adii. $400 review by John Chow dot Com. Ad in the John Chow dot Com RSS feed. Access Your Firefox Tabs As A Menu
2007-11-01 11:49:36
Many a times you may have more than 10 or more tabs open in Firefox. At such times you may not be able to easily navigate between tabs. Tabs Menu is a Firefox plugin which adds a new menu to display all the open tabs as a list. The tabs menu will show you full titles for each of the tabs thus allowing you to easily distinguish the tabs. I started using this recently and think that it will be part of my must use Firefox extensions. Do you think this extension will be helpful to you. Do let me know through your comments. the modded Jesus phone: click to go to the project this year’s traffic: …according to Google Analytics the blue line flat on the bottom represents around 3500 unique visitors a day. click to enlarge the vertical line represents visitors *a day*, so yes, last wednesday I’ve seen upwards of 60,000 unique visitors… according to AWstats it’s 70,650 to be exact, on the 31st of October… 1 DIY obsolete iBook logic board repair 2 iNoPhone 3 how to turn your iPod mini into a flash based iPod 4 put flash memory into (almost) ANY iPod! 5 Slurpr – the mother of all wardrive boxes 6 iNoPhone. Automattic Matt Does A U-Turn With Themes
2007-11-01 07:54:33
Matt from Automattic the creator of WordPress blogging platform made an announcement at the WordCamp Argentina that WordPress will soon have a Themes marketplace to sell premium WordPress themes, how sweet. All of this is after Matt Mullenweg used the defense, during the whole Sponsored themes fiasco, that it would be unfair for theme creators to make money from their work when plugin authors don’t get to. You can read more about the thoughts from David Peralty. He has a wonderful post deciphering everything about this announcement. That post made me write this one as I was equally annoyed as he was but their commenting system broke so I thought to express my thoughts here. Well this can’t be blamed on anyone, money is a driving factor towards success and I envy and idolize Matt in providing such a wonderful platform that millions of users use to write their thoughts. But this above turn should have some economics behind them and will benefit the Theme developers, we plugi ...
Is It Thursday Already?
2007-11-01 02:34:17
Man this week has just flown by. I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Halloween yesterday, my kids had a blast - to quote my son, “This Halloween was the best ever!”I would agree, it was.I’ve also been really busy at work. As some of you know, I do a lot of coaching with the students that I work with and we are at the peak of volleyball season right now . I usually coach the Senior Girl’s Team, but since our Senior Boy’s Team coach has become ill, I’ve been coaching both the Boys and Girls teams - both teams are currently sitting at 3 and 1. Not bad, but they should both be at 4 - 0. The Girls lost a heart breaker Tuesday with a hugely unpopular call by the linesman (even the Home Team’s fans couldn’t believe the call), and the Boys just lost to a team tonight that was slightly less skilled than us, but still beat us none-the-less because we mentally took ourselves out of the game by making a few stupid mistakes early and not really l ...
Reader Query: How To Use Tabs To Compact Content?
2007-10-31 07:27:22
Here is another reader query that I would like to answer to all my readers. Ken Savage asked this question about what script I use to get the tabs in the sidebar? The actual reason I started using tabs was because since I changed to using a two column theme I wanted to get a lot of information in the sidebar but it could not be done in a normal way as that would lead to a very long page which would leave the main content area empty beyond a point. My idea was to get a more compact look to the site which fitted in as much information as possible in as little space I could use, that is the reason I started using tabs. What Is The Script Being Used For Creating Tabs? As the first step edit your template header and include the path to the tabber JavaScript file inside the <head> tags. You will need to add the code as shown below, please change the path of the files to the appropriate directories the files are kept in. <head> ..... Other header codes .... <!– ADD TH ...
Earnhardt Tests With His Hendrick Team
2007-10-30 21:15:17
Well I guess Dale finally knows what it is like to drive in a more competitive car. Not that his DEI cars weren’t ever competitive, they just haven’t been lately. You know, I just realized that there is a slight Canadian connection to this Earnhardt and Hendrick merger. Together the first letters of their last names form EH, a popular Canadian saying. Whoa, I could take this further and include Tony Eury in this as well, then we would have Eeh, which is a more drawn out version of the old Canadian stand-by.Anyway, I heard the test went well and everybody is happy, and patting themselves on their backs, but let me tell you they better not start celebrating too much as they are going to have a lot of pressure to perform right out of the box this year and for some fans anything less than a Championship will be a failure for next season. I hope they all hold up under the pressure they are going to be under.Dale was quoted as saying that he didn’t like the move from DEI bec ...
