Spork Fashion is taking a brief hiatus?
2007-06-11 12:04:04
For those that don’t know, besides being a writer, I am also a TV producer. I am currently in production on a new show, and we are about to go on location. Sadly I don’t think I will be able to update while I am away.
Look for Spork Fashion’s triumphant return on June 25th… if the show doesn’t kill me…

Smart Heels: A Smart Way to Protect Your Shoes
2007-06-07 16:44:20
The moment I saw Smart Heels, I was fascinated. I just had to try them. When I got them, they completely exceeded my expectations.
Smart Heels were born out of tragedy. Moments after stepping outside in brand new Choos, inventor Stacie Urbach’s heel fell prey to a crack in the New York sidewalk. The kind of event that would make most women cry instead turned Stacie into a problem-solver. When she couldn’t find a product to protect her beloved shoes, she invented her own, and thus Smart Heels were born.
Stacie thought of everything when creating Smart Heels. The protectors were designed to be worn to and from your destination. So what do you do with Smart Heels when you reach your destination? Stick them in your purse, where street grime can get all over your lipstick? Nope, Smart Heels come in their own tiny plastic zipper pouch. “How do I make sure that my heels will fit into Smart Heels - without damaging my shoes with the product that is meant to prote ...

Fusion Illusion Brings Fine Detailing to Fused Glass Creations
2007-06-06 16:50:38
Since a friend turned me on to fused glass jewelry, I have not been able to get enough. Most of the pieces I have seen are glittering amalgamations of fantastic colors. Each piece is big, bright, chunky, and definitely a showpiece.
This pendant by Fusion Illusion is a surprising departure from this style of fused glass. A delicate, Asian-inspired flower in relief, set on opaque black glass offers a sedate example of fused glass. Don’t get me wrong; this piece is by no means boring. It is a blend of visual textures: the glossy black background, the shimmering silver petals, and the all-out red glitter that accentuates the delicate stem.
Whereas the previous pendant I wrote about might be better suited for a friend with a bold personality, this pendant is something your timid mother would be proud to wear. Gizmo sure is! The fine detailing on this pendant is something that you won’t see in many other pieces of fused glass.

Tucker Paisley Creates Very Personal Handbags
2007-06-05 18:18:18
It’s tough finding the perfect clutch. Whenever I go searching for one, they are too small, too overdone, or too oddly casual (Le Sport Sac, for one). Tucker Paisley brings us the Emma clutch in their new 2007 line - possibly the most perfect clutch ever.
“We wanted to do something different from what was out there which, was mostly leather bags with lots of stuff on them — jewels, fringe, hardware etc.,” says Tracy Fredkin, one the creators of Tucker Paisley. “We were going for a more classic look, but still wanted to create a bag that would be interesting enough in itself to accessorize your outfit.” The Emma clutch is certainly classic. Simple and sleek, free from adornments, the envelope clutch offers enough room to carry your necessities, but is still slender enough to be tucked under your arm. The size works for daytime; the glossy patent finish and rich colors work for night.
Let’s not forget about the paisley portion of Tucker P ...

Alex Story Creates Wearable Sculptures
2007-06-04 18:01:08
If you have read even one article on this site, you know that I am always on the lookout for new, unique, and innovative products and designs. Hence the attraction to Alex Story Jewelry.
Alex’s background is in sculpture, metal smithing, and welding. She trained in these crafts in Paris and London, but found her creations difficult to transport. Upon returning to her native New York, Alex turned towards jewelry, creating wearable sculptures that were far easier to pack in a suitcase.
This ring is Alex’s Deco Ring - no wonder I am drawn to it. I adore art deco architecture, and this ring certainly echos that style, still visible in many Los Angeles buildings. I love that the ring doesn’t connect all the way. While planning my wedding, I heard over and over that the significance of the wedding ring was to represent the unbreakable flow of love, the circle of life, yadda yadda yadda. I am certainly not sentimental, so I love that this is quietly breaking the rule ...

