HPV Vaccine Kills 3 Girls
2007-06-16 14:23:00
Amid controversy over state legislatures requiring young girls to take Gardasil, Merck?s new vaccine for human papillomavirus (HPV), severe side effects are being reported. In all, 1,637 adverse reactions have been reported to the Food and Drug Administration, including three girls who died shortly after receiving the immunization. Meanwhile, 25 girls in Australia reported headache, nausea and dizziness after the vaccination, some so severe that they were hospitalized. These are steep risks for a vaccine that only sometimes protects against HPV, which is virtually 100 percent avoidable without a useless, expensive vaccine. And bear in mind: this year, some 11,000 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer, which can be caused by HPV, and about 3,700 will die from it. In comparison, 16 times more American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer (178,480), and 11 times more will die from it (40,460).An article by Tim Worstall dives deeper into the HPV controversy. As Merck's own liter ...
McDonald's Says it's Food is Nutritious for Children
2007-06-15 15:34:00
Six American moms will be going behind-the-scenes at McDonald?s restaurants, processing plants, orchards and test kitchens and sharing their experiences with the world via online journals.McDonald?s, of course, is banking on the fact that these moms, who were chosen from a pool of 4,000 applicants, will help give them a more family-friendly, ?mom-approved? reputation amid growing claims that fast-food giants are contributing to obesity and a host of other diet-related health problems across the country. In a 2006 phone and online survey, about 48 percent of women said they viewed McDonald?s food quality as ?excellent? or ?very good.? I feel that now that more people are investigating McDonald's, they are now quickly putting nutrition facts on their foods. An article written by David Kiley puts forth information regarding this business tactic. The company is trying to move this closer to the industry average of 68 percent, but what is shocking to me is that even that many women associat ...

5 Risks of Gastric Bypass Surgery
2007-06-15 08:26:00
People who undergo gastric bypass surgery may find themselves transferring one addiction for another. Many of these surgery patients are ending up drowned in debt from overspending, depressed from becoming an alcoholic or are finding their lives in disarray from any number of other self-sabotaging addictions.Gastric bypass surgery, which shrinks your stomach to the size of a walnut, makes it nearly impossible for former food ?addicts? to overeat, but it does nothing to address the underlying behavior that drives a person to do something, anything, to excess.?Transfer addictions? are now cropping up pervasively among the gastric bypass population as they search for something other than food -- drugs, alcohol, gambling, shopping and more -- to fill an emotional or physical void.An article written on the obesity topics blog goes into full detail what gastric bypass is and it's pros and cons. This surgery is clearly overlooking a major aspect of why people overeat in the first place -- emo ...
Beware of False Colgate
2007-06-14 18:35:00
The Colgate-Palmolive Co. said today that 5-ounce tubes of counterfeit toothpaste sold in discount stores in four states -- including Pennsylvania -- under a Colgate label are being recalled because they may contain a poisonous chemical. The article on the New York City injury board site tells why chinese toothpaste has been pulled from shelves and banned.A Food and Drug Administration official, Doug Arbesfeld, said yesterday that testing had found the chemical in a product with the Colgate label, but said in the initial announcement that the FDA was unsure whether it really was Colgate or a counterfeit."We are aware that toothpaste is something that's been counterfeited in the past," he said. "We don't want to alarm people unnecessarily."Antifreeze chemical: MS USA Trading, Inc. of North Bergen, N.J., the importer involved in the initial recall announcement, said the toothpaste may contain diethylene glycol, a chemical found in antifreeze. The company said the toothpaste, imported fr ...
Natural Treatment for Baldness
2007-06-10 07:54:00
Researchers are investigating the use of stem cells as a safer, more natural means to treat baldness.Scientists began looking into the possibility after removing patches of skin from mice and studying how the mice healed afterward.Over time, cells that hadn't originally been responsible for growing hair follicles began to express that very trait, as a result of genes located in stem cells that generate follicles during the development of mice. The hair growth happened naturally after their skins were wounded.Mice that were genetically engineered to produce higher quantities of the proteins that activate the genetic pathways that spur follicles grew twice as many hairs, after wounding, as would normally be found on untreated, unwounded mice.Stem cells for hair replacement would certainly seem a novel and relatively safe way to achieve hair growth, and it will be exciting to see how this develops. If you haven't lost your hair yet, but are simply worried about it, one of the best things ...
