Quick tip : Determining the cooking time of a fish
2007-08-15 22:54:00
by Scott BirdAs you may have noticed, I love seafood. If you're just venturing in to this world, however, you may be wondering just how long to cook your latest purchase. Fortunately it's not as difficult as you might think. You can get a rough idea simply by looking at how thick the fish is (at the thickest point). For roasting or grilling, count on approximately 10 minutes per inch. Moderately hot oven, perhaps 375F (190C). Adjust this according to taste.Another estimate which may be used is 15 minutes per pound. Once again, this is only a guideline - adjust according to taste. To test whether this is donePoke a toothpick into the thickest part of the fish. If the skin is no longer translucent and the flesh flakes easily, it's done. Also - if it's a whole fish - the eyes will have turned white.Beautiful.

Navy Seals Perfect Pushup
2007-08-14 10:29:00
I've seen these almost 3 times now in 2 days, so I've realized that it's something that I need to have a more in depth look at. During a recent trip to Las Vegas, I saw a magazine/ ad showing this Navy Seal Perfect Pushup device, then saw it again on a television in a Casino. I'm not going to wait for the 3rd time, I'm going to act and get a pair. It's the traditional two handle pushup stand but with a functional twist, literally. The military realized that 73% of Navy Seals were on disability after 20 years of service so they spent an entire year researching why and found that it was the traditional weight training exercises that did the damage. They switched to functional training and the Perfect Pushup was invented.Navy SEALs and Push upsSEALs strengthen their bodies using several exercise routines, but none is more prevalent than pushups. Even before a SEAL candidate arrives at Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training, they must pass a physical exam that includes ...

Review : Total Gym 1000
2007-08-12 20:45:00
by Scott BirdI love this thing. If you’ve somehow managed to avoid the Total Gym infomercials featuring the well-known faces of Chuck Norris and Christie Brinkley, the photo at right should give you an idea of the basic arrangement. It’s essentially an inclined bench (with a sliding pad), and a cable at each side to lift/lower the user along the bench. A very simple setup. The company was founded in 1974 by Tom Campanaro, Larry Westfall, and Dale Mc Murray - with the product changing little since then. As the height of the incline was soon changeable (with 6 heights available on the 1000 model I’m currently using), adjusting the resistance of various bodyweight exercises became a simple matter and the Total Gym products were taken up largely for rehab use. In that respect they’re still ideal. In the mid-90s the Total Gym was brought to a home-user market, with an advertising campaign featuring the Norris/Brinkley combination in 1996 and a website (totalgym.com) the same year. Seve ...

What to look for when buying fish
2007-08-11 22:24:00
by Scott BirdSeveral years ago one of the major newspapers here listed a half-dozen Australian restaurants in the 'you have to try this sometime' category. Most of them were big names, in prime locations and were accompanied by unsurprisingly expensive menus. One of them, however, was a tiny fish 'n' chip shop.Since we first ventured over there to check it out, we've been regular customers. Why? They clearly know how to buy fish. It's always excellent. If you're not lucky enough to have a place like this nearby, you can still reap the rewards of great seafood by keeping your eyes open. Whether you shop at a fishmonger or a supermarket, there are a few things that will help ensure you end up with a beautiful meal.Unpackaged fish, as at a fishmonger or supermarket fish counterNo 'fishy smell'All fish have a smell, but it only becomes 'fishy' once the fish is in decline. When it's fresh, it won't have a strong odour at all. If it has that 'fishy' smell, don't buy it.NB : If ...

The Dos and Donts for Effective Fat Loss
2007-08-09 12:21:00
by Paul BeckerThis seems to be the question on everyone's mind, and for good reason, fat is so easy to acquire and so hard to get rid of. Most bodies love to store fat, it's good security for when you run out of food. This is unlikely, but your body doesn't know that.Unfortunately, the body loves storing fat so much that it will burn anything else available (muscle tissue, stored carbohydrate, etc.) before digging into the fat reserves. Unless you trick it.The first thing your body will burn is stored carbohydrates in the form of glycogen. The next is muscle tissue, only then does it grudgingly dip into the fat stores. This is why most diets don't work, especially "starvation" diets. When you suddenly cut off the food supply, a survival mechanism kicks in causing the body to store every little bit of fat that it can! This results in weight loss, but not much fat loss, and as soon as you DO eat something, it immediately gets stored as fat to replace any that was used. This is N ...

