Does stating what you "have" make you feel better?
2007-09-11 05:39:00
When I check the Fibromyalgia message boards, it's very easy to notice a pattern. That pattern goes something like this: "Hello, I'm new here. I have fibromyalgia, depression, TMJ, herniated disks, insomnia, and PTSD." Two immediate questions come to my mind. Are you what you "have"? Does stating what you "have" make you feel better? For me, I work to feel well. I work to take ownership of things only if I can find reasons to appreciate them! Instead of saying I have a huge mortgage, I say things like "I pay the bills and I want to continue to create a home sanctuary for my family." Instead of saying I "have" fibromyalgia, maybe say, "my whole body aches today and I want to feel better." By noticing that achiness, and wanting to feel better, and putting that thought energy out into the universe, you have already taken a step towards wellness! Your wanting to feel better is good, especially if you believe in the law of attraction, which has been proven to exist by scientific research. ...

Mental Fitness
2007-09-09 08:52:00
Do you remember when the importance of exercise and nutrition were hardly considered by the health profession? Now those two factors are almost always covered by any good physician offering advice to his or her patients. I believe the parallel today is in the area of mental fitness. Visualization is rarely discussed by the medical profession, but one day we will have health centers that remind us of the Star Trek holodeck. In the meantime, the closest thing we have to virtual reality is our own skills at creative visualization. It is said that the average person thinks a minimum of 1000 thoughts per hour. Even if we are a naturally upbeat and positive person, and think positive thoughts 75 % of the time, that still equates to well over 3000 negative thoughts in a waking day. (Another question is what are our thoughts while sleeping?) Now let's take a person with a chronic health condition, like, say, fibromyalgia, a person who experiences physical pain much of his/her waking moments, a ...

Cultivate Mindfulness
2007-09-08 17:02:00
Fibromyalgia Research Study ResultsHere's the study: 58 female patients with fibromyalgia (mean age 52 ± 8 years) For 8 weeks, some underwent mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and some used active social support groups (the control intervention). Pre- to post intervention analyses over a 3 year period indicated MBSR provided significantly greater benefits than the control intervention in the areas of coping with pain, anxiety, depression, quality of life, and somatic complaints. Three-year follow-up analyses of MBSR participants indicated sustained benefits for these same measures. This study was published in the Journal of Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics. So what does this mean for you and a diagnosis of fibromyalgia? MBSR was developed to help those with medical illness adapt and live their best lives. (Hey, that's what I blog about!) The program provides systematic training in mindfulness meditation as a self-regulatory approach to stress reduction and emotion management ...

Are you thinking consciously?
2007-09-07 19:45:00
WORDS OF WISDOM Thanks to Oprah and others, many of us have now been exposed to "The Law of Attraction." The best teachers I've had for learning these techniques are a group known as Abraham. See this post for an explanation of who they are. Here are a few more of my favorite Abraham quotes:You don't create things that you want. You create things that yougive your attention to, whether you want them or not. Los Angeles 4/1/07So what you are wanting to do, is to spend more of your time baskingin the memory of a perfectly functioning body. Not tensing against thebody that's not working quite so well but spend more time remembering, more time regurgitating more time finding that place of Pure PositiveEnergy, and your body will realign itself. It is certain. 3-16-94Complaining about anything, holds you in the place of refusing toreceive the things you've been asking for. Justifying about anythingholds you in the place of refusing to let in the very things thatyou've been asking for. Bl ...

Fibromyalgia with Depression
2007-09-04 15:13:00
The Chemistry of Joy, a masterful book on healing depressionExcerpted from chapter 1:Even responsible, caring physicians — psychiatrists as well as general practitioners — are unaware that depression requires a "brain-healthy" diet and lifestyle to mirror the "heart-healthy" regime that we've come to know so well. Even well-meaning psychiatrists tend to see depressed patients as brain chemistry gone awry rather than as a complex integration of mind, body, and spirit. And many patients who try to eat well, exercise frequently, and live a healthy life remain ignorant of the specific diet and lifestyle choices that might cure their insomnia, lift their moods, soothe their anxiety, and generally ease their depression.Depression is a holistic illness that affects every aspect of who we are as human beings. It only makes sense to address it from every available angle, both with regard to our bodies and brain chemistry and vis-à-vis our psyches and spirits. So in this book, I offer you ...
