I’ve Become A Designer Sunglass Whore
2007-09-11 14:00:14
In keeping with the theme from yesterday, let’s show off my new, ridiculous sunglasses. Ridiculous in price, ridiculous in size, ridiculous in lens thickness. When I got my new prescription, I decided I wanted ridiculously huge shades. Lindsay Lohan on her way to rehab huge. Even though such large shades meant extra-large, extra-thick lenses, I still had to have them. Of course, I fell in love with these huge Chanel shades. I was a little embarrassed by the tiny interlocked C logo dotting the frame all the way around - I didn’t want to be that girl with the designer labels emblazoned on the outside of everything. But they made me feel like a rock star, so I got them. Incidentally, my first instinct was to get huge white shades, just to look like a Miami Beach trophy wife, but I decided that was simply not as versatile. If I didn’t need such a pricey prescription (and have a tendency toward pricey frames) I would easily have half a dozen pairs of shades. Becau ...

Yes, I am aware this is New York Fashion Week. No, I am not covering it. I couldn’t make it out there this year, and I am hideously bitter. Luckily I will be attending some Los Angeles Fashion Week Events, so you will get more than you ever dreamed in October. Copyright © 2007 by Alyse Wax This feed is for personal use only. Ralph Lauren Helps Me See The Light… and the Cars, and the Shoes…
2007-09-10 13:34:23
I have worn glasses for most of my life. Getting new frames are always a pain in the ass, but very exciting. It is a long process of switching between sample frames and my own glasses, squinting at a mirror trying to figure out if these are the frames that will best represent me for the next couple years. If they weren’t so damn expensive, I would have multiple frames to match different outfits and moods. My first pair of glasses at age 8 were a pale pink affair that I selected because they blended in with my face. I was horribly self-conscious and thought no one would notice. Instead, they just washed out my already pale complexion. Until college, I wore the most inconspicuous glasses I could find. I finally realized it was hip to be square, and jumped into dark, plastic frames. With each pair, they have gotten progressively edgier and more interesting. My newest pair, by Ralph Lauren, continues in this tradition. I was looking for something closer to Cat’s Eye, ...

The Simpsons Handbook
2007-09-08 04:15:56
The Simpsons Handbook is a big, beautiful volume. Hardbound with a cloth spine; crisp heavyweight pages that are filled with copious, beautiful illustrations. Too bad the book itself is no more than a drawing manual. It is a fantastic drawing manual that gives a great tutorial on drawing anyone and anything in Springfield. The most attention is, of course, given to the Simpson family. Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie each have several pages offering step-by-step instructions for drawing them, including helpful perspective hints, different facial expressions, and foot and hand details. The illustrations are offered as pencil sketches, line drawings, basic shape breakdowns, and even relating it to real-life objects (such as Homer’s up-turned tea cup shoulder, or Bart’s tin can head). Drawing instructions are also offered for dozens of the “supporting cast,” albeit not in as much detail. Lenny, Carl, Mr. Burns, Ralph Wiggum, Milhouse, Kang, Groundskeeper ...
The Animaniacs Season 3
2007-09-08 04:14:01
I grew up on The Animaniacs. My mom always let homework wait until after The Animaniacs. We would always watch it together, and we both enjoyed it. I was probably 12 or 13 at the time, so I wasn’t particularly young, but young enough to enjoy cartoons without the guilt. When I heard that The Animaniacs was on DVD, I was thrilled, but then worried. What if it didn’t hold up after all these years? What if all those cheeky in-jokes were truly only funny to a precocious pre-teen? I was pleased to find out that The Animaniacs is just as funny as an adult, nearly 15 years later. For the uninitiated, The Animaniacs came at the height of the Warner Bros. animation renaissance (along with Tiny Toons, Histeria and Animaniacs spin-off Pinky & the Brain). The Animaniacs themselves are The Warner brothers Yakko and Wakko, and their sister Dot, characters of unknown species who were too crazy to star in any cartoons and therefore locked inside the iconic Warner Bros. water towe ...
Tainted Love: Mating Calls and Fight Songs by Shivaree
2007-09-08 04:12:22
Yes, this is a CD of cover tunes. No, it doesn’t suck. Now that we have gotten the formalities out of the way, let’s talk about Shivaree’s latest disc. I have been a fan ever since Rodney Bingenheimer played “Goodnight Moon” on the two a.m. time slot KROQ stuck him in (way before Kill Bill, by the way). Since then, I have been hooked on Ambrosia Parsley’s (yes that is her real name) haunting, husky-yet-childlike vocals and eclectic soundscapes. Tainted Love: Mating Calls and Fight Songs ironically does not include a cover of “Tainted Love” by Soft Cell. It does contain covers of songs by Chuck Berry, Rich James, Motley Crue, R. Kelly, David Allan Coe, and Michael Jackson, to name a few. The Michael Jackson song, “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” is the only song on this disc that I am familiar with, so to me, Tainted Love is really just a Shivaree disc. The idea behind the disc is to present a look at love, but ...
