BIGGS, Ore. (AP) - Three commercial truck drivers put on the brakes to help police stop a man who led authorities on a high-speed chase for more than 50 miles. The truckers pulled alongside each other and slowed to about 5 mph, forming a rolling roadblock. The fleeing driver stopped and fled on foot but was quickly captured, authorities said. Buddha Statue Stolen for Scrap Metal
2007-09-03 19:46:50
ELK RIVER, Minn. (AP) - The high demand and soaring prices for scrap metal appeared to be the reason a 7-foot statue of Buddha, covered in copper-laden bronze, was stolen from an outdoor temple shrine at the Thai Buddhist Center of Minnesota, police said. Police Chief Jeff Beahen said a 45-year-old Elk River woman was arrested Friday night, and a male family member was being looked at as another suspect in the theft. The statue, valued at $10,000, was stolen Wednesday night, and a detective issued a statewide alert to police and scrap dealers Thursday with a photo of the stolen statue. Early Friday afternoon, a recycling company in Monticello called the detective, saying they had taken in two pieces of scrap they believed to be from the statue. Police recovered the right shoulder and right hip of the statue, each weighing about 60 pounds, and with the help of the recycler were able to identify the woman who had brought them in. “There are another 10 pieces or so, and I hope ...

Malaysian Man Pulls Train With Teeth
2007-09-01 12:12:58
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) - A Malaysian man nicknamed “King Tooth” has pulled a seven-coach train using a steel rope clenched in his mouth in an attempt to set a new world record for the heaviest weight pulled with teeth. Grunting and gasping, Rathakrishnan Velu’s neck muscles strained and his face contorted Thursday as he hauled the nearly 328-ton train over more than 9 feet along tracks at a railway station in Kuala Lumpur. The feat was being submitted to the Guinness World Records, said Rathakrishnan’s manager, Anna Chidambar. Dozens of onlookers clapped and chanted “Malaysia Boleh!” or “Malaysia Can” when Rathakrishnan sat down and pulled the train, holding both tracks for support and pushing his booted feet against the wooden rafters to propel himself backward. Rathakrishnan, who partially attributes his strength to an Indian form of meditation, pulled the train 9 feet, 2.2 inches in the first attempt. His second and third att ...
