PHP Sessions Issue
2007-08-16 10:59:04
I get caught with this everytime I clean out my temp folders. I go to start up a PHP application (running on Windows IIS) and the session information is not retained. I go back and check my code that session_start() hasn't accidentally been commented out. The the light-bulb blinks on and I kick myself.... again. ...
Domain Name Highwaymen
2007-08-13 10:17:18
Ever stumbled across an absolute gold-nugget domain name that has yet to be registered? It’s in that moment of elation that you may become victim of domain name theft. I was stunned to witness first-hand how some sneaky bugger skimmed my colleagues search results from GoDaddy and quickly register it before him. This was a rude introduction to the seedy world of domain name parking.     ...

A good friend of mine runs a fantastic personal development company. There's a magnificent story on his homepage that closely relates to the value of professional services. This is especially true in the world of IT. ...

Explaining Peak Oil to a beer drinker
2007-06-15 14:14:29
Colin Campbell heads up the Oil Depletion Analysis Centre [ODAC] in London. He predicts that global production of oil is set to peak in the next four years. According to "peak oil" theory our consumption of oil will catch, then outstrip our discovery of new reserves and we will begin to deplete known reserves. Dr Campbell says, "It's quite a simple theory and one that any beer drinker understands. The glass starts full and ends empty and the faster you drink it the quicker it's gone." ...
Newcastle Storms - June 2007
2007-06-14 11:24:46
It was a bizarre weekend and one my family will never forget. 9th June 2007, Queens Birthday long weekend, Newcastle NSW Australia. It was the weekend that my town had 460mm rainfall in 24 hours, 10 people lost their lives and I became a black belt in karate. It was also a weekend that I realised how some people are unable to see the dangers that face them until it is too late. ...
100% Height HTML Tables
2007-06-13 11:07:16
As LCD screens get cheaper and bigger, some older websites that were originally designed to be 800x600 are getting stretched across the great pixel expanse or winding up as a postage-stamp size image in the top left hand side of the users screen. ...
Free Energy ?
2007-05-17 14:23:48
I came across an interesting claim that a company in Ireland called Steorn was in the process of validating a mechanism called Orbo that exploits a curious behaviour in magnetic fields and has the potential to generate free energy. ...
Y2K Retrospective
2007-05-17 12:24:22
There are many people who feel cheated that nothing happened at the turn of the century with the Year 2000 Bug. The media portrayed the world as we know it plunging into catastrophe as technology we’ve come to rely on dropped like flies. So what really happened and can it happen again? ...

Peak Oil Rant
2007-04-27 23:36:50
There were 2 shows on SBS the other night called "Crude Impact" and "2013: No More Oil". It was a part of the Future Focus showcase currently running on that station. To me, Peak Oil is probably the most concerning issue I see in our near future. Forget what rising sea levels are going to do to the value of your beachside property, or whether you’re going to be able to cruise around city streets in your hulking 4WD.... be concerned more about how the hell you're going to be able to eat when all the transport trucks across the country become too expensive to operate. Nearly everything we use in modern society relies on oil, either for its operation, manufacture or distribution. The price at the bowser is the least of our worries. ...
