VPOD: Pin One On
2007-10-05 08:40:00
You know me...if everyone's wearing it, that means it's time for me to move on to something else. And I have to admit I'm done with the whole brooch thing. Been there, done that. This season I plan to add pizazz with vintage animal and insect pins. I guarantee they'll spark conversation:Handsome man in elevator:"Excuse me, is that a...lizard you're wearing?!"Me:"This? Oh no, it's a gecko actually..."Of course, the answer could be a lobster, a moth, a turtle, a fish, a monkey, a snake, or a grasshopper depending on the day of the week. These vintage pins come in all shapes and sizes, both plain and fancy. Take today's VPOD. This little guy mixes pink and black enamel with rhinestones. Two suggestions though. First, match the weight of the pin to your garment to avoid any fabric damage. Larger, heavier pins should be worn on more durable fabrics like wool. Second, use your imagination. Pins don't have to be worn on just a lapel. Pin one to a hat, a plain ol' clutch ...
VPOD: Boot Up
2007-10-04 09:49:00
If you're anything like me then you already have a pair of black knee-high boots in your closet that are a staple during the upcoming months. So this year why not expand your horizons, think outside the box, shake things up a bit with...color. Choose between a 1960s pair of Herbert Levine crinkled plum vinyl or a pair of 1960s electric blue faux snakeskin. Either is bound to add a dash of excitement to your wardrobe in a really fun way. They're a great way to boot up if you're a vintage fashionista!Available at Enoki World.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Bright and Lacy
2007-10-03 07:56:00
One of the favorite parts of my job is talking with women (or men) who are interested in selling a collection of vintage clothing. Sometimes I'll reminisce with the woman herself, hearing stories of where each and every piece was purchased or worn. Sometimes it's the children or grandchildren relating the stories. Often, especially with evening wear, there is an emotional attachment to a dress or gown or coat. Very often it's associated with a particular and important event in someone's life. And I believe that when you have a chance to own these items and know their history, it's an extra special treat. For example, today's eye-catching blouse is from the collection of Renata Cicioni of Buenos Aires, Argentina--the former wife of a count, the widow of a prominent landowner and horsebreeder and a well-known social figure and philanthropist. The yellow silk features hand-stitched black lace and a low slung belt at the hips. And it's just one of many beautiful pieces being o ...
VPOD: Hi Ho Silver!
2007-10-02 08:15:00
I wonder if Yves Saint Laurent found his inspiration for today's VPOD from the ballet. I remember wearing cozy wrap-around sweaters over my leotards when I was a young ballerina practicing her releves. Of course, this little number is waaaay more glamorous.Designed in the 1970s for the Rive Gauche ready-to-wear line, this wrap blouse features a glittery lame chiffon with fluttery ruffles at the neckline and sleeves. Done in a fabulous silvery grey and perfect with this season's high-waists, it's sheer...it's sexy...it's gorgeous! And it's a perfect find for the vintage fashionista!Available at Vintage-A-Peel.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: The Golden Age of Couture
2007-10-01 08:33:00
Until January 6, 2008, the Victoria & Albert Museum is featuring an exhibit entitled "The Golden Age of Couture: Paris and London 1947-1957." It focuses on British and Parisian couture during the years that Christian Dior once referred to as "the Golden Age of fashion." It explains the production of couture in depth and features the work of such greats as Balenciaga, Balmain, Givenchy, Amies and Chanel. And while you may not be able to hop off to merry ol' England to enjoy this dazzling array of ensembles, anyone can sit down with a cup of tea and browse the outstanding exhibit website. It's filled with lots of great information and fabulous photography plus extra goodies like e-postcards and a free dress pattern. It's a wonderful exhibit for a vintage fashionista!Check it out here.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Saffron Stunner
2007-09-27 08:30:00
Saffron is a sacred and auspicious color with many regarding it as the most holy color of all. It is often worn by Buddhist monks and is an important color in Hinduism as well. But, regardless of religious leanings, I think we can all agree it looks just stunning on today's VPOD.This 1950s chiffon party dress is an unlabeled treasure. I just love its pleated bodice with the off-center corset-like lacing and the way the hem dips from shorter in the front to longer in the back. It's a gorgeous find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Vintage Textile.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: I Feel Pretty, Oh So Pretty
2007-09-26 08:46:00
Before you know it the holiday party season will be here and you're probably going to react in one of two ways. You'll either eagerly look forward to invitations knowing you have the perfect party dress in your closet or you'll be running around like a maniac trying to find somthing to wear at the last minute. I've played out both of these scenarios over the years and I promise you the first one is a lot more fun!Today's VPOD features a fabulous 1950s cocktail dress that would be oh-so-right for so many holiday occasions. This sophisticated dress features a favorite label: "Harvey Berin designed by Karen Stark." It's a relatively simple yet elegant design--a fitted sheath with pleated cap sleeves and a rear view that includes a plunging back and floating panel. But because it's done in gorgeous ivory satin with a quite contemporary black-and-white print pattern, it looks fresh and modern although it has distinctly vintage roots. It's an oh-so-pretty find for a vintage fashi ...