How to Maximize Your Brain Power
2007-06-09 20:25:00
Although it may be true you only use a fraction of your brain at any point in time, there's still plenty you can do to maximize your virtually unlimited brain power.Physical exercise is one obvious recommendation that never fails, but the Ririan Project lists another 33 simple, no-nonsense strategies to unleash your brain's capacity for learning. Some are classics like organizing your space for mental work, as cluttered surroundings lead to cluttered thoughts and reinforce the chaos. Or, always start by learning the basics, before moving on to more challenging aspects of your project. Other basic, but great, ideas include:1) You can try a powerful method known as aromatherapy. A great article has been written by the Smartkit website.2) Pay undivided attention to whatever it is you want to be able to recall later, as multi-tasking reduces the amount of information you will remember.3) Give yourself deadlines. Often you will find you can accomplish more in less time than you thought.4) ...
The Connection Between Weight Loss and Sleep
2007-06-09 16:58:00
There is a great article written on Families.com which goes deep into the connection between sleep deprivation and weight gain. It is a known fact that obesity is a major factor in sleep apnea, and is often listed as one of the main causes. Once a person becomes a victim of sleep apnea even more pounds pile on. Sleep apnea causes sleep deprivation which leads to less energy. Less exercise causes weight gain.A recent study conducted by researchers at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health and the Obesity Research Center, suggested a link between the risk of being obese and the number of hours of sleep each night. Other factors, such as physical activity, age and depression, to name a few, made no difference to the weight gain. It may all have to do with two hormones - leptin, a hormone that suppresses appetite, and Grehlin, a hormone that increases food intake and is thought to play a role in long-term regulation of body weight. Sleep deprivation lowers the levels of lep ...
Exercising for weight loss
2007-06-09 16:25:00
I have found a great article written on Matt's Blog which specifically targets exercising for weight loss. I would like to add a few points to his statement. First, you should understand the components of fitness before you get started. The following should be included in any fitness routine:1. Cardio Endurance - How well your heart and lungs work to supply your body with oxygen during your workout.Example: How well you're breathing after chasing your terrified dog around the yard before stuffing him into the tub for a bath.2. Muscular Endurance - How long you can hold a position or repeat a movement.Example: Carrying 8 bags of groceries, plus a tired child, up 3 flights of stairs and into the kitchen without dropping them.3. Muscular Strength - Your ability to lift the heaviest weight you can, one time.Example: The strength required to shove your spouse over in an attempt to stifle the chainsaw-like snoring.4. Flexibility - How limber you are.Example: You're ability to reach the t ...
How To Increase Brain Health
2007-06-07 05:15:00
Although physical exercise helps improve brain health, brain exercises are a great tool for developing or maintaining a mind like a steel-trap. Lumosity.com is a new site offering a complete brain fitness program. Designed by neuroscientists, their program has been scientifically demonstrated to improve your memory, attention and processing speed. The program consists of 30 sessions, each session consisting of three to five games, which automatically adapts to the difficulty best suited for your current abilities, getting more difficult as you go along. You can track your advancement and improvement as you go through the program.Users of the program claim they have experienced clearer and quicker thinking, better memory retention of names and numbers, increased alertness, elevated mood and better concentration while on task. For example, one game called Birdwatching is designed to improve your peripheral vision. This is an important ability in many everyday activities, such as driving, s ...

Prescription Drugs Found in Florida Sharks
2007-06-06 20:49:00
Sharks in one Florida river are getting a dose of human medicine, and now scientists want to know if it's a prescription for trouble.Scientists recently found traces of prescription antidepressants, cholesterol-lowering drugs and synthetic estrogens in the blood of young bull sharks in the Caloosahatchee River on Florida's southwest Gulf Coast. This summer, they'll study the issue more widely. On Friday, scientists with Mote Marine Laboratory fished for bull sharks as part of research to find out what drugs the sharks encounter most and whether the doses are large enough to alter how they behave and reproduce. The sharks come into contact with treated waste water which includes traces of the medications previously identified as the cholesterol-reducer Lipitor, various antidepressants such as Prozac and Zoloft, synthetic estrogens used in birth-control pills, and anti-inflammatory drugs such as Celexa. The Caloosahatchee receives treated wastewater from several sewer plants and passes b ...
