Camilla Wellton’s Designs are Works of Art
2007-08-22 18:06:11
Camilla Wellton got into the fashion game later than most. Though a hobby since age 10, it wasn’t until college that she decided she needed designing to be more than a hobby. “It was during my math course - I was studying environmental science. I realized in the middle of a post-relationship grief that i needed to focus my time on uplifting, creative things or I wouldn’t be happy,” Camilla recalls. “I had cried before every exam the previous term, when we talked about the current state of the planet. I needed something to inspire hope in me.” She left her math and earth science courses behind and set out to be a full-time fashion designer. Camilla’s craft is stunning. This is her high-waisted skirt. The construction is amazing - simple but with unexpected accents to make it incredibly special. For example, the wrap skirt curves upwards so as to go overthe hip, rather than across. Not only is this unusual, but it helps the skirt drape ...

WaterField Designs Does it Again With Their Racer-X Laptop Cases
2007-08-21 17:18:45
Not too long ago, I waxed poetic on how much I loved my Waterfield Sling bag. It is roomy and sturdy and well designed. WaterField Designs does it again with their Racer-X line of Mac laptop cases. The main computer compartment is incredibly well padded. I am not daring enough to put my precious MacBook Pro in the bag and do a drop-test, but it more than stands up to everyday knocks and bangs. And the reason behind the strenghth? Layers and layers of padding. It is lined with thick neoprene, and beneath that, corrugated plastic surrounded by a plastic padding that is similar to Styrofoam - but more durable. The bottom of the bag is solid for protection and to maintain shape. A second compartment offers enough space for papers, notebooks, or a magazine, along with padded pockets for your iPod and mouse, and non-padded pockets for cables and miscellany. A slim back pocket in the back allows for your laptop to be safely and securely attached to your luggage. Like all of WaterFiel ...

A Quickie For the Weekend
2007-08-17 20:08:54
Minds out of the gutters, dear readers. I am talking about a quick blog post (getting the house ready for a new puppy). It’s very last-minute, but starting August 19th, the Fashionably Conscious charity auction kicks off on Ebay. Similar to the Clothes Off Our Back charity started by Jane Kaczmarek, Fashionably Conscious is selling vintage pieces by top designers such as Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Gucci, and more. All profits go to Coconut Grove Cares’s Barnyard Community Center, which offers free after-school and summer programs for over 250 children, and provides a much-needed safe haven for the West Grove community. I don’t have a link to the auctions, but I am sure if you do an Ebay search for “Fashionably Conscious” or “Coconut Grove Cares”, you will hit the jackpot (just don’t forget to check off the “search descriptions” box). For more information on the Barnyard and its many charitable services, please vi ...
Digital Accessories for a Digital World
2007-08-15 20:51:26
Electronics are an inescapable part of everyday life. It is only in the last couple of years that companies have even tried “fashion up” their products - and even then, it is limited to different colored cell phones and tacky crystals better left to teenagers. That’s where Jennifer Allison comes in.Tired of finding cell phone straps that were functional but without style, she decided to create her own. “I wanted something elegant and thought to use better materials and classic design sensibility to create something more unique,” Jennifer says. Rather than nylon and plastic, she uses gold and silver plated metals, charms, and Swarovski crystals. Jennifer started out just creating them just for herself. “My love for collecting charms spawned my desire to start attaching them to things otherwise untraditional.” But while managing a jewelry gallery, one of her coworkers took a liking to her cell phone charm. “She was also interested ...
Tikilynn Inspires a Return to Letter Writing
2007-08-14 18:09:45
It’s the digital age. Email has replaced letter writing, faxing, even phone calls. And why wouldn’t it? It is immediate, more reliable (although intense spam filters are making that less true), and you don’t have to buy a stamp. I certainly am attached at the hip (literally) to my email. But I am old-fashioned in some respects. I still write with paper and pen for a lot of purposes: scripts, to-do lists and notes to name a few. There is something immensely satisfying about putting ink on a blank page. Alison McLaurin feels the same way. A writer herself, Alison was frustrated that letter writing has become a lost artform. She created Tikilynn, a line of cards that are young and stylish - these are not your mother’s thank you cards. Inspired by her cat, Tiki, Alison incorporates whimsical illustrations of the feline on most of her cards (funky abstract designs are also available for you dog lovers). The correspondence cards are crisp and smooth; the g ...
Aelisheva Makes Haute Couture Affordable and Beautiful

