Interview with Moonlight Costume Designer Salvador Perez
2007-10-16 14:39:15
Let’s face it: when you think vampires, you probably have a pretty stereotypical notion of their wardrobes. Long capes, velvet gowns, satin smoking jackets, all in shades of deepest black and bloodiest red. But as Buffy might say, “That is so five minutes ago.” Enter Moonlight, the new vampire drama on CBS. These vamps are still dark and brooding, but they do it in style. Costume designer Salvador Perez makes sure of that. “I want them to be fashionistas,” he says. “They are old, I assume they would have accumulated money over the years.” To achieve this, Salvador dresses his cast in a mix of top designer labels and custom-made pieces. Show lead Mick, played by Alex O’Loughlin, is dressed in what Sal likes to call “glam goth.” “Mick doesn’t look good in crew-neck shirts,” Salvador says, “so he is always in collard shirts and henleys. He’s a vampire - it’s always about the neck.̶ ...
Los Angeles Fashion Week: Sue Wong
2007-10-15 16:25:02
First, I must apologize for the crappy photos. I did not have access to the media risers, so all my Fashion Week photos are taken from my seat. Now, on to the fashion. Sue Wong’s 75 piece Modern Art show was the first I attended. He collection consisted mainly of handpainted silk bubble and trapeze dresses in a variety of vibrant colors and motifs. Pieces were inspired by modern master artists, 1960s mod, African art, and Grecian goddesses. The bright, flirty short dresses are perfect for pool parties. And the floating Grecian gowns as part of her evening collection came in a myriad of bright Spring colors. Her three Modern Bride pieces looked more appropriate for a 1960s go-go dancer. Who else would wear a white bubble mini covered in 3D beaded silk flowers? The only celebrity I spotted was Sara Ramirez from Grey’s Anatomy. She looked ravishing, as usual. All in all, there were lots of wearable pieces, but nothing really stood out. Copyright © ...

Even Babies Should Look Stylish
2007-10-02 12:55:48
I do not have kids. I do not want kids. But I have friends who have kids. So I knit for them. I like knitting baby things because they are small so they usually knit up faster and take up less yarn. Plus, I like knitting plush toys and it is hard to justify knitting them for myself. A friend had a baby, and I decided to take a stab at knitting booties. I had a pattern for “1-Hour Baby Booties” and, still being a knitting knewbie, it was a great way to practice some new stitches. In the book, the booties were white and blue, with a big adorable button on them. The were cute, but bland. So I decided to make a few adjustments and make some rock star booties. I chose red and black, one of my favorite color combinations, and I happened to have both yarns laying around. I ditched the cutsey button (because babies can choke on those things, right?) and added corset lacing up the back. A little trampy for a 6 month old? Nah, I don’t think so. It’s not like ...

Sleep With Modesty Returns to Old Hollywood Glamour
2007-09-28 13:54:43
“I started designing nighties in part because I couldn’t find anything that met all my needs,” explains designer Treea Cracknell. “I wanted a nightie that felt luxurious, was flattering and made me feel sexy and beautiful but didn’t leave me feeling overexposed.” Thus, Sleep With Modesty was born. “The name Sleep with Modesty is kind of a pun, as it as it refers in part to me. My bohemian parents named me Modesty Tree. I’ve never used my first name, and added an ‘a’ onto the end of Tree before going to school.” Born in Mexico City and spending much of her early years driving around Central America in a yellow VW Beetle, Treea later studied photography in art school. After over 10 years in new media, she decided it was time for a change. “My mum taught me to sew when I was young and I’ve always designed and made clothes, so when I decided to start my own business designing clothes seemed like a natural step.̶ ...

DVD Review: Broken
2007-09-26 23:23:28
I wanted to like this film. I really, really wanted to like it. The packaging alone made me want to like it: the outer cover slides apart at the center, at a freshly stitched wound, to reveal a red, gory mess. Come on, how many slasher DVDs grab you like that? Sadly, the film itself is not as inventive. A nameless woman (though the credits list her as “Hope,” of course) is drugged and abducted, waking in the woods. She is tied to a tree, tenuously balanced on a tree stump and hung on rope. The captor makes it clear to the woman that the only way to save her own life is to rip out fresh stitches from her stomach, retrieve the razor blade that he hid in her guts, and cut the rope before she hangs herself. Promising start! Sure, it is very close to the objectives in Saw, but it is still a good bloody mess. Unfortunately, the fun stops there. The woman, having passed her test, is then chained up and kept captive. And that’s it. The captor makes his captive scrub ...

Rubber: It’s Not Just For Fetishists Anymore
2007-09-25 12:32:06
When I think rubber, I think two things: ugly but functional home & garden supplies, and fetishists. “Stylish” never comes to mind. Jules Sherman is changing that. “Ever since I designed a cosmetic bag for Bath & Body Works with a little rubber brand tag, I wanted to use that material for other products. There is something beautifully tactile about the material,” Jules explains. With a background in industrial design, it seems natural that Jules would design in relief. Her line includes pouches, luggage tags, belts, and hair clips. All in rubber, all with three dimensional designs molded into the surfaces. The intricate design work goes back to Jules’s initial love of printmaking. This pouch is one of my favorite pieces. I love the intricate design (”inspired by historical Russian fabric prints I found online”), and of course, I love the color combination (”in general, color, texture, and fashion inspire me”). And I ...