Copyright as Price Control
2007-10-30 20:26:41
Two recent developments show that the internet’s effects on the music industry is being mirrored in the textbook business. At the beginning of this school year, the Harvard Coop bookstore was reportedly kicking out students who were writing down book prices for online comparison shopping. The management claimed copyright over the prices, but public outcry, led by Harvard’s own, seems to have mitigated the issue. After all, one can’t copyright facts. More recently, the Follett Higher Education Group has sued Ugenie. Follett, purveyor of textbooks to many college students (including me), claims that Ugenie has violated both the Terms of Service and the DMCA by “scrapping” prices from the efollett.com site and providing comparison price shopping services. Wired’s Threat Level blog details the charges here. And a useful analysis of the intellectual property claim is here. While the merits of the case are up for debate, I think it is clear that the consum ...
Images DC Application Profile Working Group
2007-10-30 14:36:28
Despite the best efforts of First Great Western to the contrary, I got there in time to give a short presentation on the concept of the DC application profile from the perspective of the DCMI Abstract Model, summarising the current work on the Description Set Profile model and introducing the "Singapore Framework". | View | Upload your own My presentation was really just background for a presentation by Julie Allinson from the University of York, who described the experience of developing the ePrints/Scholarly Works DC Application Profile. The study endeavours to be comprehensive in terms of the variety of materials that are covered. The data included in the study pertain to textual, music, cartographic, audio-visual, graphic and three-dimensional materials As I say, an interesting and enjoyable day - though I suspect for Polly and Mick it may have been one of those occasions where they left the meeting with the feeling that the task facing them was even broader and more c ...
Yahoo Messenger Tips and Tricks
2007-10-30 12:52:45
Here are some of the tips and tricks you can use with Yahoo Messenger. Most of the tricks are all part of the preferences menu but have not been used as frequently by users. I will expose most of these that you should know. Yahoo Messenger 9 Beta Only Tricks Many a times you may close the yahoo messenger which minimizes it to the system tray or, the yahoo messenger window may lose focus while you have some other application over it or have minimized it to the taskbar. You may either have to double click on the messenger icon in the system tray or manually open it from the taskbar in such cases. Yahoo Messenger 9 saves you the trouble of using your mouse to bring the window into focus, simply pressing the Windows + Y will bring the yahoo messenger window on top of other windows thus allowing you instantly send a message to your contacts without even touching your mouse. Though its hardly been 12 hours since I began using this feature I am already addicted to it. To enable this feature g ...

Yahoo Messenger 9 Gets New Features, One From Gtalk Too
2007-10-30 11:04:50
Yahoo today released Yahoo Messenger 9 Beta with lots of exciting features for photo and video sharing. Yahoo Messenger is one of the most popular IM clients and is used by millions of people to converse with friends, family and colleagues. Here are some of the Notable features that Yahoo Messenger 9 sports; View Videos / Maps Inside Messenger Window This is one more cool feature which I liked a lot which allows users to view videos right inside the messenger window itself. This is a neat feature as now you will not have to leave your the messenger window to watch videos sent to you by your friends and can enjoy it all in the comfort of your messenger itself. Another thing I liked about this feature is that, it automatically detects the link and displays the video player without you having to do anything additional. It currently supports most of the popular video sites such as YouTube, Yahoo Video etc. Better Contact Management The new messenger sports a better contacts managem ...

Get Cool Halloween Stuff For Your PC
2007-10-29 21:13:00
Tomorrow is Halloween here in the US and it is celebrated on a huge scale on the 31st of October. People celebrate Halloween with costume parties, where they dress up in all sorts of costumes depicting ghosts, vampires, witches or some sort of famous personalities. Halloween also kicks off the season for celebrations with big festivals like Thanks Giving Day, Christmas and New Year. Here is a definition of Halloween from Wikipedia Halloween, or Hallowe’en, is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31. Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, Halloween festivals, bonfires, costume parties, visiting "haunted houses" and viewing horror films. Halloween originated from the Pagan festival Samhain, celebrated among the Celts of Ireland and Great Britain. Irish and Scottish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. Other western countries embraced the holiday in the late twentieth century.
