Ode to Halloween
2007-10-31 14:54:12
In honor of my favorite holiday, I thought we would do a fashion flashback to Halloweens past.
1982
Bunny!
1983
Butterfly princess
1984
Strawberry Shortcake
1985
She-Ra! Princess of Power!
1986
Prima Ballerina
1991
1950s chic, complete with my mom’s vintage cardigan
1992
Wednesday Addams with matching headless doll (and my little brother)
1993
My mom normally made my costumes. This was my first - and only - store-bought costume. Now I know why. I just liked it because it was sexy.
1994
By now, I was in my goth phase, so for Halloween, I just reached into my closet, threw on a cape, and called myself a vampire.
1996
I worked at a haunted house this year, in the vampire room. Here I am in several costumes
1997
This costume has no real title. I found this 1970s chiffon dress at the thrift shop and threw it on
1998
Dead princess - with makeup FX done by yours truly
2001
As Satine from Moulin Rouge
2002
Andy Warhol and his work of art

Los Angeles Fashion Week: Bird of Prey Spring 2008
2007-10-26 15:19:33
I was not impressed by the Bird of Prey show. The look seemed to be a combination of radical hippie and college student lazy. The pieces were loose, free-flowing, little shaping and lots of tie-dye. It looked comfy to wear around the house, but I can’t imagine going out in it.

Los Angeles Fashion Week: Monarchy Collection Spring 2008
2007-10-25 12:19:32
Monarchy Collection’s spring show was skillful blend of preppy-punk and a dash of 80s styling. Letterman sweaters share the runway with black leather and playsuits. Plaid treads between clean-cut and hard-core. There were adorable hats, pinstripes, and corseted dresses - three of my favorite things. Though the majority of the show was preppy-punk, there were a few pieces at the end that, while adorable, felt as if they were from a different collection. It was a little bit jarring. I was impressed with the models’ agility on the real-sod runway - only one misstep, and it was at the end of show.

Los Angeles Fashion Week: Voom by Joy Han Spring 2008
2007-10-24 14:03:57
Voom by Joy Han presented an energetic collection for Spring 2008. Everything was very youthful and energetic. Bright shades of yellow, purple, and pink dominated. So did graphic prints: checks, polka dots, zebra stripes. There was also a nice selection of vinyl pieces - perfect for those spring showers. For evening wear, Han toned down the bright colors of her collection by adding a layer of black lace. All in all, a fun collection that is young and wearable.

Los Angeles Fashion Week: Heatherette Spring 2008
2007-10-23 12:13:01
Heatherette always has a fun, wild collection - Spring 08 is no exception. I was impressed with the number of truly wearable pieces that still hold on to that playful Heatherette style. There were still some of those trademark Heatherette art pieces there. Trends spotted on the Heatherette runway: lots of red white and blue and America-themes; bright plaids; and corsets. Lots of beaded, braided, and fringed details.

Los Angeles Fashion Week: Joseph Domingo Spring 2008
2007-10-22 12:14:58
Joseph Domingo’s Spring 2008 collection consists of pink, gold and white. Lots of bare shoulders and open backs, lots of swingy, fluid dresses.
White chiffon mini dress with a sexy open back
Borrowed from the Solid Gold Dancers?
Cute jammies, though perhaps better suited for girls
Gold sequined gown - a little bit prom-y, but love the glitz
Two favorites: pink ostrich feather mini-dress, and pink Fortuni pleated gown with braided trim
Beautiful beaded detailing
And the grand finale, a gown of pink organza and ostrich feathers
Joseph Domingo and two of his models

Los Angeles Fashion Week Round-Up
2007-10-19 12:21:23
Fashion Week is finally over here in Los Angeles - boy, was it exhausting! Next week I will have a full report on all the shows I attended. For now, while I recover, here is a quick wrap-up. I saw some great shows. I saw some banal shows. I missed a couple shows I wanted to see due to a back injury. I was disappointed by the lack of gift bags at most of the shows (come on - everyone goes for the goody bags). I was surprised and annoyed at the poor organization of the event. I think a big problem was just too many people in such a tight space. The press access was terrible - hence my less-than-stellar photos. But look at it this way - my photos are picking up angles that you probably won’t see elsewhere!
The biggest trend I noticed was that gauzy, Greecian-inspired pieces are still in (and perhaps always will be). High-waists have carried over from fall. Belts are skinny. Silhouettes were loose, flowing, and baggy - though the few corseted pieces got applause across t ...

Los Angeles Fashion Week: Randolph Duke
2007-10-17 14:49:31
Randolph Duke’s show was arguably one of the most popular at Fashion Week. His return to the runway with a Spring 2008 couture collection was beautiful. In keeping with the trend of “going green,” Duke’s collection is a sophisticated palette of earthy pastels and construction that is reminiscent of forms found in nature. Black and white, navy and cream are also prevalent.
Duke’s collection reinvents the silhouette. Body-conscious pieces wrap the body, with unexpected sprays of tulle and pleated taffeta. Sophisticated suits mix with playful suits that float gracefully. I wasn’t thrilled with the leather bras - those never seem like a good idea - but for the most part, the collection was elegant and almost ethereal. Very wearable, while still embracing couture.