Band Aid Steps Up To The Plate With Great Blister Protection
2007-06-01 16:32:24
Ok, this isn’t really couture. But every self-respecting fashionista has dozens of painful shoes… so these are must-haves.
First we have the Band-Aid Blister Block Stick. It looks like a travel-sized stick of deodorant, and promises to create an invisible barrier of protection - no stickiness, no stains. And it really delivers. A few weeks ago, we were in Vegas, and I put on the Blister Block Stick before going out in my Marc Jacobs Bronze Pumps. I applied to my heels, the outer edge of my foot, and anywhere that figure skating left mangled, pointy bone spurs. If you have never been to Vegas, there is a lot of walking. A lot. The casinos are mile-long smoky labyrinths, leaving you to dodge ancient slot jockeys and wannabe playboys. After an evening spent hiking through the Vegas wilds, my feet - while sore - were 100% blister-free. The stick is made of hydrogenated vegetable oil. It seems like such a simple solution - why did it take so long to be invented?

BCBG Velvet Spiderweb Blouse
2007-05-31 18:13:48
My mom was actually the one who found this beauty. We were out shopping one day when she spotted this on the rack. I will never forget - she held it up and asked “Is this too weird for you?” I laughed, grabbed it from her, and said “Not at all!” She should have known by this point - even though I was in my 20s and no longer a crazy goth chick, I still like weird. Just tasteful-weird (aka - I have retired my black vinyl dress coated with rainbow micro-glitter).
This blouse is so wonderfully comfortable. It is the perfect top to wear when I am feeling tired and lazy and a little pudgy. It is unstructured, so it is light and loose and hides all those little fleshy lumps that you might feel insecure about. The body of the blouse in made of a wonderfully silky velvet that floats and dances with you.
Normally I am not one for asymmetrical things, but it doesn’t bother me on this top. I think that had the spider web sleeve been on both sides, I would fe ...

My Apologies?
2007-05-31 13:32:09
…for not posting yesterday. I recently went into production on a new TV show, so my hours have been crazy. Yesterday I worked a 20 hour day and I just could not get to the computer to put up an article. I promise you there will be one today.

Blox Designs Fuels My Love for Chunky Jewelry
2007-05-29 18:26:59
Who would have thought that I would love chunky, heavy jewelry so much? In all other aspects of fashion, I seek out far slimmer pieces. I hate big, clunky shoes, and I avoid clothing that isn’t sleek and svelte. The big pieces of jewelry bring a nice counter-balance.
Blox Designs is a perfect example of chunky jewelry. The designers, Magdalena Kubik and Lori Reynolds, both come from interior design backgrounds; subsequently their designs incorporate tiles made of glass and metal. The focus is on clean, modern lines. Many of their pieces remind me of throw pillows, accent shelves, decorative mirrors, and other home accents.
The large black pendant is one of my favorites, but I still have not figured out what to wear it with. The large size requires either a very open neck, or a very high neck. Because of the precise 90 degree angles, I find it looks a bit out-of-place against a scoop neck. The metal-backed tile makes it glitter; the silver circles soften the hard angles ...

The Immaculate Complexion by Edie Bloom
2007-05-28 12:51:19
I should preface this review by stating that is “chick lit” and I have never in my life read a chick lit novel. Not Bergdorf Blondes, not The Devil Wears Prada, not Shopaholic. I have never even read a Jane Austen book. I am not really a chick lit kind of gal.The Immaculate Complexion by Edie Bloom was a painless way to ease into the genre.
The novel follows Marnie, a down-to-earth, vintage wearing, organic loving girl who is temping at LeVigne, one of the biggest cosmetics companies in the world. She doesn’t fit in with the anorexic, Botoxed, superficial girls who rule the place. But she has to stick it out so she can save enough money to launch her own, 100% natural cosmetic line with best friend (and full-blown hippie) Holly. Along the way, Marnie must balance a promising relationship with cheese-phile Paul.
The book is a quick, entertaining read. Perfect for lazy summer days by the pool. I love the way the LeVigne girls are portrayed - hilariously stereot ...

