VPOD: Tarty Tartan
2007-09-06 08:02:00
The Scots love their tartans and boy do they take them seriously! They began naming and registering official clan tartans way back in 1815. Each clan has at least one distinct tartan with a unique sequence of colors and shades that are used for kilts, ties and other garments. The good news is you don't need to be a member of a clan or even have one Scottish bone in your body to wear today's smashing VPOD. This vintage taffeta gown by Francesco features a red-and-black tartan print with lots of pretty details like its rhinestone buttons. But it's the amazing bias cut skirt with almost a 17-foot sweep that will guarantee a grand entrance for any hostess. It's a perfect holiday dress for a vintage fashionista!Available at Marilyn's Midnight Glamour.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: A Foxy Trigere
2007-09-05 08:21:00
Any way you measure Pauline Trigere's career--from the age of 10, when she first started using a sewing machine, or a few years later when she made her first dress, or from 1942 when she started her own house--you end up with over 50 years of fabulous design. An avid collector of turtles, a traditional Chinese symbol of longevity, she herself lived a long creative life, passing away at the age of 93 in June 2002.Today's VPOD features one of her amazing designs. This timeless ensemble includes a taupe dress with sash and a matching cape with a full six-inch hem of luscious fox fur. It's so luxurious it should come with its own limousine and butler! It's a stunning find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Unique Boutique NYC.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Playing with Prints
2007-09-04 09:19:00
Well, Labor Day's over and that means no more white, right? I mean, growing up, that's what I was told. You could only wear white between May 31 and Labor Day. Of course, these days, there really aren't any hard and fast rules. You can wear white this week or next and not have to worry about being written up by some sort of Fashion Police. But as the weather chills in the weeks to come, some prints, like today's VPODs, will look much more appropriate than say, Lilly Pulitzer florals. All three of these vintage dresses have deeper, richer fall colors and are perfect for layering. Add a cardigan sweater or one of this season's wide belts. Pull on tights and boots. Or throw on a corduroy or velvet blazer. These aren't designer masterpieces but with each dress carrying a price tag of less than $15, you'll have plenty of extra to spend on playful accessories. They're fun and inexpensive fall finds for a vintage fashionista!Available at Parish.(To receive the VPOD via email wit ...
VPOD: Coated with Cranberry
2007-08-31 08:16:00
You can walk into any Goodwill or local thrift shop and probably find a rack of plain ol' vintage coats that are ho-hum and ordinary on any given day of the week. The same holds true for a quick browse on eBay. But if you have patience and wait it out, you are sure to eventually spy something with a little extra pizzazz, a little je ne sais quoi. It may be hard to describe but you'll know it when you see it--like today's VPOD from the 1960s.First you'll notice the deep, rich cranberry wool. Then you'll run your eyes over the incredible lines and that interesting 1/2 cape design and think..."interesting, very interesting." Finally you'll pick out the little details: a lush velvet collar and back belt, the contour cut on the front vertical pockets, the dark buttons on the sleeves. You'll hold your breath as you cautiously look at the price tag...then breathe a sigh of relief that it's well within your budget at under $200. Yep, this is the one and wasn't it well worth the ...
VPOD: Pleasing Pleats
2007-08-30 07:22:00
Fortuny was the King of Pleats and most costume museums have one of his pleated gowns in their collection. According to one source, his pleats were created by evaporation when wet and folded silk was laid on heated tubes. Not sure what method was used to get the amazing pleats in today's VPOD, but Bill Blass certainly appears to be channeling the master here! This Bliss Blass design is from 1975-1985. And I just love so many things about this dress! First, let's talk about its yummy color combo of melon and pink. Then, it's tea length. It keeps it understated enough to wear in the afternoon or during the cocktail hour yet it is most definitely elegant enough for evening, too. And finally, we have those amazing pleats! They do take center stage, don't they? It's a breathtaking find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Heaven of Gowns.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Bikini Babe
2007-08-29 08:08:00
Where I grew up, at least in my family, there was no swimming in lakes after August 15 because of some old wive's tale that I never quite understood. But with Labor Day fast approaching, summer swim days for a lot of folks are numbered. So why not make one last splash with today's VPOD.This early 1960s bikini has both a patriotic and nautical feel with its bold red and white stripes, blue trim and gold anchor hardware. Plus the boy cut bottoms and full coverage top show just the right amount of skin--not too sexy but not too reserved either. It's an all-American find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Senorita Hollywood.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Groovin' Grey
2007-08-28 09:53:00
I'd love this fabulous little Lillie Ann jacket even if it wasn't this season's hottest shade. But the fact that it's grey too--well, it's a double whammy!Add in the cream piping and buttons, the nubby tweed fabric, the asymmetrical collar and that fabulous form-fitting cut and you can see why Lilli Ann pieces are so coveted by their owners. Style like this is always in fashion! It's a groovin' grey find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Showdown Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: A Design Starr
