Is Career Sea Pay Worth It?
2007-07-06 15:44:00
This is more for Navy. I'm in the Air Force and can not fathom what it would be like to be on a ship for one year or more. The Air Force has a program called Career Sea Pay for all members in the military that pays money for one or more years on ship and it proportionally increases equal to the length of cumulative time out on sea. My question is, Is Career Sea Pay a strong enough incentive to ...

Value Investing
2007-07-05 15:54:00
Value investing is one of the best ways to invest. Value investing is when you buy stocks for cheaper then they are worth and then sell them when they go up in value. Value investing is the model that Peter Lynch and Warren Buffett use to invest. They are able to find the true value of companies (intrinsic value) and they buy them and wait. This is the essense of long-term investing.
How can a ...

TSP Ticker Symbols
2007-07-01 12:32:00
I get a lot of hits from my site for people looking for the TSP ticker symbols. People would like to use the ticker symbol and go to Yahoo! Finance like they would a mutual fund. But remember, there are NO TSP ticker symbols. The TSP DOES NOT have ticker symbols because they are not publicly traded. Here is the jargon straight from the TSP website.
"The TSP Funds do not have ticker symbols. Here ...

Losing the 3.5% raise...
2007-06-30 10:47:00
A new report on Friday released by the the Congressional Budget Office said that there is not a pay difference between the civilian sector and the military. In fact, the report says that because of our pension, we actually get paid more than the civilian sector. This might dramatically affect the possibility of the 3.5% pay raise this January.
The major source of disparity comes from the value ...

Military Retirement - About to Retire or Some Things to Think About
2007-06-27 20:18:00
Whether you are retiring now or still have 20 years, you need to start researching retirement now. I suggest going to New Retirement. The first page has a calculator and can only be used if your birth date is before 1977. I didn't really use the calculator because I was born in 1981.
The best part of the site is the Retirement 101 section. The university of 101 sections of any site is usually ...

My First Carnival Submission
2007-06-27 09:24:00
I have read about blog carnivals a lot; however, I never really participated in them. I submitted my first blog carnival submission to the Festival of Frugality #80. It was hosted by Money for the Rest of Us. ...

College Expenses and Having Kids Early
2007-06-25 18:09:00
I'm a young father, only being 25 and having a seven year old and an eight month old. Albeit, the seven year old is a step-child. I have full care and responsibility of my step-son however. People feel that this is a financial mistake. Since people tend to make more as they get older, they feel that a child will have less burden on their disposable income as they get older. This is a true fact in ...

Extreme Saver - Socks Edition
2007-06-24 11:25:00
So, I've been known to go to extremes when saving money. I'm in the Air Force so it's already assumed that I don't make any real money. I must reduce my expenses to increase my bottom line. Remember the only REAL equation you need is: Income - Expenses = Bottom Line. I try to reduce my expenses as far down as they can reasonably go.
One EXTREME way I save money is to handle my socks effectively. ...

Blackstone IPO - I Joined the Sheep
2007-06-22 12:00:00
So I bought $3,000 worth of Blackstone (BX) today at $36.45. I was really hoping for a 90% or more surge like BX's smaller rival Fortress. I'm going to keep this for a short time. I'm hoping to play the popularity of this stock and then sell. Private Equity is the new black right now. Private Equity basically means companies that deal invest other people's money in large amounts. They are called ...

United Concordia - CONUS Dental Coverage
2007-06-19 11:18:00
So I've been stationed in the states for about five months now. I'm about to enroll my family into United Concordia. First, I didn't know that we had to pay for dental coverage. Beale AFB doesn't have a Major Treatment Facility so we have to use off-base dental. I checked the cost shares of United Concordia and I'm not happy about state-side dental coverage. Everything except, diagnostic, ...

The Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) L Fund - The Lifecycle Fund
2007-06-16 19:15:00
There are five funds currently offered in the TSP. When you start up, you can put however much money you want in the fund that you want. But what if you don't know what fund you want. The TSP offers a fund called the "L" fund or the lifecycle fund. This fund automatically adjusts the holdings as you get closer to the retirement date. I've posted about this fund several times; however, I just ...

Financial Web a Great Place to Learn
2007-06-13 19:10:00
You can find information all over the Web. As a matter of fact, nothing has done more for the dissemination of data than the Internet. But much of the info you come across just isn't any good. Either it has a slant to it, or someone's trying to sell you something. And financial information, which all of us need in some form or another, can be spread all over kingdom come.
One good place that ...

Military Retirement - Retire Early in the Military
2007-06-12 15:02:00
I get a lot of Google searches for "Military Millionaires" or "Military Retirement" so I decided to go on CNN and look for some articles that I can share. Here is a short one that I found.

Hits4Pay Payout Halfway Point
2007-06-09 10:38:00
I started using Hits4pay stay at home opportunity. It's one of those "read emails and get paid" businesses. Just like most of these, the payout is very small. When you first sign-up you get $10 and the minimum payout is $25. The categories I chose only give me two-to-six e-mails, Monday through Friday. It's only .02 per e-mail. I've referred two people already but I think they've stopped. You get ...

A Little About Debt
2007-06-07 14:52:00
A lot of people tell me that I spend too much time thinking about money. They also say money can’t buy happiness. I disagree; however, I can understand how people feel towards money. Not having money (meaning in debt) can buy you unhappiness. Debt can cause self-esteem problems and marital problems. An article from The Thrifty Scot explains what I mean.
The debt help industry is very large ...
