Sugar and Obesity
2007-10-15 14:00:00
An analysis of two large studies in New Zealand has found that sugar intake does not correlate with obesity. Sugar intake was primarily from beverages. Previous studies have shown that total caloric intake is strongly associated with weight gain.
There was an inverse relationship between sugar intake and obesity, with the obese consuming the least sugar. This may be due to multiple factors including: preferance for high fat foods, use of artificial sweeteners and diet adherence.
The study also found that as sugar intake increased, fat intake decreased proportionatly, so total caloric intake was unaffected.

Vitamin D and Childhood Obesity
2007-10-08 14:00:00
Vitamin D deficiency is widely prevalent and contributes to insulin resistance. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with increased BMI, increased blood pressure, and decreased HDL cholesterol. Those with the lowest Vitamin D levels had significantly higher BMI than those with lesser deficiency.
Humans are able to manufacture Vitamin D from sun exposure, but people living in northern latitudes along with widespread sunscreen use limit this process. Dietary sources are scarce and optimal levels can probably only be reached by supplementation or sun exposure.

Diet and Lifestyle Factors Associated With Body Fat Distribution in Women
2007-10-01 14:00:00
Body fat distributed above the waist in women is associated with increased risk of heart disease, stroke and hypertension. Normally, estrogen prevents much central body fat accumulation in women, though men usually gain central body fat easily.
Some of the factors associated with increased upper body fat in women are low physical activity, depression, smoking, low vitamin C intake, low calcium intake, low dairy intake and high fat consumption. The strongest correlations found were for low physical activity and low vitamin C intake.

Prebiotics and Body Mass Index in Adolescents
2007-09-24 14:00:00
Prebiotics are indigestible components of foods that promote the growth of specific bacteria in the colon. Supplementation with prebiotics can have a significant effect on BMI increases during puberty. A recent study showed that when calcium intake is adequate the improvement in BMI was even greater and the improvement was still measurable a year after the supplementation stopped.
Prebiotics are normally found in unprocessed carbohydrates including oats, soybeans, whole wheat and barley. Examples of prebiotics include Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), Inulin and Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS). They are also available as food supplements.

Fatness, Fitness and Insulin Sensitivity
2007-09-17 14:00:00
It is well established that exercise improves insulin sensitivity through both glycogen depletion and activation of non-insulin mediated glucose transport.
Obesity is associated with insulin resistance. Aerobic exercise is at least partially corrective for obese individuals.
Overall, the best insulin sensitivity is found in normal weight, fit individuals and the worst insulin sensitivity is found in overweight, unfit individuals.

Obesity Increases Risk of Osteoporosis
2007-09-10 14:00:00
Obesity results in loss of bone mineral density in both postmenopausal women and female mice. Younger females are protect by their higher levels of circulating estrogen. This places obese women at greater risk of osteopenia and osteoporosis.
The relationship between obesity and bone mineral loss suggests causes that are most likely multifaceted and may included Vitamin D deficiency and low grade acidosis where calcium is leached out of bone tissue to buffer acidified body fluids.

Sugar and soft drinks not a major cause of childhood obesity
2007-09-03 14:00:00
A large UK study found that intake of sugar and soft drinks is only weakly associated with obesity in children. Much stronger correlations were found for total caloric intake, activity levels, and high fat and protein intake.
Only very high consumers of sugar and soft drinks showed any increase in obesity.

Protein associated with obesity in Swiss children
2007-08-29 14:00:00
Childhood obesity rates have risen in most developed countries, not just the United States. A study of both normal weight and overweight Swiss children found several factors associated with increased weight in children.
The amount protein as a percent of food intake was significantly higher in overweight children. Calories, carbohydrates and fat were not correlated with Body Mass Index (BMI), but protein was. Likewise, meat intake was significantly correlated with BMI.
Time spent watching TV and playing computer games was also associated with increased BMI.

Appetite and food intake after whey and glucose drinks
2007-08-23 13:41:12
A small group of both normal weight and overweight boys were studied to measure the amount of food eaten shortly after consuming either a glucose drink or a whey drink.
The glucose drink decreased subsequent food intake for... ...

Ghrelin a marker for Respiratory Quotient
2007-08-15 14:03:20
Respiratory Quotient is a calculation that determines which substrate (fat or carbohydrate) is currently being burned. It is a complex process that involves measuring oxygen inhaled and carbon dioxide exhaled and must be performed in a... ...

Diet composition and risk of overweight and obesity
2007-08-13 14:58:09
This large study examined the diets of women living in the southwest US. Greater intake of fat, protein and animal protein were associated with a greater risk of obesity.
The researchers recommended replacing some animal... ...

CLA helpful for overweight, but not obese.
2007-08-02 14:08:40
There have been quite a few studies on CLA supplementation over the last few years with mixed results. Overall, CLA appears to be helpful for weight loss. CLA, like other polyunsaturated fats, seems to improve insulin sensitivity.
