Six Things to Consider When Proposing Marriage
2007-12-07 16:19:01
There are a few things that many of us don’t think about when it comes to marriage proposals. The reason is probably because it’s a hard thing to prepare for, and because it hopefully doesn’t happen that often.
Here are a few ideas for those of you on both the proposer and proposee side.
1) If you choose to ask your soon-to-be fiance’s parents, think through the words. You’ll be nervous and there’s no need to be unprepared. A friend of mine recently asked his girlfriend’s dad what he thought about marrying his own daughter. The father’s response was to laugh and say that he already had a wife. Awkward.
2) Making the moment special is important, but don’t get so caught up in the dramatics that you lose sight of love. Keep it sweet and keep it about the two of you.
3) If you have an idea that you may be proposed to soon, take a minute or two to think of how you will accept. During the actual moment you may be so overcome that you are speechless. Th ...

Craigslist as an Online Dating Service
2007-12-03 10:15:49
It’s free for everyone and it does not discriminate! The problem: it does not discriminate.
Craigslist is a great dating opportunity if you have a strong stomach and are up for an interesting read. You will have to weed out a lot of scary and boring offers, but it’s definitely an option for you.
Here are few tips if you chose to explore Craigslist:
1) Whatever you do don’t give out your last name or phone number in your profile and avoid those that do. If your e-mail address includes your last name, consider creating an address that does not.
2) Don’t be discouraged by the raunchy or overly aggressive profiles. While you shouldn’t contact those people, understand that there are a few good ones out there and you shouldn’t give up too easy.
3) Don’t ignore profiles because he or she doesn’t have a photo. Because Craigslist is so public I can understand why someone would choose not to post one. Just make sure to ask for a photo after you’ve exchanged a few e-mails.

Gifts for Your New Boyfriend
2007-11-25 21:56:50
I struggle with gift giving, but when it comes to buying holiday gifts for someone I’ve just started dating, I’m helpless. I think the first step is to feel the other person out. Find out if he is big into holidays by asking generic questions about holiday plans and family traditions. Depending on how excited he responds you might be able to figure out how serious he is about trading gifts.
The next step is to eliminate the thought of anything romantic or long term. Two tickets to a concert next spring might be a little over the top since that would require him to be dating you four months from now. Don’t freak him out. Keep it realistic.
Here are a few ideas for those of you out there gift shopping for your new man that won’t scare him or break your budget.
The Swaba Solar Jar
JBuds Hi-Fi Noise-Reducing Ear Buds
Victorinox Swiss Army Champion Plus
Chappelle’s Show - Season 1

Free Hugs Campaign
2007-11-23 11:24:17
Maybe you’ve heard, maybe you haven’t. Either way it’s a nice story to read once, or multiple times. The reminder: blessings and love are all around you just need to keep your eyes open.
The story is about Juan Mann (and now many others all over the world) who in a moment of uncertainty created a cardboard sign that said “Free Hugs.” He went out on the street and held up the sign and although many people looked at him with fear, many others took him up on the offer. Now, after being banned and shunned, he’s made it perfectly acceptable to ask for hugs and is also well-known. He’s been on Oprah and has a kick-ass Web site, www.freehugscampaign.org

Eating on a First Date
2007-11-17 16:40:11
A friend of mine is having trouble incorporating food into her dates. It seems that either she plans for it and then is surprised to be without it, or she loses all sense when it comes to making decisions about it.
Date Number One: A young hippy neighbor invites her out on a dinner date. She’s surprised when he shows up at her apartment dressed in pressed khaki. She’s taken off guard again when he drives her 30 minutes away to a very nice restaurant she had only heard about.
At this point she feels very under dressed and nervous because the man before her is not the casual “dude” from around the corner. Now he’s this well put together grown-up with intellectual ambitions. Someone she actually has to impress.
When the waiter to take their order she is not focused and uncertain what to order. She finally decides on a steak and when asked how she would like it cooked she responded, “hot.”
He never asked her out again.
Date Number Two: Starving af ...