VPOD: Coated in Style
2007-09-25 07:27:00
So far, in the last month, just popping in and out of Goodwill stores, I've found a 1970s Karl Lagerfeld blouse, a skimpy little 1980s Alaia dress, a Koos van den Akker skirt/blouse set and an amazing little 1960s sequin bolero jacket with mink trim. So many people I talk to are surprised at my success because when they try shopping in thrift stores, they never can find anything! So what's the trick? First, I always walk into a store believing I'll find at least one great item. (It doesn't always happen but keeping an open mind certainly helps!) Second, I don't waste time looking at every item and label because I want to find that one great item in 15 minutes or less. So, I scan. And what I'm generally looking for is...fabric. Quality clothes are made of quality fabric. It looks different and it feels different and once you learn to recognize it, you too will be scoring great thrift store finds.Take today's VPOD for example. This 1960s coat has an unusual slub fabric w ...
VPOD: Print It!
2007-09-24 08:20:00
I have to admit that I am a total sucker for prints even though I find them very difficult to wear. Because I'm petite, a print dress that looks great on a hangar will often completely overpower me when it's put on my tiny frame. And since I have to hem almost every long dress made, I have to be very conscious of the pattern at the hemline and make sure it will still work when it's taken up two inches. (How I envy you ladies that don't have this problem!)Still I love the search for that great print dress that works for me and today's VPOD stopped me in my tracks. First of all, it's one of my favorite colors: a deep coral red. This is the background for a interesting print pattern that isn't too limited and isn't too overdone but somehow is just right. Add a sexy keyhole neckline, high walking slit, a Paganne signature on the bodice plus those amazing bell sleeves and ding, ding, ding...we have a winner! It's a printed treasure for a vintage fashionista!Available at Vintag ...
VPOD: Scarf Season
2007-09-21 08:46:00
I wish I had today's VPOD with me yesterday on my return trip to LA. When I stepped off the plane at LAX, the temperature may have been in the 70s, but I swear that 737 felt like a refrigerator! Surely, you too can find an excuse to wear this beauty. Its an Yves Saint Laurent find from the 1970s and has a chic pattern of bold red, black and shimmering gold. VPOD: Mod Danglers
2007-09-11 22:59:00
The oldest earrings ever found by archeologists were discovered in Iraq and date back to about 2,500 B.C. Since then, earrings have had a rocky history, coming in and out of style based on the availablity of metals, the popularity of elaborate hairstlyes or wigs, and fashion trends like Elizabethan collars or bonnets. And don't think that pierced earrings are a modern invention--they've been around far longer than screw-on and clip-on backs, both of which weren't invented until the early 20th century.Today's VPOD features a pair of pierced drop earrings from the 1960s. Colorful plastic shapes combine with geometric gold pieces for a fresh and flirty contemporary look. They're mod little danglers for a vintage fashionista!Available at Posh Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: A Feathered Friend
2007-09-11 08:41:00
Feathers are one of the most complex structures found in nature with the remarkable size and color of some feathers still unexplained by science. And though feathers are replaced by birds periodically through molting, there have been times in our history when fashion's demand for feathers grew so extreme that it caused destruction to certain species. So, please wear feathers responsibly! Unfortunately, the horrors of factory-farming can be found in the feather industry as well as the meat industry. That's why I choose to wear older vintage items and refuse to purchase any new feathered goods without exploring how the manufacturer obtained its feathers.Today's VPOD features a beautiful 1960s cocktail dress of burned-out velvet with luscious feather trim at the neckline and hem. Feathers are a huge trend for fall and while new designs can be costly, you'll be pleased with the price tag on this vintage version. It's a wonderful feathered find for a vintage fashionista!Available at V ...
VPOD: Authentic Alligator
2007-09-10 09:59:00
Let's face it, we all have different budgets. What's inexpensive for one person is three months take-home pay for someone else. Sometimes, when it comes to fashion, you have to remind your wallet to think like Goldilocks. When searching for a vintage treat, it's important to find an object you love at a price that's not too cheap, not too expensive, but "just right" for you. Fortunately, there are options for every price range. Today's VPOD features three gorgeous vintage alligator handbags carring price tags from $250 to $995. They all have classic shapes, are in great condition and would look smashing with so many of your fall outfits. But regardless of what you decide to invest, you'll want to care for your bag properly so it will survive another decade or two. Here are some tips:*Store your bag in a cool, dry place. *Avoid water, heat and direct sunlight.*If your bag becomes wet, wipe it gently with a soft, dry absorbent cloth and then let it dry naturally.*Never use ...
VPOD: Z is for Zandra
2007-09-07 08:33:00
The Los Angeles Times once called Zandra Rhodes "London's lovely fashion lunatic," and I say the fashion world could use more just like her! Although she admitted to Vogue in 1978 that "...it's 15 percent talent and the rest is sloggin' your guts out," just look at what that fifteen percent talent and sloggin' guts creates!Today's VPOD showcases a Zandra Rhodes' design from the 1970s handmade in England. First and foremost a textile designer, Zandra's hand-painted dusty rose ribbons on black silk chiffon take center stage. But she didn't stop there. She added just the right amount of sequins and beads to the bodice, hem and waistline and topped it all off with a mini-bustle at the base of the spine. It's a masterpiece from a master for a vintage fashionista!Available at Frock.P.S. This site's just launched a new redesign so check it out!(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. Your inform ...
