VPOD: Bringing Sexy Back
2007-08-14 09:05:00
Today's VPOD is a great example that proves you don't have to bare a whole bunch of skin to still look incredibly sexy. Sweater dresses are hot for fall and you can see why. They're a great way to look and feel very feminine while still being covered up enough for an office. This is an authentic 1940s sweater set by Tony Berman in a sizzling red virgin wool. The skirt is long--below the knee. The sweater top is accented with just a touch of sparkling rhinestones and pearls and the matching belt will help you create that coveted hourglass shape. It's a sexy find for a vintage fashionista! Available at Peek a Boo.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Absolute Luksus/Amey
2007-08-12 10:13:00
Tzaims Luksus is known for his imaginative and original use of color in woven and printed fabrics that he produced for American fashion designers in the 60s and 70s. This Burke-Amey 1970s belted A-line coat is stunning with its vibrant but dark undulating lines with lighter open areas of extraordinarily bizarre floral motifs and contrasting bold blue trim. The fabric Ronald Amey chose for this coat was a Tzaims Luksus warp-printed jacquard designed and produced by Tzaims Luksus, who often worked two to three years onthe design, construction and presentation of his fabrics before offering them to any fashion designer. Per correspondence with Tzaims Luksus, the fabric on this coat was chosen by Ronald Amey from the Tzaims Luksus c. 1970 fabric collection Tzaims manufactured in Como, Italy and also selected by Yves St. Laurent in Paris and James Galanos in California. It's a rare and fabulous find for a vintage collector!(Note that per the Tzaims Luksus Archive Collection Foundation Lib ...

VPOD: Stunnng Lilli Ann
2007-08-10 08:54:00
Lilli Ann was founded by Adolf Schuman in 1933 and named after his wife, Lillian. And although his garments were mass-produced for the ready-to-wear market, they are held in high esteem by collectors because of their distinctive quality, craftsmanship, and fabrics, many of which were imported from France.Even better, the Lilli Ann label provides a huge "bang for the buck," tending to hold its value over time and offering price tags that should be much higher based on quality. Just one glance at today's VPOD and you can almost feel an "haute couture" vibe, can't you? It looks very expensive but can be had for a lot less than you might think (and for not much more than a plain ol' wool coat at your local department store). This 1960s Lilli Ann outfit incorporates several fall trends with its bright color, cape detail and fur trim. The little black dress with luscious fur hem has a unique cut-out back and can carry its own at any cocktail soiree. The matching coat is magnificant w ...

VPOD: Poppy Love
2007-08-09 08:58:00
Poppies have long been used as a symbol of sleep (remember Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz?). Yet colorful poppies create some of the most eye-catching prints! Marimekko loves them and they appeared in this season's Oscar de la Renta spring collection. If you're looking to add some poppy punch to your closet, look no further than today's VPOD.This 1970s vintage maxi is unlabeled but full of style. Wear it with espadrilles and a tote by day, with heels and a clutch at night. It's flowery fun for a vintage fashionista!Available at Antique Dress.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Raise the Volume
2007-08-08 08:45:00
A structured dress with a hint of fullness in the skirt or the sleeves seems to be on the Fall 2007 Must-Have List in every major fashion magazine. Of course, pulling off this look requires excellent tailoring and design so the best examples carry labels like Galliano for Dior, Lanvin and Louis Vuitton. You can, however, find vintage alternatives to the modern dresses that walked down the fall runways. You're looking for soft volume in a structured shape--like in today's VPOD.This vintage 1970s dress by Roger Milot for Fred Perlberg is stunning with its rich and vibrant paisley wool. The full skirt has large pleats and there's sequin detail on the long sleeves. It's a runway-worthy find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Mary Moore Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Boot-ing Up
2007-08-07 09:17:00
It isn't quite time to pack up the sandals yet, but it is time to maybe start thinking about your fall purchases. And if you only have room in your budget for one piece of footwear this season, then consider an ankle boot. Something like today's VPOD perhaps?Yes, the ankle boot is back and I just love this utilitarian piece. Sooo comfy with pants and yet so fashionable with some textured tights when you decide to wear a skirt or dress instead. These vintage brown ankle boots are by Xavier Denaud and feature a high--make that very high--four-inch heel. They'll look awesome with jeans, a fall sweater dress, a little plaid skirt and so much more. So maybe they're not utilitarian enough for an ice storm or blizzard but that still leaves lots of days in between for these boots to do some walking. They're the perfect footwear for a vintage fashionista!Available at Archive Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing ...

