Ginger
2008-07-31 11:24:00
Ginger is probably one of the world's favourite medicines and cooking ingredients. Ginger root has been used in Ayurveda for centuries and its fresh pungent flavour makes it an essential spice for Indian and Asian cuisine.Ginger is a creeping perennial on a thick tuberous rhizome. In the first year, a green, erect, reed-like stem about 60 cm high grows from this rhizome. The plant has narrow, lanceolate to linear-lanceolate leaves 15 to 30 cm long, which die off each year. The flower scape grows directly from the root and terminates in a long, curved spike. A white or yellow flower grows from each spike. Continue Reading >>

Mental Test Spots Alzheimer's Risk
2008-07-02 06:06:00
(HealthDay News) -- A new questionnaire may help in both diagnosing older adults facing dementia and also in identifying individuals who need help with daily living. The Everyday Cognition instrument consists of 39 questions to be answered by people who know the patient well."There have been a number of studies that show that people with mild cognitive impairment who have functional problems in addition to performing poorly on neuropsychological testing are more likely to progress in the near future," said study author Sarah Tomaszewski Farias, an assistant professor of neurology at the University of California, Davis, Medical Center in Sacramento. "One of our hopes is that this instrument will be able to help identify very early on those people at increased risk for developing Alzheimer's disease."That would help both patients and family members prepare for what lies ahead and identify patients who need to be more closely monitored. In addition, Farias said, the test would also help id ...

Health Tip: Swing Set Safety
2008-06-26 05:36:00
(HealthDay News) -- Children's swing sets must be properly selected and assembled to prevent serious injury. Here are recommendations on choosing and assembling a swing set, from the U.S. National Safety Council:Make sure the equipment is very sturdy, and look for sets that can be changed or upgraded to accommodate your child's growth. Secure the legs of the set in below-ground concrete. If you use anchors that come with the set, keep them below ground. Make sure all cables are taut. Cap any screws or bolts. Slides should not be too steep -- no more than a 30-degree slope. The slide must have tall sides to prevent falls, and an area at the bottom where children can regain balance and sit upright. Avoid sets with "S" hooks, or any parts that can pinch, cut or crush small fingers. Avoid any rings that are less than 5 inches or greater than 10 inches in diameter. In general, equipment should not be higher than 8t feet tall. And metal equipment, used in hot weather, can lead to burns.

Some Fats Deserve Change of Heart
2008-06-01 03:01:00
(HealthDay News) -- Fewer than half of Americans realize there are two types of dietary fat that actually help their hearts, a new survey shows. So, while many have heeded the warnings about the cardiovascular dangers of trans fats and saturated fats, the American Heart Association (AHA) now thinks people need to pay more attention to the cardiovascular benefits conferred by polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats.As a result of its recent survey, the AHA's new Face the Fats campaign has harnessed the power of the Internet to encourage people to view these lesser known fats with new respect."We're trying to take education to the next level and say when you have the opportunity to choose, choose the better fat, not the bad fat," said Dr. Clyde W. Yancy, the association's president-elect.The campaign's Web page presents information at varying levels of sophistication. The pages include an interactive quiz on fats, menus, recipes and a Fats 101 course. A Fats Translator calculates a b ...

HRT Increases Stroke Risk
2008-04-29 04:59:00
(HealthDay News) -- No matter when postmenopausal women start hormone replacement therapy (HRT), high doses of the treatment increase their risk of stroke, a new study finds. The risk for stroke does appear lower in younger women taking HRT and in those taking the lowest doses of estrogen, Harvard researchers say. However, in women who took high doses of hormones, that increased risk was as much as 62 percent."If you take medium to higher doses of hormone therapy, you are at increased risk of stroke," said Dr. James Liu, chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at MacDonald Women's Hospital, University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland."If you are on estrogen, the risks of clotting abnormalities are slightly increased versus if you are not on estrogen," Liu said. "So, the risk of stroke is increased."The report was published in the April 28 edition of the Archives of Internal Medicine. In the study, Francine Grodstein and colleagues at Brigham and Women's Hospit ...

Exercise Combats Cancer Fatigue
2008-04-20 07:51:00
(HealthDay News) -- Exercise may help improve fatigue caused by cancer and its treatments, new research says."A lot of time, the medical response to patients is that they should expect to be fatigued, that it is a normal side effect. If patients are told that fatigue is just a side effect and to accept it, what they are not getting is any advice or support to help them cope," review lead author Fiona Camp, a lecturer at the University of the West of England in Bristol, said in a prepared statement.Camp and her colleagues examined data on more than 2,000 cancer patients in 28 studies, which tested exercise programs that lasted from three weeks to eight months. The typical duration was 12 weeks. Walking and stationary bike riding were the most common types of exercise in the studies. The researchers found that exercise is more effective at combating cancer-related fatigue than the usual care provided to patients."Exercise shouldn't be used in isolation but should definitely be included a ...
