I Love You, Beth Cooper by Larry Doyle
2007-09-08 03:43:00
When I heard that I Love You, Beth Cooper had been written by Larry Doyle, who worked on “The Simpsons” and “Beavis & Butt-Head” (two shows that I grew up on), I decided I had to read it. I didn’t even bother to find out what it was about. It turns out to be a story chronicling the graduation night of several students. A “coming of age” tale, if you will, but without all that sappy “finding yourself” crap. Denis Cooverman, class valedictorian, debate team champion, and all-around nerd decides that his commencement speech is the perfect time to profess his love for Beth Cooper, the prettiest, most popular girl in school. Denis might be a math whiz, but he has absolutely no social skills whatsoever (during the same speech, Denis also revealed at the deepest, darkest secrets of many of his fellow graduates. He didn’t name names, but everyone figured it out). During a brief, awkward encounter over post-commencement pun ...
Light at the End of the World by Erasure
2007-09-08 02:20:10
I dug Erasure in the 1980s. They were fun, they were poppy, they… well, they were the 1980s. Erasure in 2000? Do they translate? The trick for 1980s bands is to evolve so that their sound is modern and not out-dated, while still remaining familiar so as not to alienate long-time fans. New Order did it well; The Cure didn’t. Erasure’s evolution took them to the only logical place: an album full of gay-bar dance music. This is not a bad thing. Along with Pet Shop Boys, Erasure was the gayest band of the 80s (something my husband gets teased for mercilessly when listening to classic Erasure at work). So going from gay-pop to gay-techno is perfect. Too bad their new album, Light at the End of the World isn’t perfect. It starts off good. The first three tracks are techno-heavy, but bright, cheery, very danceable. Erasure’s signature candy pop with a modern, rave-inspired backbone. The tempo slows considerably after that. “Storm in a TeacupR ...
James Perse: Portrait of An Obsession
2007-09-05 17:45:16
It is safe to say I am obsessed with James Perse. My first piece was the long sleeve, off-the-shoulder top that was such a hit when it was first introduced. What caught my attention most was the fabric. I am a very tactile person, and often shop with my fingers. I won’t even pull something off the rack if it isn’t pleasing to the touch. I love the cut of his shirts, and the fabrics… they are just so stunningly complimentary, but easy to wear. I went a little nuts after that first James Perse shirt… and bought damn near everything else I could. My current collection contains: Four long sleeve, off-the-shoulder tops in black, deep purple, bright pink, and orange Four short sleeve crewnecks in white, lavendar, red, and aqua One short sleeve henley tee in red Two long sleeve crewnecks in rust and sage Two wife beater tanks in black and baby blue Two long sleeve rolled-neck shirts in brown and teal One long sleeve hoodie in army green One long sleeve boatneck ...

It’s Five! Five! Five Bags in One!
2007-08-30 17:44:39
My mother made a big mistake showing me this clutch. She found it while helping my grandmother clean out the closet. I told her I was borrowing it (along with a number of other vintage goodies to be posted later) to photograph it and put it up on Spork Fashion. Little does she know it is an extended borrow. I don’t know what era this is from. The style looks 1950s, but the ingenuity and some of the materials look like they came from the 1970s. Either way, this clutch is rockin’ my world. With five different looks (black velvet, black patent leather, gold brocade, tweed, and default black nylon) this bag can literally go from day to night. A hidden snap beneath the black flap on either side of the bag allows for the covers to be attached and appear nearly seamless. If you look closely (and yes, I always do) you can see that the covers don’t line up entirely symmetrically. However, I’m sure most people wouldn’t even notice this. In fact, unless you ...

Fashion Flashback: 1st Grade Fashion
2007-08-29 16:23:48
I went through many a fashion stage even as a child. Until not long after this photo was taken, in 1985, I would wear only dresses (that quickly segued into pants-only until high school). I remember that this dress was easily my favorite. I loved the bright magenta and teal. I don’t remember the kittens being a big selling point, but those ruffles sure were. As if that dress weren’t busy enough on its own, I added a string of plastic heart-shaped beads in every color of the rainbow. I think the theory back then was “throw on every favorite outfit, shoes, jewelry, etc. and you will create the all-time favorite outfit.” Yes, it makes me a bit busy to look at, but I still have fond memories of that dress - I just loved it. It was one of my favorites and very comfortable. I just remember feeing great when I wore that dress. And wasn’t I damn cute as a kid? Laetitia’s Shoes - the New Shape Of Footwear
2007-08-28 18:20:57
I stumbled upon these beauties at a sample sale at Los Angeles boutique Bird Hidden in a corner, nearly buried beneath a rack of dresses, these pumps jumped out at me. I don’t own any pink shoes (or “champagne” shoes, as my friend called them, in order to justify me purchasing two pairs of pink shoes that day) but I think it is about time. These are the Isadora style by Madrid designer Laetitia. Made of a buttery soft metallic suede, these shoes are noticeably different. The toe of this shoe - and all Laetitia’s shoes - are asymmetrical, with very good reason. All her shoes are sculpted around the natural shape of the toe. No squeezing your toes into shoes that end in a Hershey’s Kiss point means no blisters, sores, or other pain that is associated with pointy shoes. I can attest that, indeed, these did not rub or chafe, after an entire evening of wear. The low vamp allows for some sexy toe cleavage. The shoe doesn’t just sculpt itself ar ...