2007-08-27 09:01:00
Talent, it seems, often runs in families. The Starr's are just one shining example. Both Frank, the father, and Malcolm, the son, produced some fabulous garments beginning in the 1930s and continuing to the 1970s.Today's VPOD is an example from the Frank Starr label in the 1950s. Very feminine jet black tulle covers black sillk faille. Lovely lace appliques adorn the bodice and a black satin sash fashions into a bow in the back. It's an ultra-feminine LBD for a vintage fashionista!Available at Kitty Girl Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Definitely Dior
2007-08-24 09:27:00
Christian Dior once said that he could have produced all of his collections in black or white. "Color cannot transform a failure of a dress into a success," he said. For him, cut was the ultimate star and he was the king of cut, shaking up the world with his New Look and then going on to formulate the Oblique line, the Oval line, the Profile line, the Princess line, the H line, the A line and the Y line. Today's VPOD features a black wool coat from his Autumn/Winter 1958 collection. It's lined in black taffeta and that extremely large collar can be put up to protect your head in the cold. It's a divine Dior look for a vintage fashionista! VPOD: Belted Beauty
2007-08-23 08:59:00
There's someone in the blogiverse who's blogging about how he's paring his life down to 1,000 items. That's it--1,000 items total. And while I'm all for simplifying and not living to excess, it would be much more difficult for me to accomplish this same task because of my passion for vintage shoes and handbags and belts and scarves and...well, the list goes on and on and I haven't even begun counting books and fashion magazines!Take today's VPOD. This 1970s Yves Saint Laurent studded suede belt packs in a whole lot of style in just a tiny bit of space. Who doesn't have room for just one more belt?! Designed by Bonnie Cashin in the early 1970s, it's known as the Double Header becuase of the two kisslock pockets on each end. VPOD: A Blast of Blass
2007-08-21 09:34:00
Bill Blass is an American fashion icon with quite an impressive resume that includes being a three-time winner of the Coty American Fashion Critics Award, the recipient of the first lifetime achievement award from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and one of the founding members of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. He was so successful designing for Maurice Retner on Seventh Avenue in New York, that he was one of the first designers to see his name on a label. His eye for design is legendary--just look at today's VPOD.This 1980s cocktail dress is very ooh-la-la. Give someone else bright yellow silk with yards of black lace and you could end up with a gaudy mess but Blass is able to create a garment that oozes sophistication. It's a little blast of Blass for a vintage fashionista!Available at Vintage Martini.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Back in Black
2007-08-17 09:36:00
Your winter coat is probably one of the most-worn items in your wardrobe, right? So it makes sense to find something classic and timeless (so you'll still feel in style next year), something that has great quality (so it will last more than one winter) and something you love (so you can squeal with delight when you pull it from storage in 2008 and 2009 and 2010).Today's VPOD fits the bill on all accounts! This 1950s wool coat has fabulous lines and details (like the nipped waist and gold-and-black buttons) and all this style comes in at a price tag under $250! Who needs a designer label when you can get style like this at an affordable price! It's a cold weather treat for a vintage fashionista!Available at Woodland Farms Antiques.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Golden Gloves
2007-08-16 08:30:00
Gloves are one of this season's must-have fall accessories. They appeared on just about every fall runway and it's not about utility--even if it doesn't get cold enough to throw a snowball where you live, chances are you'll see women wearing gloves in a few months! This year, besides the standard leather, velvet, or suede, we've seen lace, cotton, silk and sheer gloves plus bright colors, beading, feathers, and fur. It's a glove bonanza! And you can find fabulous vintage versions of all of these pieces. Here's some info you might find helpful:Glove Size: To determine your glove size, measure around the widest part of your dominant hand, excluding your thumb. The measuring tape should be sitting on top of your knuckles. Gentle bend your hand into a fist, read the measuring tape and that's your glove size: Size 6 (XS) up to 10 (XL) (although sometimes gloves are "one size fits all" if the fabric has a lot of stretch).Glove Length: Glove length is measured in "buttons," deriv ...
VPOD: The Little Beaded Sweaer (LBS)
2007-08-15 08:55:00
I absolutely adore the look of a vintage little beaded sweater (LBS) with jeans. It has so much more panache than a t-shirt and still gives off a casual weekend feel. Of course, you can take that same LBS and pair it with a pencil skirt for the office. Or wear it in place of a blouse under a suit jacket or blazer. And now--now!--is the time to scoop up these beautiful little treasures from eBay and vintage clothing sites.Yes, Helen Bond Carruthers may be the most-coveted label, but there are plenty of unknown masterpieces out there as well. And since the best sweaters are made of cashmere or lambswool rather than acrylic, be sure to store your gem properly to keep away those pesky moths. If you're not the type to purchase archival boxes, at the very least you can protect your sweaters in a zippered pillow cover.Today's VPOD features a 1950s hand-beaded, silk-lined lambswool cardigan to inspire you. It's a pretty purchase for a vintage fashionista!Available at Polkadots and Moonb ...
