Day 472: Real Japanese Heroes: Random otaku guy
2007-05-02 23:48:00
I don't know where his wife and kids were, but this was at BBs in Minami Kusatsu at about 10.30pm on a Wednesday. I know you think you can dance, but you can't. This guy can. He's all like "get outta my way!" He didn't even have to look at the screen to do this, and bear in mind that machine is monitoring the movement of his hands too, he put in a series of perfect performances all night. We are not worthy. Day 470: Skinfull
2007-05-01 23:46:00
Your students in Japan will always be an enigma to you. Most students sit quietly in the cubicle trying not to make eye contact with you or any of the other students for fear they'll have to say something. They have paid thousands of pounds to come to a conversation school, but they will go to great lengths to say nothing to you or anyone. They will sit, four people in a small subicle, in silence for the 15 minutes before the lesson, take every precaution against speaking during the lesson then go home a few thousand yen lighter. Work. Sleep. Repeat. If you take this personally you become angry. If you see the funny side it's just draining. You finish work at 9.30, the only thing open is the izakaya. Bladdered. Drink. Karaoke. Pass out. Repeat. You have to be believe that they are not a representative cross section of Japanese society. You go to Hikkone Castle to enjoy the cherry blossom. You return to work excited and ask your students what they did for the cherry blos ...
Day 454: Miyazaki in Pictures
2007-04-16 01:53:00
Big GrinThis kid is like family to me. He had a sausage in one hand, and ice-cream in the other and I made him laugh. This gurn is the result. He's honestly really cute. Although he once touched my penis in a spirit of childlike curiosity shared by most Japanese children. And some adults.Miyazaki MountainsideI took a short break to Miyazaki in Kyushu. It was a tropical paradise with a slightly end-of-pier British family seaside holiday feel to it. Heaven meets Brighton...Two under a tree... our hotel was on a mountainside in a beautiful ice-cream scoop shaped valley that looked like it had been painted by studio Ghibli. Across the valley was a huge swathe of mountainside that had been deforested. Acres of sakura had been planted there. Looking over at it I felt like Oda Nobunaga must have felt when he rose from pleb-hood to conquer most of Japan...Big Red Lantern... from the other side of the bowl they looked stunning. We drove over there and it looked so picturesque it wou ...
Day 429: Sights and Sounds of Kyoto
2007-03-21 23:24:00
Oh HarryTrinidadian Harry. He's like the black Indiana Jones and his uncle's a doctor. For a smart man he has bad spelling and he once came onto a girl with the line, "show me your ear my uncle was a doctor". We've never let him forget this.Kyoto UniversityParts of this place I have seen are among the most rundown, beatup and third world places in Japan. If you got in here congratulations. You now have lurgy.First Sakura of the YearPeople who live in Kyoto don't believe me when I say this but I spotted this sakura tree on Thursday the 8th of March in Kyoto. I'm pretty sure it's incredibly early and may even be the first in Kyoto.Do I get a prize? Other than the self respect which comes with such a find.TerrifyingKyoto is full of scary buildings falling to pieces that are so oppressively dark and twisted that you could film Silent Hill around them. A DECENT version of Silent Hill with all the Freudian nuances, the Jungian anal stage grime and the Haruki Murakami references t ...

Don't Be KoiI like the fact it look like she's saying 'OI!' You know you would.Zen NorksWhat? Monks get bored too you know.Boards of KyotoThis is at Byodo In which is the Heian Era Temple you can see on the 10 yen coin. I stepped on this floor in shoes and a woman in a suit chased me. Shoulda known better at day 400 huh? DG.Plum BlossomedThe big plum vs cherry debate continues to this day and has caused vicious battles and cost many lives. Trinidadian Harry recently told me he prefers plum blossom because he thinks Japanese people are trained to like Cherry blossom and can't justify why. He's a big fan of logic. I think they can't justify why because our students can't even order a pizza, let alone discuss aesthetics. Sakura is clearly the more visually pleasing of the two and I know feel like I don't know Trinidadian Harry anymore. It used to be about the music. Now it's just about the drugs and hos and plum blossom.Counting Crows 1He also likes Sanjusangendo, whi ...