Since each piece is hand made, it allows the designers to make each one slightly different. “It is a stronger piece that way,” Sanja say via translator. Alyse expands on this: “We have both been doing fashion and visual arts for many years, so at this point it comes out naturally and rapidly on its own. We do many variations on elements from earlier work.” In fact, the designers keep boxes of fabric scraps, bits and pieces of trim, and miscellaneous bits for use in each creation. “I have many pieces of material, which wait to be put in their own place in their own time,” Sanja muses. “I do not know if that is collage or painting, maybe both one and the other.” No piece is this more evident in than the lovely grey and red dress I have here. The bodice is made of a thin, stretchy piece of textured charcoal fabric. The skirt is a darker, complimentary grey in silky-soft velour. Various appliques and bits of trim in red and white offe ...
All Tied Up with Spragwerks’s Corset Ring
2007-08-09 16:19:23
I am so obsessed with corsets that I want to adorn my entire body with them. Corsets really aren’t meant to be worn anywhere but the torso. Luckily Spragwerks is changing that. Owned by Rich Sandomeno, a former mechanic-turned-jewelry designer, Spragwerks offers custom made pieces that can best be described as “industrial couture.” Rich worked as a diesel mechanic for 10 years before he decided he needed more than just a job he liked - he needed to follow a passion. Taking a leap of faith, he quit his union job and set up his first studio in his parents’ basement. After a year of living off his savings, Rich took part-time gigs to stay afloat, but always maintained his artistic vision. “I did whatever it took to get by,” says Rich. “Art direction on indie films, window display work… even turning a wrench now and again. Many Ramen noodle dinners, too.” After three years of work and dedication, Rich was able to fully support ...
Lint Was Running Out of Places to Put Jewelry… So They Created Hair Jewelry
2007-08-06 19:04:38
I am always looking for new, interesting, and innovative products. Dresses and shoes are wonderful and certainly necessary, but I am also looking for innovation. Something that you won’t find in the mall. Lint’s hair jewelry certainly fits that description. Sure, you can go to any boutique and find jeweled hair clips, pins, and headbands. But how about necklaces for your hair? Hairlaces? Colleen McCann calls them Lint Lures, and it is true hair jewelry. While clips and pins are functional pieces that happen to be jeweled, Lint Lures are purely there for adornment. Want your hair pulled back in a bun, or swept off to one side? Better buy some pins and combs. Want to adorn your ‘do as you would ears or wrists? Turn to Lint Lures. Lint Lures are delicate chains and charms attached to tiny combs. They drip, drape, swoop, and swirl through any type of hair, any hair style. Beyond clips and bands, these pieces can truly take the place of earrings or necklaces ...
Fashion Flashback: Prom, 1998
2007-08-03 18:07:06
I have decided to open up the fashion vaults and find some outfits from the past that aren’t too horribly embarrassing (which means that we will probably be avoiding ages 11-15). Let’s start with prom. Apparently every little girl dreams of their wedding, and their prom. I dreamt of neither. I never planned to go to prom. I had never gone to a single school dance; why start now, when the end of school was in sight? As prom approached, and I was accepted to college, I began to relax, have more fun… and I decided I may as well go to prom. It is one of those things that I didn’t want to look back on and regret; I figured I would regret going less than not going. And of course, going to prom means getting a prom dress. And of course, I wanted a new dress. That season, the corseted-bodice, full-skirt dress was all the rage. My fascination with corsets was steadily growing, and this was a nice, easy segue in. I must admit, I do not remember much about the dr ...
The Only Item I Ever Purchased From The Gap
2007-07-31 17:26:06
This is the only item from the Gap you will find in my closet. Somehow I ended up with a gift certificate to the Gap. I think it may have been from a returned gift, but it had been sitting in my wallet for so long I can’t remember. I tried to spend it, I really did. Every time I went to the mall I stopped into the Gap, trying to find something to spend it on. But everything was just so… bland. Boring. Nothing I wanted to be seen in. I tried to spend it on pajamas, but even that didn’t work. Nothing was soft enough, or came in a color or style I would be willing to even sit around the house in. I tried some of their bath & body products, but I couldn’t stand the scents. This gift certificate sat in my wallet for at least two years. Finally, finally, I found these flats. The were exactly the cost of my gift card so I wouldn’t have a horrible $2.34 left over. Plus I didn’t own any gold shoes, and I am always trying to expand the color p ...
