Getting a Gun in Boston - Part III
2007-08-03 10:55:00
I posted about two weeks ago about the Tax Free weekend coming up in Massachusetts. And I posted (here) about how I got a great deal on a Ruger Mark III at the Four Seasons in Woburn. Put the two together and what do you get? A tax free gun purchase.I just received an email from Four Seasons stating the following:If you know what you want to purchase, call us or stop by the shop and we’ll put it aside for you until Saturday 8/11. If we don’t have what you want or if we run out of something, pay for it in full on Saturday and we’ll get it for you as soon as possible. We look forward to another busy “NO SALES TAX” day at Four Seasons! We have 13 people working that day to assist you in your purchase and to keep the lines and flow of paperwork going smoothly. Call or stop by the shop and reserve your TAX FREE ITEMS today! The Four Seasons isn't open on Sundays, so even though Sunday 8/12 is also tax free, your only change to shop there will be Saturday. Morton's Steak and Seafood for Two
2007-08-03 10:40:00
I've been to the Morton's in Boston once. I've been to the Morton's in Richmond a thousand times (Clients like it there). For a chain restaurant, their food is quite good. I usually go for the sliced beefsteak tomato with blue cheese and then the "slightly smaller" ribeye - medium rare. Click (here) for a link to their Steak and Seafood for Two promotion. It's $99 and runs through September 30th. Here's what you get for your $99:2 Single Cut FiletsChoice of Two: Colossal Shrimp Alexander (These are awesome) Jumbo Lump Crab Cake (Always delicious) Broiled Sea Scallops (Never had these, but I bet they're tasty)Choice of Two: Caesar Salad Morton's SaladOne Signature PotatoOne Fresh Vegetable (Get the sauteed wild mushrooms)Choice of Two: Morton's Legendary Hot Chocolate Cake (This one is a no brainer) Key Lime Pie (Nothing special)Anyone been to Morton's lately and can share with readers exactly how much the promo helps us save? Also, if you don ...

Chinatown August Moon Festival
2007-08-02 14:52:00
Coming up this Sunday is the Chinatown celebration for the August Moon Festival. According to the Metro, legend had it that the Chinese overthrew the Mongol Yuan Dynasty in 1368 with the help of hidden messages in mooncakes.Personally, I have no idea where the celebration comes from, I just like to eat my mooncake. I'm also a fan of Lion Dancing, and Chinese martial arts performances - both of which will be taking place this Sunday, August 5th. Other stuff going on: Chinese Calligraphy, Live Music, a Ping Pong tournament, and much much more. Click (here) for official website. Festivities will be centered around the Chinatown Gate and start at 10am and run until 5pm. Here's the plan. Wake up around 10am, saunter over to China Pearl and grab some dim sum. Afterwards, stick around for a few performances and then spend the rest of the day working on that tan in Boston Common. Shakespeare on the Common - Part II
2007-08-01 20:02:00
Did you guys get a chance to see "A Midsummer Night's Dream" last week? Remember how I mentioned that the show got cut down from 20 performances down to only 7 due to budget cuts? Click (here) for original post. Well I read some news yesterday that really IRKS me. Read the Globe article for yourself (here)The president and chief executive of the Citi Performing Arts Center received a $1.265 million dollar bonus on top of his $409K salary. Question: What was the budget for the full run of Shakespeare on the Common? Answer: About 960K. This got cut in half to about 480K leaving us the audience with only 7 shows to try to go to.I think you can see where I'm going with this. First of all, aren't bonuses only supposed to be paid out when you do a good job? Screwing us all out of 13 Shakespeare performances doesn't really seem like a good job to me. Secondly, how about just taking a "measly" 700K bonus, and NOT cutting the Shakespeare on the Common budget? This just goes to sh ...

Here Comes Kevin Garnett
2007-07-31 09:51:00
All-Star Kevin Garnett is supposedly on his way to the Celtics. Announced today, the Celtics will be making a 5 to 1 trade with Minnesota to make this deal go through. The Celtics will send Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, Theo Ratliff, Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, and two first-round picks to the Timberwolves for Garnett, terms both sides have agreed to in principle. The news is all over the Globe and the Metro in case you haven't heard about it yet. All throughout June, we read articles like the one (here) on ESPN saying Garnett would never come to Boston. But the tables have turned. Maybe he buy Manny's place when he moves here; it's still on the market. Or anyone else that has $6.9 million dollars laying around - who wouldn't want to live in the penthouse of the Ritz?Know of Any Interesting Boston News or Events That You'd Like to Share?Email me at beantownblog@gmail.com ...

Pinkberry Substitute
2007-07-30 11:50:00
Ever had Pinkberry? I had it for the first time about a month or so ago while I was in New York. I'll admit that it was pretty tasty, and it was nice with the fresh fruit toppings. Steep price though. I think it was like $7 or $8 for a large. Yesterday's Globe had a plug for another low-calorie frozen yogurt called Frogurt. My first reaction is....terrible name. It's almost as bad as when they named Botox by combining the terms 'botulism' and 'toxin.' Anyway, Frogurt is available at the Three Sisters ice cream shop in Providence. It's a 45 minute drive versus a 4 hour drive to NYC to get your '25 calorie an ounce' frozen dessert fix. I'll report back once I have a chance to drive down there and try it. For those of you out for summer. Here's the address for you to check it out if you've got time.1074 Hope StProvidence, RI 02906(401) 273-7230Know of Any Interesting Boston News or Events That You'd Like to Share?Email me at beantownblog@gmail.com ...

“Celebrate Seafood” Dinner Series
2007-07-29 16:47:00
Many thanks to Annie from the New England Aquarium for letting me know about their "Celebrate Seafood" dinner series focused on sustainable seafood. Do you guys remember reading an article last November about how we're going to run out of seafood over the next 50 years? An article was published in Science and there were local news articles everywhere covering it. Here's a link to a BBC article from that time (here).I'm a huge seafood lover. I drove up to Rockport a few weeks ago to get some lobster and do some kayaking. I'm planning on still being around in 2050, and life would suck if there was no seafood left. So everyone do your part to at least be educated on the situation and what alternatives are available. This Tuesday, July 31st, the dinner series will feature Barramundi, an ocean-friendly replacement for Chilean sea bass. BTW, the real name for Chilean Sea Bass is Patagonian Toothfish - just a little bit of trivia for you. My head is full of useless trivia. Click ...
