Mesothelioma Cancer Still Affecting People
2008-02-10 21:39:00
Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that forms in the linings of the chest (the pleura) abdomen (the peritoneum) or heart (pericardium). This cancer is caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a fibrous incombustible mineral used for fireproofing, electrical insulation, building materials, brake linings, and chemical filters. When this chemical is inhaled, it can be extremely toxic and cause this type of cancer. Asbestos was widely used especially before mid-1970s in industrial products such as cement, brake and clutches, roof, floor and ceiling tiles, textiles, and insulation. The people that are most likely to suffer from mesothelioma are those who were exposed to asbestos fibers at work. Since mesothelioma usually has a latency period of 20-50 years where the illness is not apparent, most people with this cancer did not know about it until it was too late. The disease usually appeared many years after having been exposed to asbestos, even if it was only during a short summer job ...

Mesothelioma's Convoluted Settlement Issues
2008-02-09 12:28:00
A case of mesothelioma causes a patient and his family a lot of pain and suffering but since there is no real gauge of measuring the damage done by this disease, the amount given as settlement varies from case to case and from one state to another depending upon their amendments and legislations.Starting a lawsuit is an expensive affair and it could affect the sufferer and their respective family greatly; the sufferer may be able to get assistance with the cost of the lawsuit, any medical treatment and other such expenses affecting the sufferer. The lawsuit will work on the basis that the sufferer of mesothelioma did not know they were coming into regular and sustained contact with the asbestos. This can then lead to illness and possibly death. With their lives being cut short considerably; then the companies should compensate accordingly to this; based on lost earnings and further compensation to the family of the sufferer if they died through the condition if asbestosis. The main fa ...

Scientists in Japan claim to have developed techology to melt asbestos and prevent release of fibers into the air
2008-02-08 22:08:00
Researchers with Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology claim that they can melt asbestos. Their new technology has been reported to melt the flame-resistant material into a liquid. The liquid then cools and turns into a sealed solid that can be handled and removed without releasing dangerous asbestos fibers. The process uses strong infrared rays from a newly developed gasket. The researchers also claim that, while their technology will melt asbestos from a concrete wall in seconds, it will not harm the concrete wall underneath. Asbestos was widely used in industrial settings for many decades, and removing it safely has been expensive and difficult. Inhaling asbestos fibers, which are easily released into the air when asbestos-containing materials are disturbed, can cause a variety of serious respiratory diseases, including malignant mesothelioma. For the full story, go to http://money.cnn.comAnd here is the rest of it. ...

Pleural Mesothelioma: A Quick Look
2008-02-08 22:03:00
Pleural mesothelioma is one of several types of cancer linked to asbestos exposure. It is caused by asbestos fibers being ingested into the lungs and affects the pleural lining of the lungs. Pleural mesothelioma is a deadly and devastating disease with no known cure. There are a number of symptoms of pleural mesothelioma, and like other forms of mesothelioma, they can appear very non-specific and could be mistaken for a number of common diseases or illnesses. Shortness of breath, caused by pleural thickening which gradually contracts the breathing space, is often the first symptom of pleural mesothelioma. Cough, chest pain, difficulty swallowing, facial swelling, weight loss, fever, and rasping are some of the other symptoms of pleural mesothelioma. In many cases, however, individuals with the disease never experience symptoms at all until well after it has matured. It typically takes several decades for the symptoms of pleural mesothelioma to develop, and once diagnosed, patients typic ...

Mesothelioma: Treatments For Mesothelioma Cancer
2008-02-07 12:52:00
Mesothelioma cancer is currently treated through three treatments, depending on the cancer location, the disease stage, and the patient's general health and age. These treatments are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which sometimes are combined to fight the disease in so far as possible. In a surgery, one of the most common treatments for mesothelioma, the doctor removes part of the lining of the abdomen or the chest and some tissue around it. In a pneumonectomy, the doctor may also remove one lung when the patient has pleural mesothelioma or cancer of the pleura. In other surgical procedure, the doctor may also remove part of the diaphragm, the muscle below the lungs that helps with breathing.Through these procedures, the medical specialist shall try to excise tumourous tissue arising from this cancer disease. As these operations will reduce the patient's respiratory capacity, the surgeon will evaluate the patient's ability to function after a lung tissue removal, before ...

Mesothelioma: Mesothelioma Cancer Main Factors
2008-02-07 12:50:00
Mesothelioma cancer can strike anyone, but appears more often in men than in women. It is a disease mainly linked to asbestos and smoke, since most people who have worked on jobs where they breathed in asbestos particles, have developed this pathology.Experts believe that smoking does not seem to be a directly related risk for developing the disease only by its own, but its combination with asbestos exposure increases the risk of Mesothelioma, so stop smoking if you are exposed to asbestos in your workplace.According to statistics eight out of ten of all reported cases were exposed to asbestos, however there are cases of people that have not had any exposure to the fibers of this mineral. Therefore, the main risk factor for developing Mesothelioma can be found in asbestos, a group of fibrous metamorphic minerals which have an special resistance to fire. Asbestos have been exploited for a variety of purposes, such as industrial products, roof shingles and flooring products. However, some ...

