District Cotton Turns Old Art Into New
2007-11-20 15:09:02
Everyone is going green, by using organic, sustainable materials. But what ever happened to recycling? Granted, recycling old products into new often uses the same amount of energy and produces just as much pollution - if not more. The best way to recycle is to reuse material in its current state. So District Cotton did just that. They have created a line of purses and carryalls that are made from vinyl advertisement banners.
“We get the materials directly from the companies that print them,” designer Rodrigo Chapero tells me. “A lot are samples, made for clients, that they normally throw away.” The inspiration came from Freitag’s truck tarpaulin recycled bags. After experimenting with different materials, the vinyl banners were chosen for their durability and design.
Each bag is hand-made in a tiny Buenos Aires studio. Banners are cleaned and sorted by color, then pieced together using the best sections of color, text, and imagery. “Each ...

Spork Exclusive! Actress Shannyn Sossamon Shares Her Style
2007-11-08 12:50:41
“I would describe my style as ‘lazy dancer,’” actress Shannyn Sossamon admits to me on the set of her new TV show, Moonlight. This makes sense, as she is a trained dancer. But she doesn’t run around in shiny leotards and severe buns. “I need to be comfortable,” she says. “I’m a sucker for oversized sweatshirts, legwarmers, and dresses over jeans.”
Today she fits her own description in dark, skinny jeans, gold flip-flops, and a dress by Fremont. “I was given this at a photo shoot,” Shannyn says. “I like it because it is simple, but the ruffles give it a bit of drama.” “That dress is from our Fall 2006 collection,” says Jessica Loria, one-third of Fremont Apparel. “It stems from a very equestrian themed collection that had lots of little mini dresses with tomboy accents.”
“It is so great to see someone like Shannyn wearing [our dress],” enthuses Jessica, “ ...

May’s Lab: Social T-Shirting
2007-11-07 18:53:25
Ori Guttin believes customers are the future. Or at least, his future. “Buyers are the core of my company. Their thoughts, opinions and interests are all that matter.” His company is May’s Lab, which offers urban-chic t-shirts and undies for men and women. Like their designs? Want to model for them? Ok.
May’s Lab encourages - nay, insists - on customer involvement. The packaging for their shirts instructs the buyer to wear their pieces, snap photos, and submit them to their online gallery. They also want to hear your personal philosophies for possible inclusion in upcoming designs. “I wanted to create a community of these like-minded buyers who could relate to one another,” explains Ori. “I wanted them to feel special and wanted them to keep coming back to the May???s Lab Web site to see their friends, post a new quote or buy a new clothing item.”
Ori, born in Mexico City and a world traveler before settling down in the United ...

Fashion For A Good Cause
2007-11-05 15:54:03
A round up of some fashions-for-a-cause that have caught our attention:
Boy Meets Girl has teamed up with Urban Outfitters to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. The tote, available only at Urban Outfitters stores and online, will donate 100% of profits to Young Survival Coalition, an organization dedicated to information on breast cancer for women under 40 years old. The tote will retail for a mere $15.
The Keep A Breast Foundation, an organization dedicated to breast cancer prevention through awareness and education, has a new line of products available, with 100% of profits going to the organization. Intending to raise awareness through artistry, each piece is funky and fun. My personal favorite is the “I [heart] Boobies” shirt. Because really, who doesn’t heart boobies? I defy you to show me someone who doesn’t heart boobies! All items can be purchased through Keep-A-Breast.org or LoserKids.com

Sharon Bolton Scents
2007-11-02 14:48:34
Perfume is like a calling card. That’s why women are always on the hunt for their “signature scent.” You want it to be something unique, individual, not just something that can be picked up at the mall. Sharon Bolton Scents provides just that. Using natural ingredients that are cruelty-free, in recycled packaging, and donating a portion of profits to a variety of charities, these are scents you can feel good about.
The current line includes: Luv, a blend of rare pink gardenias, Hawaiian white flowers, vanilla, and white musk; Soul, papaya, coconut, pineapple, and clean musk; and Truth, a citrusy blend of lemon-lime, exotic floral, and sheer musk. All of her scents are light and fresh. No cloying or headache-inducing scents here. I can’t decide which I like best, so let’s let Sharon tell us more about them.
Tell us about your background. Have you always wanted to be a perfumer?
I have been layering/blending solid perfumes and perfume oils since I w ...

Ninaki Jewelry: Big, Bold, Beautiful
2007-11-01 19:14:12
Ninaki Priddy’s jewelry is everything we love in rings: it’s big, it’s gaudy, it’s heavy, it’s shiny. With a background in medicine, but a lifelong obsession with jewelry (”I remember wearing a ring on every finger when i was fifteen”) turned Ninaki towards a more artistic major. She took up sculpture, and was fascinated with the discarded pieces of Pink Utah alabaster being chipped away. “All the smaller pieces of stone that people would carve away were still big enough to do something with - what, I didn’t know… I just thought the remnants were still precious, not meant for the waste bin.”
These chunks of alabaster were the start of her jewelry career. She still carves her masters out of alabaster. Ninaki’s inspiration comes from structure, even the demolition of structure. Between anatomy classes and architecture classes, her life has revolved around structure, whether it be bone or steel. “This