Ron Paul's Health Freedom Protection Bill
2007-06-06 15:50:00
Short, pithy and to the point, it allows supplements to carry scientifically justified health claims. It shifts the burden of proof to the FDA to prove that health claims are NOT scientifically warranted, rather than assuming that health claims are forbidden as advertising unless they relates directly to either structure or function. Thus, "Cherries may be good for arthritis" would be permitted since there is strong scientific evidence that they help people with joint pain.FDA Restricting Your Right to Know What Supplements Can Do For YouThe FDA does not want you to know how good supplements are for you. If you understand how safe, effective and inexpensive they are, why would you take Big Pharma drugs? When I coined the term "Nutricide" I gave it two definitions:1. The death of a body of knowledge about the health benefits of foods, and,2. The death of large numbers of people through the manipulation of the food supply. The FDA is working on both the first (through tools like the recent ...

Ginseng Helps Cancer Patients with Fatigue
2007-06-05 05:07:00
Nelle Moriarty says she's grateful for new breast cancer drugs like Herceptin. But like most patients in cancer therapy, Moriarty, 55, says the medication often leaves her exhausted and struggling to concentrate. That's why Moriarty, a marriage-and-family therapist from Rochester, Minn., says she volunteered for a clinical trial about treating cancer-related fatigue in a new way: ginseng capsules.Ginseng has been used in Chinese medicine to promote health for 2,000 years. A National Cancer Institute survey in 2004 found that 36% of adults use ginseng or some other form of complementary or alternative medicine. But scientists have never before studied ginseng's potential to ease cancer fatigue in such a carefully controlled way, says lead author Debra Barton of the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.Barton's research is one of a trio of studies, all financed by the cancer institute, on complementary and alternative cancer medicines presented Sunday at the American Society of Clinical Oncology ...

14 Ways to Improve Your Exercise Routine
2007-06-04 19:49:00
1) Start slow. The biggest mistake that people make when starting an exercise plan is starting too fast or too hard. Trust me, I?ve done it many times. I?ve learned to take it easy, start as small as possible, and worry about endurance or intensity later. The key in the beginning is to make it enjoyable and accomplishable. That?s probably not a word, but it should be. And it is now. Zen Habits are ones that are accomplishable.2) Increase but gradually. After getting used to a certain level of exercise, you?ll want to increase it. Don?t just run two miles or walk 20 minutes three times a week for a year. Your body adjusts to the stress you?re giving it, so you need to increase the level once you?ve adjusted. But do it gradually, and only every two weeks or so.3) Crank it up. Once you?ve gotten used to exercise, you?ll want to do some higher intensity ones for better fitness and fat-burning. For example, instead of running slowly and steadily, for a long time, try doing shorter bursts of ...
5 Reasons to Avoid Food From Wal-Mart
2007-05-31 05:17:00
China has morphed?seemingly overnight?into a dangerous juggernaut run amok into kitchens across America. They?ve jumped onboard the organic food train, and are seizing the opportunity to expand their already massive exports market by adding fresh produce. The real price for cheap strawberries year-round, however, may end up being your health.Just consider this: in the first three months of this year, imports of fresh fruit from China grew by 279 percent and fresh vegetables by 66 percent. This kind of explosive growth of imported fresh produce from, literally, the other end of the earth, has the potential for some pretty dire health ramifications.Wal-Mart is the nation?s largest food retailer. They are also China?s eighth-largest trading partner. Unfortunately, Wal-Mart does not appear to have your best interest at heart, as they spearhead the campaign against stricter food regulations, port inspections and country of origin labeling.China is now almost as known for its toxic food ingr ...
Ron Paul Prevents FDA From Spilling More Blood
2007-05-30 21:01:00
Congressman Ron Paul (R-Texas) says, ?enough is enough,? to the Big Pharma Bullies running the FDA. He has introduced bill H.R. 2117 (the Health Freedom Protection Act) into the House of Representatives, which would effectively stop the FDA from censoring truthful claims about the health benefits of dietary supplements. He wants to put an end to the federal bureaucrats? meddling with your right to choose healthy alternatives over harmful and deadly patent drugs, and believes Americans should not be prevented form learning about simple ways to improve their health. This bill puts the burden of proof on the FDA/FTC when it comes to proving that a label or advertisement is false and misleading. As it stands now, the manufacturer has to satisfy an unobtainable standard of proof?as was the case with the American cherry growers a few years ago. The FDA went on a witch-hunt after the growers used evidence from studies funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, to state that cherries have ant ...
