VPOD: Bead It
2008-01-18 06:24:00
Don't you love finding ephemera in the pockets of vintage coats and handbags? That's something that doesn't happen when you bring home an item from the mall! Ticket stubs. Restaurant receipts. Photographs.Handwritten notes. They're little reminders that the garment or purse had a life before you. That it's been privy to the laughter, tears, and conversations of a prior owner. Today's VPOD is a beautiful c. 1925 French beaded evening bag with an outstanding jeweled and enameled clasp. But this stunning bag also holds the added thrill of a little handwritten note: Honey-moon Paris rue de Rivoli Le Marais w Albert - 1925. It's a sweet reminder that you're not just carrying any ol' evening bag but a piece of history. And that makes it an especially exciting find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Antiquepeek.com.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Batik Me
2008-01-17 09:10:00
Tina Leser liked to use wide-ranging fabric choices: sari silks from India, wools by Pringle, Persian brocades, Siamese robes, Filipino prints. That's what happens when you take an around-the-world honeymoon, like she did with her second husband in 1949. You end up becoming a master at stirring the world's great melting-pot of culture and whipping up incredible fashions infused with a distinctive American viewpoint.Today's VPOD is a fine example of this blending. This 1950s batik-print, one-shoulder sundress has just the right amount of ethnic island influence. I love the sarong-like draping and the charming strap detail at the shoulder. Its representative of the many "play" pieces Tina Leser designed for women on a budget. And more than 50 years later, it's still a beautiful bargain for a vintage fashionista!Available at Blue Velvet Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Designer Tomato
2008-01-16 08:27:00
There are plenty of designer tomatoes. For instance, this year you can expect the Strawmato, a tomato-strawberry hybrid, and a green-and-red striped Zebra. But I'm a strictly organic gal--no bio-engineering or genetic alterations for me please. Nope, the only one who gets to mess with my tomatoes, besides my favorite local farmer, is...Lanvin. This is the kind of designer tomato I'm interested in. At first glance, this late 1970s dress is just a killer maxi with eye-catching colors but then...wait for it...yep, those are tomatoes! I say tomatoes. You say to-mah-toes. Let's just call the whole thing......a delicious little find for a vintage fashionista!Available at C Madeleines Vintage Clothes.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Abstract Me
2008-01-15 08:47:00
In the documentary film My Kid Could Paint That, director Amir-Bar-Lev tells the story of little Marla Olmstead who, at the ripe old age of four, was painting modern canvases at her dining room table that had critics comparing her to Jackson Pollock. Genius modern art or toddler scribbles? You decide. After all, art is in the eye of the beholder. And if you hold an affinity for abstract art, then today's VPOD is for you. This 1980s print skirt has all the not-so-random brush strokes of ink and color that a girl could ever want. Oh, and its price hovers somewhere around $30, not $30 million. It's a cute abstraction for a vintage fashionista! Available at Dorothy & Evelyn.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: Ringing in 2008
2008-01-14 09:18:00
I fully support the writers in the ongoing Hollywood battle between the WGA and the AMPTP, so I completely understand why we didn't see our favorite celebrities parading in designer fashions at the Beverly Hilton Hotel yesterday. But with the Golden Globe Awards cancelled, I thought I'd try to make-up for yesterday's lack of Hollywood glitz and glamour with some red-carpet worthy vintage gems.Today's VPOD features four stunning rings representing four different eras: an Art Deco aquarmarine and diamond, an Edwardian ruby and diamond, a 1960s fire opal and diamond, and a 1950s estate imperial jade and diamond. These are the real thing, not costume imitations and will set you back from around $3000 to $20,500 depending which one you choose. (Can you guess which of the four is the most valuable?)They'd be a great way to ring in 2008 for a vintage fashionista!Available at Beladora.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing ...

VPOD: Prin(t)cess Lanvin
2008-01-11 08:33:00
Although Jeanne Lanvin died in 1947, her daughter and many talented designers continued her business after her death. And in the 1970s, Lanvin produced tons of print dresses a la today's VPOD.This particular frock echoes the repeating dot motif we're seeing this Spring. Its undulating lines are just perfect for camouflauging a belly or hips still waiting for the results of Pilates classes to kick in. Plus it's eco-friendly in every way! First, it's vintage; second, it's washable; and finally, it's an earth-inspired color scheme of tan, rust and charcoal black. What a great designer find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Ramona West Vintage Boutique.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. VPOD: The Genius of Gianni
2008-01-10 07:10:00
Gianni Versace certainly knew how to design dramatic and sexy clothing for women, but when you look at individual pieces, you'll often find classical references, as in today's VPOD.This fabulous 1980s leather skirt is quilted in a pattern described as "Greek meets modern art." And while it might be missing the glitter and slink that we usually associate with Versace's designs, it more than makes up for them with its uniqueness. Trends, fads, styles...they'll all come and go but a piece this classic and interesting will always look appropriate. It's a stunning wardrobe staple for a vintage fashionista!Available at Swank Vintage.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list here. Thirty is a number that a lot of women dread. It's the one birthday no one seems to enjoy celebrating. But I say embrace your thirties with...the 1930s! After all, the elegant, glamorous evening wear of this decade is sexy and sensual--perfect for a woman who's lived just enough life to be confident and self-assured.Today's VPOD features a 1930s evening gown in jet black chiffon with a playful punch of bubble-gum pink. VPOD: Flower Girl
2008-01-08 08:29:00
Most of us probably have some pictures of ourselves as little girls dressed in summer sundresses. How adorable were you?! Those cute little cotton prints, straps tied at the shoulders, puckered bodices--they do look adorable when you're young but can easily cross the line into inappropriate and ridiculous the older you become. But that doesn't mean you have to give up sundresses entirely. It just means you have to search harder for the grown-up look that fits the older (and improved) you.Today's VPOD comes to the rescue. This 1950s sundress by Horrockses has all the comfort you remember from when you were little but all the sophistication and charm you're looking for as an adult. With just the right amount of a colorful floral print on black cotton and a heart-shaped neckline with halter tie, this is one chic little frock. It's a perfect sundress for the vintage fashionista!Available at Vintage-A-Peel.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase informa ...

VPOD: Riding the Clutch
2008-01-04 07:15:00
Pierre Cardin, in his own words, admitted to designing "everything from chairs to chocolate." And while he did license and merchandise his name to the max, it shouldn't diminish from his immense skill as a designer. For instance, there are tons of reasons to love today's VPOD. This 1970s Pierre Cardin clutch is so fresh and modern with its abstract yet organic print and interesting, textured weave. The midnight blue-and-white color scheme works year round.