The Largest Diamond, Ever
2007-11-15 09:56:05
For only $16.2 million, Georges Marciano, the founder of Guess clothing company, purchased the largest high-quality diamond ever found. Sotheby’s (one of the world’s largest auction houses) sold the 84.37 carat rock last week and now it’s making the news.
You obviously can’t wear this thing, but it might make a nice centerpiece. But then again, who feels comfortable with a $16 million centerpiece. Maybe Mr. Marciano just wants to tell people that he has it and then leave it in a safe somewhere.
If only I were rich…

A Scrunchy From The Woman Before Me
2007-11-13 21:32:36
I had been dating my boyfriend for about a year when I decided to bring over an alarm clock. I wasn’t moving in, per se, but I was staying over enough nights to require a proper waking each morning.
It was a simple enough process, really. I moved the night stand on my side of the bed away from the wall an inch or two and threw the cord behind the table. I wasn’t able to reach the outlet by just standing there so I laid down on the floor to reach the plug.
Not surprisingly I had to reach through an assortment of dust bunnies and change to connect the plug to the outlet. What was surprising, though, was the presence of a yellow scrunchy. Maybe it was more like an elastic, but either way, it was not mine.
In walks the BF and I throw the soft hair tie his direction asking who the other woman is. He laughs and I laugh knowing that there is no other woman. I know this because of the dust bunnies and because no one has worn a yellow scrunchy since the 90s… or at least I hop ...

Great Pick-Up Lines in Online Dating
2007-11-08 23:56:20
1. Come here often?
2. You give great e-mail.
3. You’re an excellent writer. Not everyone knows how to use an em dash.
4. Beautiful picture. With you in it, I barely noticed the Grand Canyon.
5. All my favorite people are Sagittarius.
6. You look hot on paper. I bet you’re even better in person.

Hugs Might Get You Detention
2007-11-07 16:21:55
Have you read about the eighth-grade girl from Missouri who received two days of detention for hugging her friends? Apparently the school district has a strict rule against public displays of affection, which is evident in the fact that this otherwise well-behaved 13-year-old served her second day of detention yesterday.
The associated press quotes the student saying: “I’m just hoping the school board will open their eyes and just realize that maybe they shouldn’t be punishing us for hugs.”
Well said. For the full story visit MSNBC.com.
I agree that public displays of affection (often referred to as PDA in middle-schools across the country) is inappropriate. I don’t like doing it and I don’t like seeing other people doing it, but what is IT? I think the problem here is in the semantics.
According to the DatingTales First Edition Dictionary, public display of affection is defined as physical contact between two or more people romantically involved in the presence of ...

The Five Unavoidable Red Flags
2007-11-05 22:57:37
We all have been in a situation where we look back and say we should’ve known our ex was an abuser, a cheater, or a jerk. It’s easy to do in hindsight. I know because I’ve done it at least 18 times.
The reality is that because we liked the guy we justified the red flag so much so that it became more pink than red. That may be OK to do sometimes, but be honest with yourself. If, in fact, the flag is very red, then don’t ignore it and get out before it’s too late. Here are five examples of red flags:
1. Too rough. If even when playing around he grabs you too hard, twists an arm, or pushes you, he’s no good. A respectful person will never try to hurt his partner, even when they are just playing around.
2. “Who’s that guy?” syndrome. Chances are that if you get 20 questions over seemingly unimportant parts of your day that he is insecure. Everyone is a little jealous, even in a healthy relationship, but know the difference between a li ...

Egg Donation
2007-11-03 10:14:48
I have a friend considering it.
At first it was hard for me to understand egg donation. I can’t imagine wanting to undergo all the hormone treatments, “the procedure,” and then just dealing with the idea that one of my offspring would be out there wandering around. But I realize that my friend is struggling with this choice and I realize my perception may be a bit insensitive. So I did what any of us would do in that situation.
I Googled it.
My search pulled up The Complete Guide to Egg Fertility and Donation and after coming across this sentence: “Egg donation is one of the very few jobs where females make more than males” I realized my friend might be on to something.
Turns out egg donation is more common than I realized, and for someone like my friend who doesn’t have an attachment to children and could certainly spare the time and use the money, it doesn’t seem like such a big deal. Especially if she’s able to make someone out there so happy.
