Heather Rama Turns Cast Off Vintage Into Modern Masterpieces
2008-02-01 17:41:12
Heather Rama learned to sew against her will. “My mom taught me to sew in 7th grade because I was going to fail home ec. She spent a very frustrating evening teaching me how to sew.” Out of failure springs success. High school brought about an interest in vintage. “I liked vintage clothing because it was made so differently from modern throw away clothes and it was so unique. Vintage was still relatively cheap then, so I would buy it and redesign it or cut it up and use the fabric.”
After years of refashioning vintage into modern for herself, and armed with a BFA in theatre and costume design, Heather began to sell her creations.
“These pieces are from a line I did in the fall, inspired by turn of the century French women’s wear. It was a perfect theme for fall, with all the layers and colors involved. I was really lucky to have gathered enough vintage fabric and patterns to make that line entirely from scratch, without reworking any actual piec ...

Gazebo Textiles Offers Wearable Art
2008-01-29 13:03:17
Gazebo Textiles is a true indie fashion house, run by artist Ricki Lee Moler out of her actual Pennsylvania home. A life of creativity has lead her to creating cut and sewn apparel, each piece being individually hand painted for a truly one-of-a-kind creation. Hand painting fabrics is just what it sounds like. Instead of dying fabrics in huge batches, each piece has special paint or dye applied by hand.
The titular gazebo is real - it is where Ricki learned her fabric painting techniques.
Ricki loves to do custom orders! To view more pieces, or contact her regarding a custom piece, visit her website at GazeboTextiles.com

Spork Fashion Loves Smashing Darling
2008-01-23 13:58:26
In case you haven’t noticed, Spork Fashion loves Smashing Darling. Run by Trish Ginter and Julie Rorrer, they appreciate indie fashion so much, they have turned it into a career. Here, Trish tells us the secrets to their success.
How did Smashing Darling start?
Now there’s a story … for anyone who wants the long version, we got it all down in the About Us section on SmashingDarling.com. The short version is that in the process of starting a new business designing and manufacturing baby bibs (big, bad baby bibs, to be exact) we decided instead to devote our efforts towards a site to benefit the indie design community as a whole. SmashingDarling.com has arisen from that initial collaboration, its main purpose being to help the indie fashion community get their new designs out there, without the huge undertaking of having to design their own e-commerce site.
What is your background?
I (Trish), have always marched to the beat of my own drum. I earned a BFA from the Fash ...

Jib & Genoa Brings Whimsy to Bracelets
2008-01-15 14:50:48
Jib & Genoa has a unique take on bracelets. Make them big, but make them feather-light. Like all of their pieces, gold and silver are presented nearly flat, with intricate designs carved out of them. I love the whimsy of the Bubble bracelet. It’s a little tough to get on and off - it can be stretched open and closed, but I am too paranoid to open it much. The work is worth it. But my favorite is the Orchid bracelet. This unique piece features an orchid “faceplate” but instead of being metal all the way around, it laces through with silk ribbon and ties in a bow. The perfect balance between hard and soft.

Jewelry Makes Learning Fun
2008-01-14 17:55:16
This weekend, Mr. Spork and I went to the Griffith Observatory, one of the biggest, most technologically advanced public observatories in the world. I may be a fashionista, but I am also a little bit of a science nerd (just a tiny bit). So I was enjoying my time there from a purely educational standpoint. We walked down one hallway and I was confronted with an orgy of celestial costume jewelry. “The sparkling ribbon of time,” starting with the Big Bang, was illustrated by nearly 2,200 earrings, brooches, hairpins, necklaces, and rings donated by Kara Knack, friend of the Observatory. If science class was this interesting in high school, I would have aced it for sure.

Post-Punk Preppy
2008-01-08 14:37:38
I have been called a lot of things, but preppy has never been one of them. I’ve never worn a polo shirt; never had a sweater tossed jauntily around my shoulders. But Attus Apparel’s polos are different. You won’t find a crocodile stitched over the breast. Instead, Attus Apparel stitches each of their polos with emblems that speak to their target 20-something audience: the finger, a skateboarder, a 40 of beer. Along with their rugged, destroyed edges, no one will mistake you for a prep.
These shirts are made for men, but with their slim fit, I like them too. My favorite is the Sid style, with a mohawked profile stitched over the breast. Vicious indeed. Speaking of vicious, keep your eyes peeled for new stock of Attus’s Shot Up Shirts, a very limited line of polos that have been shot through by various firearms. Shot Up Shirts tell a much better story than those jeans you paid extra for to get them pre-ripped.

Sock Monkey Madness!
2008-01-04 17:39:53
I love monkeys. A while back, a knitted a sock monkey hat. When I saw a friend of mine had a pair of sock monkey slippers, I had to have a pair! I am normally not one to run out and buy the same stuff my friends are wearing, but c’mon, how cute are these? And for $12.99 (made by Nick & Nora), you can’t go wrong.
Now I just have to prevent my puppy from thinking they are toys…

She Beads: Unique Jewelry, Unique Process
2008-01-03 13:50:47
She Beads might not exist today if it hadn’t been for Michael Jordan. Yup, the Michael Jordan. While She Beads designer Sandy Rueve was working as an X-ray tech for the Chicago Bulls, Jordan spotted her stringing beads in the locker room and asked for his own set. Sandy wasn’t making her own beads at the time, but was motivated to do so, and thus She Beads was born.
She Beads are hand-rolled clay beads incorporating a technique called caning. Sheets, wedges, and rods of clay are rolled together into long “canes”. When sliced, the cross section shows an intricate design of flowers, animal prints, geometrics, and more. The beads are baked and strung together. These sturdy pieces can withstand heat and cold; sand and surf. Finally jewelry that you can wear in the wilderness (not like I ever go out into the wilderness, but it’s good to know).
Giving back to the community is important to She Beads. You can make almost any bracelet or necklace into a go ...

Twisted Silver Rocks Vintage
2007-12-13 14:27:30
I’ve fallen in love with Twisted Silver jewelry. A complete line of antique-inspired jewelry, creations range from Victorian to Mod. My favorite piece is the Hepburn earrings. They evoke that classic Hollywood style that I adore. Plus they are comfortable to wear and go with everything. These have become a staple in my jewelry wardrobe. Designer Debra Mitchell was kind enough to speak to Spork Fashion.
Tell us about your background. Have you always wanted to be a jeweler?
From as early as I can remember I have had a creative drive- from cutting my dolls hair into the “In” style (which was shag at the time) to designing my own signature look from second hand store finds. I have always loved anything “vintage” – and I particularly love taking something old or oddball and turning it into something fresh and hip. I loved fashion- but never planned to end up in jewelry design.
I was born and raised in Utah, graduated Weber State College with a Fashion Merchandising ...
