Country and Western lunch in Kingfisher
2007-09-26 10:47:53
Kick up your heels boys and girls and hear the Country & Western music. Kingfisher in de Pijp area of Amsterdam seems to want to breathe the atmosphere of the old fifties diners in the States. And although the bar with the red fridges give a cadillac type feel and the fact that it seems obligatory for women to wear cowboy boots here, it kind of misses the mark, because the rest of the decor doesn’t match. Even more funny was the group of Japanse gothics that were sitting at the back of the place when we came in.
Since all tables were taken, we took a seat in what seemed to be the waiting area of the place. Maybe it was not meant that way, but the bench with low tables made me feel like in the dentist’s waiting room. We took some menus and two minutes later there was already someone asking for our order. Since we hadn’t made up our minds yet, he said he would come back later. A few minutes later a table open up, so we moved our asses to the table.
Not much later an ...

Vegetarian dinner at Golden Temple
2007-09-09 06:52:36
Saturday evening and looking for a place to eat. After feeling like Josef and Mary, being turned down at restaurants because you have no reservation, we stumbled across The Golden Temple at the end of the Utrechtsestraat. Now from the outside it looked rather quiet, but inside it was full of reservation signs on the free tables. Luckily there was also an upstairs, so we could sit there.
Now this place is rather unique, it’s vegetarian and owned by yogis I think, because the second floor didn’t have chairs. It was very Japanese with low tables and cushions to sit on. We were to first ones up there, so we had our pick of the tables.
A little later the waiter came with the menus and a small drink on the house. It was their specialty, some kind of ice tea with ginger. It had quite an interesting flavor.
After a little while more a waitress came to take our order. The menu is all vegetarian and has some Italian and Mexican style things on it, next to some Indian dishes. I decide ...

Lunch on the terrace of Flamingo
2007-09-08 06:35:02
Today was a typical end of summer day in Amsterdam. Warm when the sun shines and needing a coat when the clouds come. And in Holland there are a lot of clouds! We decided today to go out of the center and go to the adjacent De Pijp area. Walking down the Albert Cuyp market there, half way we got fed up and spotted a new thing where Ralph’s Asian Wonderfood used to be. Now we had been to Ralph’s one time and the only wonderful thing about the food was the lack of flavor. So time to try the new place.
The place was called Flamingo and although with that name you would think they would put a fake plastic flamingo somewhere, I couldn’t spot it. We took a place at the terrace though, so it could have been hiding inside. Flamingo is located on one of the busiest places in De Pijp making it a nice place to sit and watch all the people go by. I was peckish, so I took a look at the lunch menu. Many standard type sandwiches on it, but the ox sausage with mustard and pickles sou ...

Coffee break at Bagels & Wraps
2007-09-02 06:24:47
Today before going with my friend to the food fair at the Haarlemmerdijk, there was some time for a quick coffee at the Bagels & Wraps just off Leidseplein. Bagels & Wraps is on a corner very close to the MacBike store and behind Wagamama, so you can easily miss it. It’s not so big, but very cosy. There is a big counter and some tables and some products on display you can buy.
After we sat down and looked at the big menu on the wall, I was surprised that a girl came to our table to give us some menus. Most of the time in small places like this you have to order at the counter. We had already made our decision from the menu on the wall, so I asked the girl to bring us two lattes and a chocolate chip cookie. Although all the bagels and the wraps on the menu also looked quite nice, I didn’t have space to try them. I did see someone take one of the wraps though and it seemed quite small for the asking price, so better take a bagel when you come with a big appetite
The ...