VPOD: A Pretty Peplum
2007-08-06 09:39:00
A fashion designer I met at a recent wedding has been interviewing for jobs all over LA and of course, our conversation turned to Spring 2008. What can we look forward to? One thing she mentioned was that we'd see flared waists and peplums again. So...maybe we will and maybe we won't but you can choose to take fashion into your own hands and create your own waist-oriented looks with this fabulous vintage belt.Pure 1980s, it features black polka dots and a flirty peplum cut with an enamel buckle. It's a great little addition to a clingy black dress or white leggings, adding a playful element that says you don't take yourself too seriously. It's a fun little find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Enoki World.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Hail Halston
2007-08-03 09:10:00
Roy Halston Frowick was born in Des Moines, Iowa and raised in Evanston, Indiana--not the hubs of the fashion world by any means--yet somehow he went on to build a fashion empire. And though it might have spiraled a bit out of control in the later years, when his name was licensed and found on just about everything it seemed, he remains on the list of masterful American fashion designers.Today's VPOD expresses Halston's beautiful draping ability and his sense of minimalism that inspires the wearer to add her own personal style to the outfit. Tie on a fox scarf, drape that dangling pendant neklace, layer a silk turtleneck underneath--just not all at the same time please! It's a welcoming palette for a vintage fashionista!Available at Revival Boutique.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Gucci Gal
2007-08-02 08:55:00
Warning: There are plenty of counterfeit designer handbags out there! Usually created in the most popular styles, some of them can be really great copies--hardly distinguishable from the real thing at first glance and sometimes even at a second or third glance. But you'll never find me carrying one!No, I'm not a snob. There are lots of legitimate reasons not to succumb to the temptation of a fake Fendi on your arm. Here are my top three:1. The sale of counterfeits has been linked to terrorism and organized crime.2. The holders of copyrights, trademarks and patents should receive the profits owed to them for their work rather than criminals. 3. Counterfeits cost Americans jobs. (And often their work is replaced by sweatshop or even forced child labor.)So as a consumer how do you protect yourself?First and foremost, buy from reputable sellers! Today's VPOD features a fabulous 1970s Gucci satchel that was recreated by Tom Ford as part of his "custom line" of vintage Gucci handba ...

VPOD: I Dream of Pucci
2007-08-01 08:54:00
There are certainly more coveted labels if you plan to sell your vintage collection at an auction house someday (Fortuny, Poiret and Worth come to mind), but when it comes to contemporary vintage--those treasured items that we wear out in the world to work and to play--Pucci is still one of the most-popular labels. And there are plenty of Puccis to choose from although some--like today's VPOD--just take your breath away.Talk about being ahead of your time! This beautiful fitted velvet jacket was designed in the 1960s and still retains all of its eye-catching charm. I love the black! Somehow it just offsets the pink and watermelon swirls perfectly and gives a girl like me a whole new way to spice up my closet of little black dresses, long black skirts, short black skirts, black shorts, black leggings, black wool pants, black leather pants...you get the idea. It's an ultra-chic find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Posh Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size ...

VPOD: Fashionable Fringe
2007-07-30 08:12:00
By the time she retired in the mid-1980s, Bonnie Cashin had been awarded two dozen awards by the fashion industry. An American design icon, she designed for the active woman who required a minimum of fuss without a lot of "gilt and glamour." Today's VPOD features one of her famous designs. This 1960s suede dress has a "Bonnie Cashin for Sills" label and features her signature toggle closures. Three playful fringe tiers set off the dropped waist and get this, the dress is lined in bright pink silk! It's a fashionable find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Couture Allure Vintage Fashion.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Chain Gang
2007-07-27 08:24:00
I'm a member of a special little Chain Gang--no, not the type you see on the highways in orange jumpsuits near jails--I'm referring to those of us who adore Hermes and the often-seen chains in Hermes prints. This 1970s silk jersey Hermes is the creme de la creme. White and gold chains abound over a navy background. Oh, and it was recently worn on the set of a film by a famous Hollywood celebrity. It's an always-in-style classic for a vintage fashionista!Available at Prototype Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Seasonless Skirt
2007-07-26 08:23:00
I noticed there were Back-to-School ads in last Sunday's newspaper already--a timely reminder that these hot summer days won't last forever. Now that I live in Los Angeles, the "changing of the closets" isn't quite the chore it was when I lived in Ohio, but there is still a change of seasons, even out here. Of course, some items, like today's VPOD, are able to do double duty and can stay in your closet from July through October.I just love the deep rich earthy tones on this darling vintage skirt. In sandal weather, you can top it with a tank and a wide belt and come cooler temps, add brown tights and a navy blue sweater (or blue tights and a brown sweater for that matter!)And the best news is that all this versatility comes at a true thrift-store price. It's a no-guilt treat for a vintage fashionista!Available at Parish Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Seeing Stripes
2007-07-25 09:04:00
I was at a private estate sale last evening and noticed a rack of beautiful fur coats, many of them spotted and striped fur from currently endangered species. Just wanted to remind everyone that in general, it is illegal to buy or sell garments made from endangered species even if they are considered old, used or vintage. The laws related to this can get quite complicated. While there are some exceptions for vintage items with proof of age, some state laws trump the federal law in strictness. The best rule of thumb is just don't do it! If you get caught, you could be punished with five years in prison and a $250,000 fine--double that if you're a business. No reputable furriers deal in endangered species and you shouldn't either--although it is perfectly fine to get that old leopard, ocelot, tiger or monkey coat restyled into a more contemporary look. And keep in mind that you can get the fashionable look of animal prints without even wearing fur. Take a look at today's VPOD.Thi ...

VPOD: Go With Green
2007-07-24 08:37:00
Today I just want to remind everyone that you can build a fabulous vintage wardrobe without spending a fortune or amassing a closetful full of designer names. Because so many women in previous decades made their own clothes or had their clothes made for them by talented dressmakers, there are fabulous vintage items just waiting for new homes.Take today's VPOD for instance. Its Asian label is certainly not being coveted and bid up by the likes of Pucci collectors on eBay, but it is fabulous! The deep emerald green is set off with brown cuffs and a little tie belt. The jacket has amazing lines and oh what I could do with that skirt sans jacket! It's a no-name wonder for a vintage fashionista!Available on eBay.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list.
