Scent to Sleep Promises An End To Insomnia
2007-12-11 12:57:30
I have suffered from insomnia for my entire life. From the time I learned to walk, until age 6, I was a sleepwalker. The sleepwalking gave way to chronic insomnia. It’s one of those things I have just gotten used to. On average I get about 5-6 hours of sleep a night, but that is often restless sleep punctuated by occasional night terrors. When I am in production, I will sometimes get only 3-4 hours sleep. I flat-out refuse to take sleeping pills, but I am always welcome to new, external techniques to help me sleep. Scent to Sleep promises an end to insomnia with their linen sprays. I tried out the Luscious Lavender scent (it is also available in Decadent Green Apple Vanilla). I have long been aware of the relaxing properties of lavender, but often find the scent to be overwhelming. The Luscious Lavender spray does not suffer from this. It is mild, blended with peppermint oil, and not overpowering. It smelled nice, but I don’t think it is going to cure my insomnia ...
Lagerfeld Confidential
2007-12-06 14:37:01
Last night I had the pleasure of seeing the new documentary Lagerfeld Confidential. Director Rodolphe Marconi was allowed unprecedented access to the designer who reinvented the Chanel label. Lagerfeld is witty and matter-of-fact without being arrogant. The documentary is subtitled, which I normally champion. But in this case, I wish they had dubbed it - I wanted to ogle the clothing more! Some highlights: Lagerfeld’s first show for Chanel, Spring 1983. The shoulder pads are bulky, the suits are very 1980s, and Karl’s hair is darker than his signature sunglasses. The “black coat show”, where the models walk a multi-level runway in the round, wearing spectacular black coats. When all the models are present, they shed their coats to reveal fabulous, brightly colored frocks. It made me want to stand and applaud. Karl speaks openly about sex, his childhood, his mother, and his career. A peek into Karl’s library, where he stores an entire Barnes & ...

Pamper Your Sexy Beast
2007-12-05 15:14:56
I’ve had dogs since I was three years old. I love them like a part of the family, but I never forget that they are not people. I do not dress them up in sweaters, nor do I carry them around in a purse (in fact, I have always had large dogs). When I was asked to try out the signature fragrance by Sexy Beast, my husband rolled his eyes a little. But who doesn’t want their dog to smell good? The press released promised it was 100% vegan and 100% safe, so I gave it a shot. My “test subject” was Keegan, a 10-month-old rescued mutt. We sampled the fragrance, a unisex blend of vanilla-infused musk, bergamot, patchouli, mandarin, and nutmeg. The instructions were simple: pour into hands, rub into fur. No problem - any chance to play with my puppy! I added some to my hands and went towards Keegan. Initially he seemed a little frightened of my hands - he backed away as my scented hands came near him. But as soon as I started rubbing his back and belly, he for ...

A Little Lingerie Company
2007-12-04 14:57:34
I have a fashion confession to make. It is a dark secret that I have held for years. It has tainted my soul and I must get it off my chest. I hate thongs. Hate them. Never wear them. I just don’t like walking around with a permanent wedgie. I can’t be the only one, right? But I heard that A Little Lingerie Company’s vintage-inspired G-strings were particularly comfy, so I decided to give them a shot. You know, in the name of fashion. I’m glad I did. The wispy little G-string is light as air - I was able to forget I was wearing it! Though I don’t think I will ever give up my boy shorts, at least I know where to turn should I need a little something. A Little Lingerie Company hand makes all their lingerie, which includes bralettes, camisoles, and slips. The pieces are a bit flimsy, but their bralettes and full slips include soft bust support without the discomfort of underwires. What girl couldn’t use a little lift? The lingerie is vintage ...

Bordeaux Spring 2008 Collection
2007-11-30 14:24:58
Not long ago, I attended the Bordeaux Spring fashion show. I must say, I was disappointed. The theme was A Night At The Opera, but the collection lacked the glamour, the sophistication, the theatricality of opera clothing. The collection was rather bland. Bright colors abound, but the shapes were blousy and unflattering. There was an alarming number of bubble skirts (I thought we were done with those). I did like the long silk dress at the end, but even with that, I was underwhelmed by the collection. Have a look, decide for yourself. Share This ...

Glamorosi Jewelry for your Glamorous-i Gal
2007-11-29 17:55:14
Girls love pearls. But let’s face it: traditional strands of pearls can be a little stuffy. They are hard to wear every day without looking like Donna Reed… or Lisa Simpson. But Glamorosi has you covered. This self-taught jeweler (Glamorosi is a play on her last name) has created a vibrant, fun way to wear pearls. Using freshwater pearls on intricately wrapped sterling wire, the pearls are given a modern cascade look. Besides pearls, Glamorosi jewelry comes in a variety of materials: Swarovski crystal, glass, lucite, wood, mother of pearl, precious and semi-precious gems, and more. Some vintage, some new, all lovely. Each piece comes with care instructions and a description of how each piece is made. Plus, all jewelry is pre-boxed - just in time for the holidays and perfect for people like me, who are all toes when it comes to gift wrapping. Glamorosi jewelry can be purchased at glamorosi.etsy.com Share This ...

Book Review: “Tokyo Look Book”
2007-11-27 11:41:06
Tokyo has always been a source of phenomenal fashion. From haute couture to goth, from trendy to Anime, just about any outfit you can imagine can be seen on the street of Tokyo - and a whole lot more. Combine that with the current popularity of street style (where photographers snap pictures of great outfits they find on random pedestrians), and you have a fun and fascinating read: The Tokyo Look Book. The Tokyo Look Book is a wonderful collection of these looks. With photos taken on the streets, at clubs, at the mall, and on the subway, every conceivable look is captured. The book is divided into five broad chapters: trendy teens, subversive, youth street fashion, high fashion women, and working men. I find the subversive section the most fascinating, as it covers goths, punks, lolitas, cosplayers, cyber, and more - all those wild, wacky outfits that most people associate with Halloween. But this isn???t just a photo book. Each chapter has an introduction, explaining some of th ...

Erin Lillies Jewelry is a Family Affair
2007-11-26 15:20:19
Heather Donahue is a computer programmer by day, self-taught jewelry designer by night. “I’ve recently turned to jewelry as my creative outlet. I’m striving to make this a full-time thing one day,” she says. This piece is made with African jade and sterling silver chain mail. “It was inspired by the Toto song, ‘Africa,’” Heather says. She talks about her method: “It sounds kinda funny, but I started the design process by just looking at the beads. Getting familiar with it’s shape. I knew I wanted to make a bracelet with it, so I wanted to get a feel of how it might lay on the wrist. I also wanted to incorporate some chainmail, but wanted to use a weave that would balance out the width of the jade. That’s where the bubble weave came in. It’s a nice weave width-wise to compliment the jade, but also light and airy enough to make a fantastic bracelet. From there, it was just a matter of putting them together. ...
