Arbitraging Small vs. Large Cap Volatility
2007-07-31 08:07:26
In recent days, the RVX (Russell 2000 volatility index) continues to track the VIX (S&P 500 volatility) and VXO very closely, but this shouldn't be happening given the recent out-performance of large cap equities relative to small caps. As RUT got plowed last week versus SPX and OEX, we should've seen the gap narrow between the RVX and the VIX/VXO in absolute terms, but we didn't... ...

Arbys parent may bid for Wendys
2007-07-30 18:16:58
Billionaire investor and major Wendy's shareholder Nelson Peltz said that his restaurant company, Triarc Cos., would be prepared to offer between $37 and $41 a share for the struggling hamburger chain, roughly a 10% to 22% premium to Wendy's closing price of $33.69. But Peltz said if Wendy's did not agree to a confidentiality agreement that he proposed by the end of the day Wednesday, Triarc would consider other alternatives. In a letter to Wendy's Chairman James Pickett disclosed in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commis ...

Stocks Close Higher After Pullback
2007-07-30 16:01:29
Wall Street found a foothold Monday as investors, still anxious that a credit crunch could crimp U.S. growth, took advantage of low prices after last week's steep losses. The Dow Jones industrial average surged more than 90 points. Some solid earnings and takeover activity boosted the stock market, which is coming off the Dow's and the Standard & Poor's 500 index's biggest weekly drops in nearly five years. The Dow is down about 4.8 percent from its July 19 record close of 14,000.41, having caved under worries about a shakier lending cl ...
ADM, Tyson produce in spite of corn prices
2007-07-30 12:05:37
ADM, the largest US ethanol producer, said its net quarter profit more than doubled to $955m, $1.47 a share, from $410m or 62 cents per share in the year-earlier period, primarily due to a $616 after-tax gain in asset sales. Analysts were expecting 59 cents a share, according to Reuters Estimates. ADM said higher corn costs and lower ethanol sales led to a $45m dip in its corn business's operating profit, down 15.7% to $241m from $286m in the same period last year. In the three months to June, Tyson foods generated a net profit of $111 ...
10 Stocks for Kid Investors
2007-07-30 10:09:13
I just read this article over on Lloyd's Investment Blog. One of his readers, a kid, asked what stocks he should buy because he has $8,000 to invest. First, I wish I was that kid and had $8,000 to invest when I was younger. But that is besides the point. I think Lloyd has some great ideas. While I personally wouldn't invest in all of them, I do think they are a great starting point, especially for a kid. You need to look at stocks that you have some interest in, you know what they are about and can relate to them. I think Lloyd brought those ...
Second Quarter Earnings Heatmap
2007-07-30 09:49:23
The guys at Bespoke has another great article for us. That have broken down Second Quarter earnings into two heat maps. The first highlights companies in the S&P 500 that have beaten, missed or reported inline earnings per share this quarter, and the second shows how well they did on the first trading day after their earnings report. It looks like even the stocks that beat estimates were beaten down. This gives us an opportunity to get in while the stocks are cheap. Check out the article and the heat maps. ...

Vasco Data Securities Impressive Results
2007-07-27 20:39:51
That was a beautiful thing... up almost 13% on a down 300 day means there are good things to come. Added 631 new customers 113 of those banks during the past quarter is a very good sign of continued growth as well. "VASCO said banks and financial institutions represented the biggest chunk of second-quarter revenues, with the majority outside the U.S. Europe accounted for 65 percent of revenues, Asia 16 percent, the U.S. 8 percent and other countries 14 percent." ...
Google says acquisitions evidence of healthy Web ad market
2007-07-27 11:58:06
Google Inc., which is facing an antitrust inquiry into its purchase of online advertising company DoubleClick Inc., on Friday pointed to a string of related acquisitions by competitors as evidence of what it sees as a healthy market that doesn't require government intervention. Google policy counsel Pablo Chavez said in a blog post that acquisitions such as Microsoft Corp.'s purchase of AdECN Inc., announced Thursday, mean "that the leading Internet companies believe that they can position themselves to succeed in the online advertising spa ...
