Post World War II, Alfred Shaheen was the most prolific Hawaiian manufacturer and a quick look at eBay's completed listings shows a slew of his Hawaiian print sundresses and maxi dresses with his famous handprints. The vast majority of Shaheen's work would probably not be described as elegant but witness the exception--today's VPOD.This stunning ensemble consists of a lovely little cocktail dress and matching evening coat in a pastel blue and gold pattern reminiscent of Vincent Van Gogh's "The Starry Night." It's a classy find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Unique Boutique NYC.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Marvelous Mila
2007-07-18 09:29:00
Mila Schon was born in Yugoslavia in 1919 to wealthy parents who took her to Italy at a young age to escape the Communists. In 1958, she opened her own dressmaking shop in Milan. She had no experience other than personally wearing fabulous clothes by Balenciaga but that didn't stop her from designing incredibly classic outfits with outstanding style and tailoring.Today's VPOD features one of her designs from the 1960s. This double-breasted melon green wool coat looks oh-so-modern with its welted seams and big shiny buttons. And the color is bound to add a touch of brightness to cold overcast days. It's a wise winter choice for a vintage fashionista!Available at VintageCouture.com.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Houndstooth Heaven
2007-07-16 08:29:00
Bear Bryant, the late great University of Alabama football coach wore his trademark houndstooth cap at every game he coached. And this popular pattern, with its characteristic jagged tooth weave, is a hot fabric for fall showing up in a Valentino suit with wool fringe, a Catharine Malandrino shift and a Carmen Marc Valvo mink coat to name just a few.Today's VPOD features a charming little houndstooth patterned dress that's perfect for the office. Add some tights and knee-high boots or be a bit bolder and add a punch a color: an electric blue clutch or red-hot heels. And yes, it's within the budget of a working girl! It's a classic but contemporary find for a vintage fashionista.Available at K8tykat.com.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Pink Paris Punk
2007-07-15 10:34:00
Who says vintage can't look contemporary? This punky little silk-blend pink-and-black blouse is c. 1950s with a definite 80s vibe. I love the juxtaposition of the modern colors with the old-fashioned 19th-century European cafe scene with horsedrawn carriages. Plus the diagonal snap collar gives the impression of an awning--ingenious!It's a chic little find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Orlando Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Melon Marvel
2007-07-12 08:55:00
At first glance you might look at today's VPOD and think "Ceil Chapman" but think again. This absolutely gorgeous dress is the result of the combined talents of Harvey Berin (manufacturer) and Karen Stark (designer). From the 1940s through the 1970s they adapted Paris couture for the American market with fabulous results. Just look at this featured party dress! It's a scrumptious melon color that is perfect for showing off a summer tan. And the detail on the silk organza is incredible--pearls, rhinestones, sequins and embroidery that should be overkill but instead give a fresh, feminine feel. It's a charmer for a vintage fashionista!Available at Vintage Textile.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Mad Hatter
2007-07-11 08:55:00
When we were little girls, my mom used to make my sister and me wear babushkas, headscarves tied under our chins that were a reminder of our Eastern European ancestry. I hated them at the time (probably since I was the only girl in my class who had to wear one) but today they are making a fashion statement having paraded down the Fall 2007 runways. Headwear in general in back with many designers featuring veiled models, velvet turbans, feathers and bling. And hats are a great way to dip your toe into the vintage accessory pool. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to find as today's VPOD demonstrates. Choose from a tweed with fur accents, a red whimsey or an extraordinary turquoise feather turban--they're all from the 1960s and each one is less than $40!They're wonderful accessory choices for a vintage fashionista!Available at The Vintage Hat Box.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: The Batik Blues
2007-07-10 09:43:00
Batik is an Indonesian-Malay word which desribes a dye technique that is thought to be over a thousand years old. One reason for its immense popularity worldwide is its durability--the colors in batik are more resistant to wear and fading than those of painted or printed fabrics. Which means today's VPOD will look just as lovely years from now. This uber-cute batik skirt is made of cotton fabric and and is just the thing to take your mind off this summer heat wave. It's a fun and inexpensive treat for a vintage fashionista!Available at Mint & Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: The Art of Aldrich
2007-07-09 08:32:00
Sometimes it's the littlest decision that can change the direction of our lives. For Larry Aldrich, this happened the summer before he was to attend Columbia University and study law. He took a summer job as a salesman for a local dress manufacturer and within two years had created his own fashion firm. But even this was just a stepping stone as he dedicated the better part of his life to collecting and promoting art and eventually founded the first museum in the country to devote itself entirely to contemporary art. This museum, The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, opened to the public in 1964. Larry Aldrich always fostered a deep appreciation for beauty and one can see it in his fashion as well. Today's VPOD features a stunning sapphire blue ensemble he designed in the 1950s. The 3/4-length sleeves and patch pockets keep it from being too stuffy. The dress and jacket work well independent of each other and the pink rhinestone buttons add charm. It's a gorgeous find for a v ...

VPOD: The Little White Dress
2007-07-06 09:22:00
For decades, the LBD, or the Little Black Dress, has been a wardrobe staple in womens' closets. This season, designers gave us the LWD, or Little White Dress, sure to become a summertime classic like its darker sibling. Todays' VPOD features a vintage 1960s mini shift-dress by Phil Jacobs that looks like it walked off a 2007 runway. The honeycomb-pattern cotton has a classic A-line shape but the most interesting details are those cut-out sleeves. It's a vintage classic with a contemporary feel for a vintage fashionista!Available at Tasty Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: Edgy Victorian
2007-07-05 08:48:00
Any of you remember Marie and Donny Osmond? She was a little bit country, and he was a little bit rock 'n' roll. Mixing two disparate styles is popular in all the art forms: music, painting, dance and yes, even in fashion. Take a look at today's VPOD.This sheer black evening blouse from the 1980s mixes lace and sequins. It's a little bit Victorian with its high collar, scalloped placket and puffy tapered sleeves but overall it looks more Goth than prissy. It's an inexpensive amd fun piece for a vintage fashionista!Available at Penelopepup's Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. VPOD: True to the Red, White and Blue
2007-07-04 07:30:00
The Fourth of July brings back memories of parades, cookouts, counting flags on the way to my grandma's house and counting hours until we could light the sparklers and watch the fireworks. As a kid, I'd usually be decked out in a red, white and blue outfit but these days I prefer to add a quiet touch of patriotism without overdoing it--like with this modernist enamel bracelet by Kay Denning. It's a Fourth of July treat for a vintage fashionista!Available at The Copper Turtle.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list.
