Can Humans Live to 1,000? Some Experts Claim We Can
2007-09-12 07:00:13
Cambridge University geneticist Aubrey de Grey has famously stated, “The first person to live to be 1,000 years old is certainly alive today …whether they realize it or not, barring accidents and suicide, most people now 40 years or younger can expect to live for centuries.”
not everyone thinks ageing can or should be cured. Some say that humans weren’t meant to live forever, regardless of whether or not we actually can.
“I just don’t think [immortality] is possible,” says Sherwin Nuland, a professor of surgery at the Yale School of Medicine. “Aubrey and the others who talk of greatly extending lifespan are oversimplifying the science and just don’t understand the magnitude of the task. His plan will not succeed. Were it to do so, it would undermine what it means to be human.”
It’s interesting that Nuland first says he doesn’t think it will work but then adds that if it does, it will undermine humanity. So, which is it? Is it impossible, or are the skept ...

What Would It Be Like If All Humans Vanished?
2007-09-11 10:36:52
Without us on the earth, what traces of us would linger? What would disappear?
If all human beings vanished, Cities would eventually revert to a forested island. Many skyscrapers would topple within decades, undermined by waterlogged foundations; stone buildings such as St. Patrick’s Cathedral (at right in artist’s rendering) would survive longer. Weeds and colonizing trees would take root in the cracked pavement, while raptors nested in the ruins and foxes roamed the streets…
2 days after hunman disappear
Without pumping,New York’s sunways would impassably flood. The emergency fuel supply to diesel generators that circulate cooling water to nuclear reactors cores would run out.
1-4 years
Worldwide,a billion annually doomed birds would live when radio and communication tower warning lights cease blinking and high tension wires grow cold.Animals would begin to return to the sites of nuclear eactors, which would have all melted down or burned.Human head- and body-lice would gr ...

Heart to heart
2007-09-09 07:58:47
A transplant patient had an emotional reunion with her heart when she came face to face with the organ that nearly killed her – in a museum.
Jennifer, from Ringwood, Hampshire, had the life-saving operation three months ago at Papworth Hospital, Cambridge.
According to the Mirror she said: “It was an emotional and surreal experience. It caused me so much pain and turmoil inside me. I was really curious to see it but at the same time I am trying to love the heart I have now.”
Jennifer, 23, was diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy when she was a teenager. It made her breathless after a short walk and had started to affect her liver.
Jennifer’s old heart is displayed at the Wellcome Collection public venue in Central London.

It may be green and leafy, but spinach is also the ultimate man food. Aim for 1 cup fresh spinach or 1/2 cup cooked per day.
2?Yogurt
Cancer fighter, Bone builder, Boosts immunity
Various cultures claim yogurt as their own creation, but the 2,000-year-old food’s health benefits are not disputed: Fermentation spawns hundreds of millions of probiotic organisms that serve as reinforcements to the battalions of beneficial bacteria in your body, which boost the immune system and provide protection against cancer. Not all yogurts are probiotic though, so make sure the label says “live and activ ...

Nearly 7,000 Couples set a new World Record for simultaneous Kissing
2007-09-04 06:57:08
Nearly 7,000 couples smooched for ten seconds in the Bosian town of Tuzla, setting a new world record for simultaneous kissing.
With fireworks, a giant TV screen, confetti and heart-shaped red balloons as the backdrop, the crowd kissed for at least ten seconds at 1100 p.m. local time (0900 p.m. GMT).
A total of 6980 couples kissed for 10 seconds at the main square of the northeastern town of Tuzla, some 120 kilometres north of the capital, Sarajevo, said local radio station Kameleon, which organised the event.
The Philippines and Hungary are know for their rivalry for the kissing crown. The Asian country set the Guinness world record in February 2004 with 5,327 couples, but were overtaken by Hungary with 5,875 couples in 2005. The Philippines came back in February this year, with 6,124 couples in Manila to regain the record — but Hungary responded again in June, when it produced 6,613 smooching couples. In August Hungary claimed the new record with 7,451 kissing couples, but acc ...

4 Things that could help reduce risk of Prostate Cancer
2007-09-03 03:28:52
Nutrients in red wine helps reduce risk of prostate cancer
Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) came to the conclusion after a study of male mice that were fed a plant compound found in red wine called resveratrol. The findings were published Saturday in the online edition of Carcinogenesis. (Source: China)
The nutrients in red wine have shown anti-oxidant and anti-cancer properties. Other sources of resveratrol in the diet include grapes, raspberries, peanuts and blueberries.
In the study resveratrol-fed mice showed an 87 percent reduction in their risk of developing prostate tumors that contained the worst kind of cancer-staging diagnosis. The mice that proved to have the highest cancer-protection effect earned it after seven months of consuming resveratrol in a powdered formula mixed with their food.
Other mice in the study, those fed resveratrol but still developed a less-serious form of prostate cancer, were 48 percent more likely to have ...
