A slightly unusual spa treament. Climb into the 43-degree-hot waters and let thousands of Garra Rufa tropical fish nibble on your dead skin cells. They supposedly don’t touch healthy skin, and the process is painless apart from a slight tingle, but I’d still where the tightest damn swimming costume I’d find so the little critters don’t decide to camp out in my urethra.

No, that’s not a frame from a movie, it’s a screenshot from the new Nvidia ‘Human Head‘ demonstration of the 8800 Ultra graphics card’s power. More high-res captures here. Graphics that used to take months of rendering time on super computers are now possible in real-time with an R8000 graphics card. With computers reaching the levels of power required for the kind of virtual reality imagined in Neuromancer and Snowcrash, we’ll soon be satisfying our innate need to control our environment. I can’t wait.

Wall of plants as building air filter

The three-storey wall of plants in the IL Centre of Queen’s University is not just an aesthetically-pleasing feat of clever gardening, it also filters out carbon dioxide and volatile organic compounds as fans suck air through the wall into the offices behind. Natureaire designs these self-repairing, self-rejuvenating air cleansers to last at least 20 years, and because the contaminants are broken down there are now hazardous filters to clean out. A great idea and it looks fantastic; hopefully we’ll see more of these in office buildings soon!

Bio-fuel backfires

Think you’re saving the planet by using bio-fuel? You are, with one small catch, you’re killing off the orangutans. With the increase in demand for palm oil, forests in Borneo are being cleared for new plantations, often by using the dirty tactic of burning the forests and buying up the degraded land at a discount. As jungles are rapidly replaced by palm oil plantations, the great apes starve and are hunted, mutilated, burnt and snared by workers protecting their crops.
It seems that every time a developed country feels guilty about raping the land and designs some new “green” initiative, it gets abused by a developing country trying to make a quick buck out of it. We’ll need investment and legislation to force the use of skyscraper farms to stop these abuses, but first we need a cost-effective way of building them. Bring on the nano-tech!

You have no chance to survive make your time.
Thanks to a misconfigured web server, some of the Facebook source code was leaked. Whooopsy. So it’s only a matter of time before some hacker publishes those nasty emails you wrote about your husband or the private bachelor party pictures you thought your wife would never see. Just another reminder to be careful what you put on computers. If it isn’t encrypted it’ll eventually get leaked. Be especially careful in disposing of old hard drives; better to destroy them than to let some cracker recover your “deleted” information and spread it around the net.
Doesn’t look like much was leaked, but don’t ever think your data is secure on facebook, or any other site.

“Remember Those Who Serve”
In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10 year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him. “How much is an ice cream sundae?” he asked. “50¢,” replied the waitress.
The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it.
“Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?” he inquired. By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient. “35¢!” she brusquely replied.
The little boy again counted his coins. “I’ll have the plain ice cream,” he said. The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left.
When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies. You see, he couldn’ ...
