Style Spotlight!: Bohemian Soul
2007-08-02 17:02:00
I had the pleasure of interviewing Brooklyn stylist Deitra Wiche of Bohemian Soul. Bohemian Soul is a vintage-inspired line that is well-known for its crocheted pieces. She specializes in one-of-a-kind hand crochet accessories with a funky, retro edge. Her passion for color and texture are used in her vintage-inspired designs. With all the fabulousness Bohemian Soul entails, it was only right that I feature her designs right here on Spotlight On Style! How did you get into fashion design? I started out designing hair accessories for natural hair. People really liked them, so I started selling them at the salon I worked at.Did you have to train or apprentice with another designer? If so, how was that?I'm a self-taught accessory designer with tips and support from family and friends inspired by the many crocheted artists in Brooklyn. What inspired you to get into fashion design? I'm inspired by the 60's and 70's Fashion era. What inspires your designs? I love to experiment with funky, ...
The Look Book: Tracee Ellis Ross
2007-07-31 14:38:00
Because I enjoy highlighting true style icons on Spotlight On Style! Who better to feature in "The Look Book" series, than the fabulous Ms. Ross? Always a trendsetter, Tracee stays ahead of the mark with fresh and flirty styles. {Click the bottom righthand corner to view the book} Tracee Ellis Ross has an impeccable fashion sense. With a mother like Diana, it's no doubt that Tracee has been around glitz and glamour all of her life and it shows in her clothing choices. Her style is ultra-feminine -- flowing lines, puffed shoulders, and sky-high heels. My favorite aspect of Tracee's style is how she combines colors. I may not have the budget to dress like Tracee, but I'm definitely inspired.Stay tuned for a "Style Inspiration" feature on Ms. Ross. Also, who is your style icon? Whose style do you think is worthy of being featured in "The Look Book?" Be the first to comment with your answers and your pick could be featured next. ...
Makeover Mondays: Persia White Edition
2007-07-30 17:37:00
Don't get me wrong... the color choice is a step up from her usual basic black ensembles, but the fit and proportions are all wrong. With this makeover, I figured that a little color and a good fit would be perfect for her.1. Since she is an Autumn (warm tone complexion), she'd look best in rich, golden colors. 2. Because Persia has a pear shape, her figure would look best in a boot cut, or wide legged jean paired with a cami and a trendy blazer; which will ultimately promote a balanced look.3. Since her hips are very wide, I'd choose tops with puffed or fluted sleeves that will widen her shoulders and balance her figure. 4. Because she never really wears any color, a few key pieces in muted and rich warm colors, such as camel, beige, olive, orange, gold, dark brown, and grey would look marvelous on her and they'd really liven up her wardrobe. If your shape resembles Persia's (i.e. "the pear shape"), then some great clothing options to consider include: wide leg trousers, wide neck ...

Top Earning Model: Liya Kebede
2007-07-25 13:35:00
Forbes Magazine composed a list of the “Top Earning Models in the World” according to estimated earnings over the past 12 months. Ranking at #11 is 29-year-old Ethiopian beauty, Liya Kebede, with a whopping $2.5 million earned. A ground-breaker best known as the first black model in Estée Lauder’s history, Ms. Kebede, though not as high-profile as her counterparts, has maintained a successful career appearing in campaigns for brands as diverse as H&M, the Gap, Anne Taylor and Givenchy."Top models like those on our list still bank millions, but only once a multiyear contract is secured. The days of $10,000 runway fees are over. Top models don’t even do runway. It’s considered an internship process for the hundreds of anonymous 15- and 16-year-old foreign girls who swarm the runways of New York, Paris and Milan each season. They do 70 shows in six weeks and are paid about $250 an hour their first season.A good hardworking model can make $200,000 a season. But chances are that ...

Makeover Mondays: Schatar Edition
2007-07-23 18:33:00
Oh, Schatar! I don't even know where to begin...1. I'd give her a more dated hairstyle that she can maintain easily because this weave has had it! Also, the dirty blonde hue needs to go, I'm seriously thinking she should go red. 2. I'd choose tops for her that have supportive straps to support and lift her large bust. 3. I'd select makeup in neutral tones that keep her looking fresh and not overdone. I'd also update her cosmetic bag with fun yet subdued colors of the moment.4. I'd give her a more flattering pair of shoes that fit because these are obviously too small. So, how would you all make over Schatar? ...

"I want a girl with extensions in her hair; bamboo earrings, at least two pair." - raps LL Cool J in his hit "Round the way girl." Above: Kelis at Olympus Fashion Week Fall 2006 in New York on February 2, 2006.Above: Meagan at the 2007 MTV Movie Awards on June 3, 2007.Above: Rihanna on the set of TRL on June 11, 2007Well LL, I'm not too sure about the "extension" part, but I guess one out of two ain't bad. ;) Lately, all sorts of girls have been stocking up on these big, bold earrings. "It's sort of an '80s throwback and attitude," says stylist Mariel Haenn who buys these fabulous earrings for her client Rihanna. "The hoops can be paired with a dress (for "a little more edge") or with plain old jeans and a T-shirt. Who shouldn't try the trend? "Anyone who doesn't have enough attitude to carry it," says Haenn. And, I must say that I agree. You have to have a great deal of confidence to be able to rock this bold accessory. Click here to shop at Jackie Nicole to purchase a few fabul ...
