A 30-year-old man is lucky to be alive after he and his wife were assaulted by up to six occupants of a Hummer vehicle as they stood admiring it in inner-Melbourne early today.
Police said the man and his 32-year-old wife were admiring a silver-coloured Hummer - a large, US-style four-wheel drive - outside Kings car park on Flinders Lane, between Spencer and King streets, about 5.30am (AEST) when they were set upon.
The man said “I love your car” before he was attacked by up to six people, with at least one brandishing a metal bar.
“The victim was severely beaten and left unconscious,” Detective Senior Constable Brett Hampson said.
He was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with sever head injuries and blood loss.

Pot Announcement Out Window Draws Bust
2007-09-08 15:48:17
BOSTON (AP) - A pair of former Northeastern University freshmen are facing charges after prosecutors said one leaned out his dorm window Sunday and loudly told a woman in the dorm opposite his that he and his roommate were selling pot.
Oops. Two police officers happened to be nearby.
“If you’re looking for weed, my roommate Ferrante has some for sale,” Michael Emery said out the window, according to the Suffolk district attorney’s office.
Two plainclothes Boston officers in the building overheard the conversation and went to a second-floor room where they arrested Emery, 18, and Matthew Ferrante, 18, after finding about four ounces of marijuana; drug paraphernalia, including a scale; and several bottles of alcohol, prosecutors said.
The students were arraigned Tuesday on charges including possession of a class D substance with intent to distribute in a school zone, a count that carries a maximum of two years in jail.

Man Saws Halfway Through Leg Before Trial
2007-09-07 15:56:10
MALVERN, Ark. — A man under house arrest on rape and child exploitation charges sawed into his leg bone, then called for help, authorities said.
Jerry Scholes cut through his right calf and into the bone before he dialed 911 and paramedics took him to a hospital, where he remained Friday, police said.
He had been wearing an electronic monitor on that ankle, but prosecutor Richard Garrett said he believed the sawing was an attempt by Scholes to show he was incompetent for trial, not an effort to remove the monitor.
Garrett said Scholes had fashioned two tourniquets using plastic zip ties, and placed one on the leg and another on his arm.
Scholes was to have gone to trial Thursday on three counts of rape and one count of engaging children in explicit video or print. Instead, he was expected to plead guilty Friday to the explicit material charge and one rape count, charges that carry a combined sentence of up to 50 years in prison.
Scholes’ lawyer, Clint Mathis, asked a judge to ...

Body found in duct at school identified
2007-09-06 12:59:26
The body of a man found by maintenance workers in a large heating exhaust pipe at Russian Jack Elementary School this morning has been identified as 21-year-old Michael Nix, according to Anchorage Police Department spokesman Paul Honeman.
Nix was last seen when he left his apartment near the school on Aug. 24. He lived on East 20th Avenue, very close to Russian Jack, said his sister, Sasha Loyd. He’d been drinking the night he disappeared, she said.
An alcohol container was found with Nix’s body deep in the school venting system, where the large pipe branches out to several boilers, Honeman said.
The pipe is about 36 inches in diameter. It’s accessible from the roof. A person would likely have to crawl into it, though it is possible that someone could accidentally fall, Honeman said.
Staff in the building had been reporting a bad smell since last week, according to John Goetz, the first police officer on the scene.
