Sick man fined for going to work
2007-09-16 15:26:21
A sick Canadian bakery worker has been fined C$1,000 ($970) for ignoring an order to stay at home until he recovered from symptoms of salmonella poisoning, medical officials said on Thursday.
Health inspectors in Edmonton, Alberta, had told Adam Duerr to stay at home until tests showed he had recovered. But Duerr, 20, failed to have himself tested and went back to work.
He appeared in court on Wednesday. In addition, the bakery was fined C$1,500 and the owner C$1,000.
Gerry Predy, the medical officer at the local health authority, said the case was highly unusual.
“We almost never have people who disobey the order to stay off work,” he told Reuters. There was no evidence that any customers fell ill following Duerr’s return.

Ordeal of 100 coughs an hour man
2007-09-15 18:50:17
A LECTURER has coughed up to 100 times an hour for the past 13 years.
Nicholas Peake, 57, has tried scores of remedies as he struggles to find a cure.
He enjoys a blissful few minutes of peace when he wakes up in the morning before the coughing starts.
Then throughout the day, conversations with his new wife Mary-Rose, his friends, colleagues and students are interrupted as his throat becomes irritated and he coughs repeatedly.
The only way he can manage his condition is to constantly chew gum, something he detests.
Nicholas, of Lowton, near Leigh, Wigan, said: “I’ve seen various consultants, undergone countless tests and tried everything from acupuncture and homeopathy to new drugs.
“If someone said they could cure my condition for £5,000, I’d gladly pay the money.
“It’s very debilitating. I probably get about 15 minutes in the morning before it starts. Then I’ll cough for about an hour or two and it will continue throughout the day.

Man Trying to Sneak Into Concert Venue Impaled on Fence
2007-09-15 18:29:15
A man trying to climb a 12-foot, wrought-iron fence into a concert venue fell onto one of the inch-thick spikes, impaling his thigh, then held on while rescuers worked to cut part of the fence away.
The man drifted in and out of consciousness as firefighters used hydraulic cutters to snap three of the spikes, but he was speaking as rescuers loaded him into an ambulance about 45 minutes later, said John Kottmyer, assistant chief of York fire and rescue service.
“He had to actually try to hold himself up there,” Kottmyer said.
The man underwent surgery Wednesday night and was still hospitalized Thursday, according to David Nichols, chief of the West Manchester Township Fire Department. His identity was not released; no police charges were filed.
The fence’s sharp-ended spikes rise about 8 inches above a horizontal bar, and when the man fell, one spike penetrated his leg completely. Nichols said the rescuers could not have removed the man from the fence.

Man Steals Car to Turn Himself In
2007-09-14 13:01:43
A western New York man faces grand larceny charges after being pulled over in a car that he said he stole so he could turn himself in on another charge.
Ontario County sheriff’s deputies say they pulled over Vincent Estrada Junior, 29, and found that the car he was driving had recently been stolen from a parking lot.
Police said Estrada was wanted on a family court warrant, and he told deputies he stole the car so he could drive to the Geneva City Police Department to turn himself in.
But he never made it there. Deputies say they arrested him and drove him back to Canandaigua to face the car-theft charges.
Estrada was being held in Ontario County Jail on Thursday, in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.

Hey, big winner! Or maybe not..
2007-09-12 13:48:02
A Canadian judge refused on Monday to dismiss a lawsuit against a race track operator who says a C$6.5 million ($6.2 million) winning ticket is really a computer mistake.
Elmer Patzer says he won the money from Great Canadian Gaming Corp when, in November 2004, he tried to cash in some old betting slips at an automatic betting machine at the company’s Hastings Park Race horse-racing track in Vancouver.
The machine stamped one of his slips a big winner, but Great Canadian refused to pay. The company said its computer records show the machine issued the payment voucher by mistake.
The British Columbia Supreme Court judge said while Patzer is not sure which of the many races he won the money on, the company’s request to have the lawsuit dismissed is premature. A trial date has not been set.

Tot Tumbles From Repossessed Car
2007-09-10 13:14:46
A repossession crew got a surprise when a 4-year-old boy leaped out of the sport-utility vehicle they were towing away.
Fashawn Parker, of Naperville, was sitting in the back seat of a Ford Excursion that was parked outside of a house on Thursday when the repo crew approached, hooked the car to a tow truck and began driving away, Aurora police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said.
Fashawn opened the door and jumped out into a construction area, Ferrelli said. It was not known how fast the truck was going, Ferrelli said, but the truck was moving in slow traffic because of construction.
Fashawn was treated for minor injuries and released from a nearby hospital.
The tow truck stopped after a colleague in a separate car phoned the driver to tell him that someone had fallen out of the back seat of the SUV, Ferrelli said.
No charges were filed against the two men driving the repo truck, police said, adding that the men checked the back of the truck and did not see the boy inside.