Day 419: Experts Agree Asahi Newspapers Suck As Much As Its Fizzy Piss Water Excuse For Beer
2007-03-11 12:19:00
Japan's Asahi Newspaper has been laying into your chain school recently. Blow after blow like Sylvia Saint syphoning petrol. It started with some 30-something fucktards getting caught in possession of drugs in Tokyo. Because apparently there's nothing else to do in Tokyo. The amount was clearly private use, but the media storm was huge and an important part of understanding Japan is knowing that here.... drugs is drugs. Most Japanese people don't know weed makes you okay with being bored and more likely to be dangerous to a Kit-Kat in a conbini than an old lady in a dark alley; all they know is "drugs is drugs and drugs is bad mmmkay?"So these nefarious English teaching drug baron pusher kiddy raping granny bashers accelerated a xenophobic trend that is not so underground in Japan as in England. The BNP is ridiculed like a senile racist relative by the mainstream in Blighty. They are the knuckle-dragging corner of human endeavour we have to tolerate so we can have high points ...
Day 417: Where The Stone Age Meets The Rock Age!
2007-03-09 10:47:00
Your salary doesn't allow you to go out every night, as much as you'd like to. When the tight times strike you gotta make your own entertainment on the cheap. This can lead to dazzling innovation, or its complete opposite. Pauly Shore.Jobe and I hadn't spent enough time together in a while so we decided to find Koga Ninja Village. We tried, we really did. But it was shrouded in mist somehow and we couldn't get there, so we went to BBs instead which is the greatest place on earth. While there we played video games old (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and new (Time Crisis 4), table tennis, shot some junior high school girls at close range with BB guns, played some pool, did some rock climbing, arm wrestled, read anime in massage chairs, played the drums, won cuddly toys on UFO catchers and generally regressed.Finishing the TMNT game you haven't seen for 15 years on free play makes you feel like someone is giving you money to doink their teenage daughter. While you wield nunchak ...
Day 411: What happened last night? I know, I'll check Pikki!
2007-03-04 04:37:00
Have you ever wanted to find out what happens on a drunken gaijin's nights out before he does? Well now you can! This website has allowed to provide a pictorial view of the teaching life in Japan. Not only is this a good deal less time consuming than other blogging options, but it's also a lot more interesting to look at than this blog.Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you John Yongfook Cockle, presenting to you the incredible...PIKKITechnorati Tags: aeon, ALT, anamatronics, baka gaijin, booby, chain school, crab, eigo no sensei, English teacher, engrish, freedom, gaijin, gaijin memoirs, gambatte, geos, gion, handicaps, hayao miyazaki, heiwado, Hokkaido, homo, Ice bar, izakaya, Japan, Japanese, Japanese cold, jaws, JET, jobby, k's blowing, kaitaku no mura, Kansai, kill bill, Kyoto, memoirs of a gaijin, meta, Misasagi, Moiwa yama, monterey hotel, Mount moiwa, nihon, Nova, otaru, photos, pikki, podcast, samurai, santa, sapporo, sapporo beer, sapporo brewery, schoolgirls, shark ...
Day 398: Antics, shenanigans and tomfoolery
2007-02-19 08:28:00
We arrived at kaitaku no mura period near Sapporo to enjoy some historical buildings. Immediately after arriving we thought bollocks to this and decided to go sledding and throw snowballs. In this video Autumn and John have a shambolic snow fight which I think is much funnier in reverse. First John wrestles Autumn into the snow, they throw snowballs at each other, then she falls over, then jumps into the snow again and again. In reverse John flies out of the snow three times, Autumn levitates to her feet, they catch snowballs expertly and then she lies still while John tenderly mounts her.Snow Wars on VimeoTechnorati Tags: aeon, ALT, baka gaijin, chain school, eigo no sensei, English teacher, engrish, gaijin, gaijin memoirs, geos, Hokkaido, Ice bar, Japan, Japanese, JET, kaitaku no mura, Kansai, Kyoto, memoirs of a gaijin, Misasagi, Moiwa yama, monterey hotel, Mount moiwa, nihon, Nova, otaru, photos, sapporo, snow festival, teach english, teach in japan, teacher, teaching English, teng ...