Designing Diva Cuts Through My OCD Shell, Into My Heart
2007-05-25 19:07:35
I admit it: I’m a little OCD. When I got this necklace from Designing Diva, I was a little confused. Was it broken? Why were there hoops only on half? It finally got through my head that it was supposed to be asymmetrical. Ok, I thought, I’ll give it a shot.
I tried it on and fell in love with it. All of my OCD quirks flew right out the window. I paired it with my Proenza Schouler Palm Tree Dress, and it was a hit. The necklace feels like Palm Beach. The gold and turquoise go together beautifully, and the necklace screams summer to me. Worn with that Proenza Schouler dress, I wanted to go party on the beach all night.
The Designing Diva is Randi-Sue, a self-taught jewelry maker who works out of her home in Texas. “Experimenting without rules is so liberating,” she says. She doesn’t look at anything as “wasted material;” instead, it is a “unique design opportunity.” In her “former life” she was a clinical sc ...

Doctor Who? Why Does He Need So Much Scarf?
2007-05-24 19:33:29
I adore my father-in-law but… well… he’s a geek, in every sense of the word. He knows he is a geek; he embraces it.
One of his geeky indulgences is Dr. Who, a British sci-fi show that has been going on, in several incarnations, for about as long as I have been alive. One of the good doctor’s trademarks is his obscenely long, wide, 1970s-inspired scarves. So when I first took up knitting, my husband immediately found a Dr. Who scarf pattern for me to make. He was worried that it might be too much for me to take on as one of my first projects, but it was just a basic garter stitch, and I was damned cocky. How hard could it be?
Pretty close, I’d say. What do you think?
We bought the recommended amount of yarn ($100 worth) and I set to work in October. The plan was that it would be a gift for father-in-law’s November birthday. I knew I wouldn’t be anywhere near finished with it by then, but at least I could announce it and show him my pr ...

Isabella Costumerie Lace & Pinstripe Corset
2007-05-23 15:42:46
This was the third corset I ever bought, purchased from Isabella Costumerie. I found out about this corset maker via one of my favorite bands, Rasputina. They are notorious for always wearing well-constructed corsets during their shows.
I was lucky enough to find this ready-to-wear in her closeouts, for a third of what a corset of this quality would cost (one day, I will have a custom made corset). After receiving this corset, I suspect Isabella Costumerie will be the place I go for corsets. The construction is just beautiful. Well made, even stitching, well-placed stays that don’t dig into the hips (Shaping = good. Goudging = bad). The fabrics are very good quality. It gives beautiful shaping, and once broken in, is incredibly comfortable. Yes, comfortable!
Until I can afford a corset from Mr. Pearl, Isabella Costumerie is the corset-maker for me.

LondonEdge Exhibition Promises the Best in Alternative Fashion
2007-05-22 18:01:22
I was recently clued in to this awesome (or awesome-looking) trade show in New York. I am heartbroken that I cannot attend, so I am going to blog about it instead.
LENY is the New York edition of LondonEdge, a UK show that started in 2000. 2007 will be LondonEdge’s Stateside debut. According to the website, it grew out of a lack of niche exhibition outlets. Generally speaking, this is “alternative wear” - there are so many sub-niches and sub-sub-niches represented here: punk, cyberpunk, goth, club, rockabilly, psychobilly, industrial, biker, glam rock, techno, hot rod, and more. I have a special place in my heart for people who have the creativity and the patience to dress like a walking piece of art.
Better-known labels such as Demonia and Sailor Jerry plan to be in attendance, alongside newcomers such as Felon Means Business and Heavy Metal MFG. One in particular, Anemone Bags, caught my attention. Stay tuned for a full article about the company, and you wil ...

Ahh? Zappos
2007-05-21 14:34:18
Every girl I know (and half the guys) know and love Zappos.com. It is simply the best internet shoe store - and possibly better than any brick-and-mortar shoe store. They have an enormous selection, free and fast shipping, and the best customer service around.
I was in Vegas this weekend, and I didn’t do much shopping (which my wallet appreciated). Friday night while picking up our car from the valet, I noticed a little flyer on the valet desk. 10% off your purchase from the Zappos.com Outlet. NOT Zappos.com. Zappos.com OUTLET. Brick-and-mortar. Real life. It was just outside of Vegas, and happened to be on our way home to Los Angeles.
My husband had promised we could make one shopping stop on the way home. I gave up my trip to the State Line outlet mall (there is a Neiman Marcus and Kenneth Cole outlet not too far from us at home) in order to visit Zappos’s real-life home.
I was bursting with excitement as we looked for the store. We found it, and I almost tuck ...