Mesothelioma, a Cancer You Shouldn't Have Had to Deal With
2008-02-06 21:48:00
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos. This disease attacks the protective lining that covers most of the body's internal organs and in almost all cases is fatal, although new treatments for cancer are always underdevelopment giving us hope we may live cancer free sometime in the future. You can avoid mesothelioma by not exposing yourself to asbestos. Typically a worker was exposed to asbestos on their job. In the past asbestos was widely used in the large industrial manufacturing industry, the automotive industry and the heating and ventilating industry. Typical exposure is from inhaling asbestos dust a by product of manufacturing. When the worker goes home, their family experiences secondary exposure to the asbestos dust on their clothing. In residential construction during 1960's and 1970's, asbestos was commonly use to seal leaks and seams on heating ducts in residential houses and in other heating and ventilation systems. Lung Cancer, Mesothelioma and Asbestos
2008-02-06 11:29:00
Commonly, because lung cancer symptoms do not manifest in the early stage of the disease, treating it will be a big problem especially when detection happens when cancer metastases or secondary cancer cells already developed in the other organs of the body. Much research work has been dedicated to find out the first symptoms of lung cancer. Extensive research works conducted at Mesothelioma research clinics have uncovered some symptoms of lung cancer closely linked with the disease. The main three symptoms to lung cancer that should not be ignored are shortness of breath, pain when breathing or coughing, and existence of a persistent cough, especially if it is accompanied by expectoration of sputum streaked with blood. Additionally, loss of appetite, fatigue, unusual losses of weight are three symptoms, which are indicative of lung cancer. The website further deals with the symptoms that can indicate and help identify the formulation of the preliminary stages of the disease (though diff ...

MESOTHELIOMA CLINICAL TRIALS
2008-02-05 19:32:00
Clinical trials are studies of new drugs to test their effectiveness and safety on humans. There are Clinical trials in progress for drugs for a wide range of illnesses, including mesothelioma. There are benefits and pitfalls to participating in such trails and it is vital that you understand these beforehand. For example, you may need to travel further to be treated at a larger cancer center for even just your routine tests and treatments. However, you will be treated by the best doctors who are considered experts in their field, usually at the best facilities. You should also consider the risk that whilst the drug you are using may eventually be proved to be a wonder drug it could also be proved to be less effective than the current available treatments. The criteria for eligibility for clinical trials varies. There are some trials which require that you have had no treatment prior to starting and others that will only allow participation after other treatments have failed. Your docto ...

Mesothelioma Prognosis Facts
2008-02-05 14:13:00
Unfortunately, individuals suffering from mesothelioma (a form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure) have a rather poor prognosis. There is currently no cure for mesothelioma, and once the disease is discovered, patients usually only have a short time to live. Without treatment, mesothelioma is fatal within four to eight months. New forms of treatment are always being developed and tested, however, and there is evidence that the healthier a patient is at the time of diagnosis, the longer the life expectancy of the patient. There are cases where patients receiving treatment have lived for as long as five or even ten years, but this is very rare. Even under treatment, most people survive less than one year, and often only a few months after receiving their mesothelioma diagnosis. According to recent studies, around 10% of victims live at least three years after their diagnosis, and 5% reach five years. One of the reasons that the prognosis is so bad is that there is such a long period of ...

Veteran steamfitter for New York schools says he was demoted for blowing the whistle about asbestos problems
2008-02-04 22:00:00
A man who worked as a steamfitter for the New York City Department of Education for 22 years spent the last 15 years reporting on dangerous asbestos in New York schools. When his repeated complaints about loose asbestos in the schools did not receive a response, he collected some of the asbestos-containing material and sent it to a lab for testing. The tests confirmed that there was loose, friable asbestos in the school. Friable asbestos is dangerous because it consists of small pieces that can become airborne and be breathed in. He has now been reassigned to sweeping warehouse floors, and he believes it is retaliation for blowing the whistle about asbestos problems in New York schools. New York has sued and recovered money from asbestos manufacturers because of these problems, but apparently the money recovered will go into a general fund and will not be reserved for asbestos removal in the schools. This means that loose asbestos fibers will remain in the school and will continue to b ...

Mesothelioma: Legal Ramifications
2008-01-31 22:55:00
A Brief OverviewMesothelioma is a form of cancer that attacks the linings of the lungs and the intestinal tract, and also the sac covering the heart. It is also called epithelial mesothelioma, as it affects the membrane in the pleura, the pericardium and the peritoneum. It is not lung-cancer per se. The mesothelioma-lung cancer confusion has been there earlier. Mesothelioma is merely a form of cancer that affects the lining covering the lungs. It comes in three forms:? Pleural mesothelioma? Peritoneal mesothelioma? Pericardial mesotheliomaCauses of MesotheliomaThe primary cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos. This can be direct exposure at the work place, or secondary exposure (when the victim is exposed to asbestos through coming in contact with someone who has already been exposed to asbestos). Despite all the pain and the loss that the workers faced, there was some hope in the form of legal recourse. Workers started suing the plants they worked in, and soon the legal ...
