I’m Bringing Back the Hat
2007-09-24 18:14:09
I stumbled upon this fantastic vintage store a few weeks ago. I was in the area looking for a yarn shop, and found Playclothes instead. The place was jam packed with copious amounts of vintage clothing, shoes, hats, jewelry, coats, knick-knacks, and other various pieces of yore. After well over an hour in the store, I finally came away with this gorgeous hat (along with a couple other pieces which you will see later). Black felt and velvet, with a long, swooping feather adornment, this hat is probably late 1930s, early 1940s. I have always loved the polish that a good hat brings to an outfit. I watch episodes of I Love Lucy and gaze lovingly at the hats Lucy buys obsessively, and wondering if I could pull one off. Seeing this hat, I made a decision: I am going to bring back the hat. I was concerned that I would be self-conscious wearing a hat around town. Not a sun hat or a baseball cap, but a hat worn purely for style. I have worn it out several times now, and each time, I ha ...

Rawr!

As we have covered here before, Jennifer Allison is making the digital age more fashionable. But she is also making the fashionable age more digital with this lion’s mane-like necklace (proudly modeled by Spork Dog Keegan). But although this necklace looks like fiber cables dangling from the neck, glowing ends exposed, it actually has much much older roots. Jennifer explains: “This necklace specifically started with my current interest in Israeli designer, Michal Golan. I love her use of gemstones and crystals and wanted to emulate her design sense in my work. I am also inspired by the land where I spent my childhood. Cahokia Mounds was just minutes away and I???ve always been fascinated by the ancient civilization that once dominated the Mississippi Valley. The Native Americans of Cahokia - especially between the years A.D. 800 and 1400 - flourished in this area of Southern Illinois. Their use of natural materials for adornment and their vibrant culture as a whole is a ...

Turns Out, I Love Kate Spade’s Fragrance, Too
2007-09-19 09:34:30
When I first sniffed Kate Spade’s signature fragrance, I thought it was too heady, too over powering. I was proud of myself - finally a Kate Spade product I wouldn’t be lusting over. Many months later, after that initial sniff, I was given a bottle of it for my birthday. I must have aged a lot in those few months, for when i gave the perfume one final sniff, I realised it was a splendid fragrance. Copyright © 2007 by Alyse Wax This feed is for personal use only. Couture Rocks!
2007-09-18 17:47:16
Everyone can use a little rock n’ roll in their wardrobe. Can’t commit to the tattoos and mohawk? Do your thighs chafe at the through of tight leather pants? Then give Rock Bands a shot. “The name came when people asked what it was,” creator Lee Dahlberg says. “It’s a ‘Rock’ on a ‘Band’ ….it’s a ROCK BAND!” Ok, we know how you got the name. But what about where you got the idea for the actual cuff? “The inspiration came from a John Wayne movie I saw as a kid,” says Lee. “He came into town on a horse wearing a thick leather cuff with a hunk of turquoise strapped to it with shards of leather. This is the modern version of that with a bit of a 60’s throwback feel.” Lee has a varied background that led him to Rock Bands. Working in the casino business, as a croupier, model, actor, and at an ad agency, Lee combines all these elements into the theory that there is a Rock Ba ...

Obligatory Emmys Roundup

We will do this quick so we can get back to the good stuff: Ryan Seacrest - His awful patent leather tie distracted me from his awful hosting duties. Jamie Pressley - The longer I looked, the more her black glittery 70s number annoyed me. Terry O’Quinn - His hot pink shirt and black sequined tie made a fabulous, bold statement. I am now threatening that look on my husband. Becki Newton - My Ugly Betty style icon does not disappoint in this daring mermaid dress. Elizabeth Perkins - Little House on the Prairie wants its window dressings back. America Ferrera - Normally looks beautiful, but the blue strapless she wore was not flattering. Vanessa Williams - Possibly my favorite dress of the night. I adore feathers, and Vanessa wore them beautifully. Eva Longoria - Her silver beaded mini was hot, and very low-cut. I think I saw a hint of nipple. Marcia Cross - Beautiful, unique vintage-style. But I think we should start calling the show Desperate Nipples. Katherine Heigl - “ ...

DVD Review: Ugly Betty
2007-09-14 13:06:59
Unless you got lost in your walk-in closet for the last few months, you know that Ugly Betty is the most fashionable show on television. I will be kind to those of you who have been having fun in your own closets. This campy prime-time soap stars America Ferrera as Betty, the homely but highly capable assistant at uber-chic fashion magazine Mode. She is given the job to keep the playboy editor-in-chief from sleeping with his assistant (a problem in the past). She is great at her job and has a good rapport with her boss, but the rest of the company hates her. She is, after all, “ugly.” The show is based on a Columbian telenovella. You get those trashy soap plot lines: murder, schemes, affairs, transsexuals. But the show itself is lighthearted, a little bit tongue-in-cheek, and generally good-natured. There is a sharp contrast between the ultra-sleek, ultra-glam world of Mode magazine in Manhattan (and the people who inhabit that world) and Betty’s tight-knit, s ...

A Laptop Case For The Girls
2007-09-13 17:44:59
Yes, I am obsessed with laptop cases. Probably because I am just obsessed with my laptop. My MacBook Pro is a good-looking machine; I want its case to be just as good looking. Enter Mobile Edge. They offer an entire line of totes, briefcases, backpacks and portfolios specifically designed for women. Not little girls, but businesswomen. This particular tote is part of the BEF Line. The Boomer Esiason Foundation is dedicated to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis, and Mobile Edge donates 10% of BEF Tote sales to the foundation. The bag goes a step further: it is 100% vegan-friendly. The leather trim is faux; the suede lining is faux; the body of the bag is nylon. The bag is compartment rich: room enough for files, a mouse, cables, wallet, pens, etc. Don’t be offended by the detachable cosmetics case - you know you will use it. Be vaguely offended by the detachable exterior cell phone pouch. It is too small for a smart phone and a Razr is a tight fit. The interior cell ph ...