Brian Jones: Straight From the Heart by Gloria Shepherd
2007-09-08 03:57:23
I am not really a Rolling Stones fan. I like their music, but I don’t feel the need to find out more about the band, or go see them live. I could not name one of their songs that wasn’t a single. So then why was I drawn to this book? It’s about sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll. Tragedy, murder, abuse, mystery, a rags to riches story. It has all elements to be a fascinating read, regardless of the subject. On top of that, it has allegedly been banned in the UK (or so says the press release; I could not find anything to back up this statement), and I wanted to find out what could offend an entire nation. Brian Jones: Straight From the Heart is not a straightforward biography. It is almost written like a novel, in third-person narrative. It tells the entire story of Brian’s life, from his abusive home life, his times prostituting himself to get by, forming the Rolling Stones, his falling out with the band, and his mysterious death. Although it never expl ...
Panic Attack! Art in the Punk Years
2007-09-08 03:55:47
The punk movement was best known for its music and, to a lesser extent, the fashion. But the 1970s and early 1980s gave birth to a thriving punk art movement. Painting, photography, film, and performance art were all major mediums in the movement, and all well represented in Panic Attack! Art In the Punk Years. Panic Attack! is a beautiful hardbound volume featuring some of the most influential punk artists of the era. Well-known artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Robert Mapplethorpe are represented here, as are lesser-known artists such as Andrew Logan, Barbara Kruger, and Adrian Piper. Interspersed throughout the book are insightful essays by David Bussel, Andrew Wilson, Ariella Yedgar, and Rosetta Brooks, to name a few. Unlike many art books, this volume includes all the information you could want, both for your own edification, and a a reference pieces - though the pages are too slick and crisp to be banished to a dark corner of a library. It is fully ind ...
One Cell in the Sea by A Fine Frenzy
2007-09-08 03:54:06
A Fine Frenzy is not really a band, but one very talented 22-year-old named Alison Sudol. I admit that I was first drawn to her for completely shallow reasons. I saw a photo spread with her in an issue of Interview magazine and it was lust at first sight (I have a bit of a fetish for redheads). I am also a sucker for a girl and her piano (see also: Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Fiona Apple). Her debut album, One Cell in the Sea is haunting, delicate, lyrical, atmospheric, and moving. I had better stop with all the adjectives. Born in Seattle, raised in Los Angeles, Sudol graduated high school at 16 and immediately started a band. At 18 she struck out on her own. Rather than hit up the infamous L.A. club scene, Sudol secreted herself away in her living room with her music. When Virgin Records CEO Jason Flom came to see - and eventually sign - A Fine Frenzy, it was in that very living room. Her mother even baked cookies. Sudol’s influences are obviously varied: Elton John, ...
Madonna: Wild Angel
2007-09-08 03:51:18
I am a huge, crazy Madonna fan. You probably wouldn’t know it by looking at me; I don’t have a Madonna shrine in my apartment. Just the normal amount of CDs (aka all of them) and a handful of books and DVDs. But bring up Madonna in conversation and I go nuts. As a fan for over 20 years, I have seen Madonna’s career through all her different stages. Maybe it is because I am such a fan that I did not like Madonna: Wild Angel. Madonna is more than just a singer or actress or dancer; she is an icon. Love her or hate her, you know of her, can name a dozen of her songs, and can probably give a pretty sold background on her. This documentary is a straight-forward, low-rent, unauthorized timeline of her career. Oh wait, maybe I didn’t like it because it was just poorly done. Being unauthorized, there are no interviews with Madonna or any important figure in her life. In fact, the only interviewees featured are a couple of editors from magazi ...
The Pinball Theory of Apocalypse by Jonathan Selwood
2007-09-08 03:47:43
The Pinball Theory of Apocalypse is the debut novel by Jonathan Selwood. It has all the elements for a fantastic story: natural disasters, modern art, vaginal rejuvenation, a nutjob art dealer, a billionaire, a fossil-thieving teenager, and another teen engaged to a man twice her age. Sadly, these elements never form a cohesive whole. Isabel Raven turns a job recreating classic paintings for the almost-wealthy into a career at L.A.’s newest art world It Girl. Her biggest fan in a young, charming, single billionaire. Her parents are a bit eccentric, but she comes from a loving, well-adjusted home. Sounds pretty great right? Well, of course, it isn’t. Isabel’s art dealer is an exploitative psychopath. She has concerns that her newfound stardom is “selling out.” Her billionaire admirer has an adopted thirteen-going-on-twenty-five year old who gets Isabel involved in several felonies. Isabel’s long-time boyfriend is cheating on her with a slut ...
O, Perilous World by Rasputina
2007-09-08 03:44:42
I discovered Rasputina quite by accident. In high school I belonged to one of those record clubs. You know, you get 48 CDs and all you have to give in return is your first born. Every month they would send this music catalogue, which would have the tiniest, half-sentence blurb about a wide range of artists. I had never heard of Rasputina before, but their description read something like “goth-punk cello trio.” I was intrigued, so I read on. It listed one of their songs: “Transylvanian Concubine.” I was sold. Rasputina quickly became one of my favorite bands. They even helped me “meet” my now-husband. We hung out in the same group, but I didn’t like him - he was kind of a jerk. One day he asked, in an open question to the group, if anyone had ever heard of the band Rasputina. I immediately chimed in, and instantly earned a bit of respect from him - I was the only one who knew Raspy. As you can see, Raspy holds a special place in my he ...
