ConsumerLabs claims 44 percent of echinacea products failed testing
2008-03-15 04:34:00
According to the company, 11 of 25 products purchased for testing failed analysis. However, that number includes six products eliminated before testing began because of misleading or ambiguous labeling. Of the 19 actually tested, five failed (26 percent).Four contained insufficient levels of echinacea markers, and one had excessive microbial contamination. Michael McGuffin, president of the American Herbal Products Association, commented, "It's just not true that 44 percent of the tested echinacea products failed. It's truly unfortunate that a company that represents itself as a scientific savior for consumers has chosen to go for the sensational headlines at the expense of a scientifically sound analysis." Harvard Medical School to create institute for nontraditional medicine
2008-03-13 23:18:00
Research will address treatments such as acupuncture, herbal therapies, and massage and examine the ways in which they interact with traditional medicine. "You can't practice medicine these days without knowing what patients are doing, and a tremendous amount of them are doing it," said Dr. Dan Federman, who helped develop Harvard's new program. The program, established with a $10 million gift from San Francisco philanthropist Bernard Osher and $2 million from the school, will work in conjunction with a similar one at the University of California at San Francisco. Black cohosh study demonstrates no benefits for breast cancer survivors
2008-03-12 04:29:00
According to a recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, researchers at Columbia University concluded that treatment with 40 mg/day of black cohosh was no more effective than placebo at relieving hot flashes, heart palpitations, headaches, and irritability in breast cancer survivors, although there was reported reduction in sweating."For breast cancer survivors, our data provide little evidence of either harm or benefit from using black cohosh to control hot flashes, although a reduction in sweating may be important to patients," the research team concluded. Mark Blumenthal of the American Botanical Council pointed out that black cohosh is currently used in Germany and other European countries for menopause and painful menstruation, and that many European studies have shown the herb to be beneficial. FDA Warnings to Food Companies Based on Misinterpretation
2008-03-11 09:53:00
FDA Warnings to Food Companies Based on Misinterpretation of Food Additive LawJune 7, 2001: Recent FDA warnings to manufacturers of food products containing herbs are founded on misinterpretation and misuse of food additive regulations passed in 1958, according to Rob McCaleb, president of the Herb Research Foundation in Boulder, CO.Citing concerns about "the integrity of the conventional food supply," the FDA sent warning letters yesterday to three food manufacturers, cautioning them that their products contain "novel ingredients" that are not generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the agency. More warning letters will follow during the coming week, FDA claims.McCaleb asserts that the ingredients singled out by the FDA are neither food additives nor "novel food ingredients," but rather whole foods that have been safely consumed as herbal teas, dietary supplements, and traditional foods for decades. "The FDA is again abusing food additive law in much the same way it did with herbs befo ...
No colchicine in ginkgo: Independent testing refutes results of flawed research
2008-03-10 07:07:00
Independent analyses of raw powdered Ginkgo biloba and ginkgo extract have discredited a recent study suggesting that ginkgo supplements contain the toxic alkaloid colchicine. The flawed study, "Identification of Colchicine in Placental Blood from Patients Using Herbal Medicines," by Petty et al., was released on the American Chemical Society's website on August 4, 2001, but apparently has not yet been formally published. The authors of the study warn that consumption of ginkgo supplements by pregnant women may pose dangers to developing fetuses, based on an analysis that they believe revealed the presence of colchicine in ginkgo.Major media sources have publicized the study's conclusions, but herb experts and other scientists have strongly criticized the validity of the conclusions and the research methods used by the researchers. Some have suggested that the investigators misidentified a non-toxic ginkgo compound as colchicine. This ginkgo compound reportedly has a structure simila ...
History of Herbs
2008-03-08 09:05:00
Herbs have played an important part in man's life for countless years -- in his politics, romance, love, religion, health, and superstition.Celery was used by the Abyssinians for stuffing pillows. Ancient Greeks and Romans crowned their heroes with dill and laurel. Dill also was used by the Romans to purify the air in their banquet halls. Some herbs were given magical properties, probably because of their medicinal uses. The early Chinese considered artemisia to have special charms. In France during the Middle Ages, babies were rubbed with artemisia juices to protect them from the cold. Ancient Greeks used sweet marjoram as a valuable tonic, and parsley as a cure for stomach ailments. Rosemary was eaten in the Middle Ages for its tranquilizing effects and as a cure-all for headaches.Chives, still a common herb often found growing wild, had economic importance throughout Asia and many Mediterranean countries. Odd as it seems now, the early Dutch settlers in this country intentionally pl ...

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaJump to: navigation, searchFor other uses, see Herb (disambiguation).Basil, a common herbA(n) herb (pronounced /??b/ or /?h?b/; see pronunciation differences) is a plant that is valued for qualities such as medicinal properties, flavor, scent, or the like.[1]Herbs have a variety of uses including culinary, medicinal, or in some cases even spiritual usage. The green, leafy part of the plant is often used, but herbal medicine makes use of the roots, flowers, seeds, root bark, inner bark (cambium), berries and sometimes the pericarp or other portions. General usage differs between culinary herbs and medicinal herbs.A medicinal herb may be a shrub or other woody plant, whereas a culinary herb is a non-woody plant, typically using the leaves.