Just like an Olympic athlete
2007-08-08 18:27:00
I love coming across stuff like this.If you have diabetes, or know someone who does, you may have heard the term PAD - Peripheral Artery Disease. This blocks the blood supply to major arteries; often affecting the legs and feet. This can cause anything from ulcers to gangrene (leading to amputation). Nasty stuff.A new procedure may help change all that.Developed at Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital, the process essentially works by isolating the effected limb and rapidly pumping blood to it. This tricks the body into growing new blood vessels.According to Dr Rodney Lane - the man behind the new procedure :The arteries are performing at the level of an Olympic athlete, running at pace, when the patient is lying in bed.Beautiful.

Tips On Losing Fat Without Really Trying
2007-08-08 17:28:00
by Aja PerkinsHealthy eating is very important. Here are some tips on losing weight without really trying. Fill up on fiber. Choose whole grains, fruits and vegetables, high fiber cereals, dries beans, lentils, or other legumes. Your goal is 25 to 30 grams daily. Food hihg in fiber make you feel full without lots of calories. Drink a glass of water before each meal and you'll get a feelingof fullness. By sipping water throughout the day, you'll know when you're really hungry. Drink at least eight 8oz. glasses of water daily. I drink 1-1 1/2 gallons daily. Eat more fish. Fish and poultry have less calories then beef, lamb and pork. Veal has the lowest calories of the meats, but it is higher in cholesterol than beef or lamb. Limit your salt intake. Instead spice up your diet with pepper, lemons, basil and oregano (or Mrs.. Dash) and you'll never miss salt. Your blood pressure will improve and you'll lose fat faster! Buy salt-free salsa and sugarless jam as snacks. They taste grea ...

Who is Scott Bird?
2007-08-07 04:53:00
Rob's on vacation for about a week, and I've been asked to step in and contribute an article or three. Before we get underway, however, you're probably wondering just who I am.I'm the editor of the strength training site Straight to the Bar. I believe that the human body is an amazing machine, and the site looks at the fastest, strongest and most powerful athletes in a range of fields. When I'm not in front of the keyboard, I'm generally either in the kitchen (I love to cook), under the bar or exploring the world; camera in hand. It's a beautiful life.Hope you enjoy the articles.

Gorillas Eat Vegetables Shouldn't You?
2007-08-07 04:30:00
Gorilla's eat mostly vegetables and fruit and are one of the most powerful animals on the planet. The fact that they're vegetarian and of such immense size and strenght blows me away. There is still a lot of debate about whether humans should model Gorilla's and eat a plant based diet. The fact is that gorillas have a completely different digestive system than we do and that they can tolerate much more fruit because of their superior intestinal flora. However, what we can learn from them is that they are a massive animal and they eat pretty much ONLY vegetables and fruit. There's power in that. I've said for a long time on this blog and in my writing the importance of having vegetables with each meal. Most recently a post about eating a salad with breakfast. Vegetables provide nutrients (albeit very few these days due to poor farming practices), much needed fiber and bulk and help us to eat smaller meals with less calories but yet feel full. This leads to a healthier colon ...

Changes Unfolding At Former Fat Guy dot Com
2007-08-06 18:53:00
The Emperor is gifted with the skills to successfully lead others. He can turn chaos into order, provide structure to that which is unbound. He is quick of mind and confident in his power and right to rule, and does so in a just manner. Although stern by nature, he truly is the ultimate father figure. He will provide as needed, teach those with unanswered questions, protect the vulnerable and set and maintain boundaries. His perfect world runs on schedule and is free of any disturbances. What the Emperor must be wary of is setting boundaries and rules where none are needed. If he isn’t, he may well become a tyrant. [Rob's Note:] This was my Tarot card for today on my facebook account. Now, I'm pretty open to a lot of things, but this is getting really freaky because I've been very very busy these past few days with a project I'm proud to be heading up.I have a very special line up of guest writers that I'm putting together for my new blog www.formerfatguyblog.com . Weight Loss Week In Review
2007-08-04 16:08:00
This has been an amazing week with lots of great information. Here is a small round up of weight loss information posted on my blogs this week.Calorie Quality: A personal trainer from California, Joshua Carter brought up a very good point about not all calories being equal. Foods have an impact on your hormonal response and your primary concern for weight loss should be to manage them. The quality of your calories is the critical point.Four Things You Didn't Know About Me: An idea spurred by my friend Chris Brogan had me sit down and post four things you may not know about me. Somewhat interesting I guess if you want to get to know your host a bit more.Shawn Phillips Podcast: Shawn's weekly Start Strong Monday Podcast to get you going for the week was about hunger vs cravings. A great listen. All of Shawn Phillips audio clips are archived for ease of listening. Listen to each of his 2 to 4 minute talks to learn more about metabolism and fat burning.Luci's 100 Pound Weight Los ...
