McCormick and Schmicks Coupon
2007-08-16 09:45:00
Besides target shooting, eating is definitely one of my other favorite hobbies - if you can call eating a hobby. I love to try new restaurants but at the same time, eating out all the time is hard on the finances (and hard on the weight loss plan). Here's a temporary reprieve for your wallet, brought to you by McCormick and Schmicks.Click (here) for a link to a promotion that is running where you'll get a $25 gift certificate for making a reservation online prior to 8/24 for a dinner to be eaten prior to 9/25. Sounds like a great deal to me. See below for the 2 McCormick and Schmicks locations in the Boston area. One in the Theater District, and one in Fanuil Hall. 34 Columbus Ave. Boston, Massachusetts 02116 (617) 482-3999 North Market Building, Faneuil Hall Marketplace Boston, Massachusetts 02109 Restaurant: (617) 720-5522Know of Any Interesting Boston News or Events That You'd Like to Share?Email me at beantownblog@gmail.com ...

Guns In Boston
2007-08-14 13:20:00
Due to all my travel, I just got around to reading the Sunday paper from 3 days ago. And what do I see on the front page staring back at me? Right at the top in large bold font, "Gun Permits Drop 25% in Bay State." Click (here) if you'd like to read the article for yourself. As many of you may know, I just recently got my own gun permit (here) after a fairly lengthy application process. Here are a few tidbits and statistics from the article that I found to be enlightening. Overall, the number of people in Massachusetts with a license to carry a weapon has declined from about 330,000 to about 240,000 from 2001 to 2007.In Boston, the number of licensed owners fell from 7,577 in 2001 to 4,374 this year, a drop of 42 percent. In the same period, gun licenses in Cambridge dropped 25 percent to 782; 71 percent to 484 in Brookline, and 33 percent to 1,150 in Newton, state records show.As a gun owner (and even before I was one), my personal opinion was that if someone wanted to go through ...
William Gibson Book Reading 8/19
2007-08-14 09:20:00
For all the science fiction fans out there, this is a pretty big deal. The Harvard Bookstore will be hosting Wiliam Gibson on Sunday, August 19th. Mr. Gibson will be reading from his latest novel "Spook Country" and participating in a discussion.William Gibson coined the term "cyberspace", wrote Neuromancer, Mona Lisa Overdrive, and Johnny Mnemonic (which later became that Keanu Reeves movie). Click (here) to read his wikipedia entry, it's fascinating. Set in the same high-tech present day as Pattern Recognition, Gibson's fine ninth novel offers startling insights into our paranoid and often fragmented, postmodern world. When a mysterious, not yet actual magazine, Node, hires former indie rocker–turned–journalist Hollis Henry to do a story on a new art form that exists only in virtual reality, Hollis finds herself investigating something considerably more dangerous..."Tickets are $5 and are available at Harvard Book Store, or over the phone with a credit card at 617-661-1515. ...

Welcome Legal Seafoods Mail Order
2007-08-10 20:18:00
The Beantown Bloggery is proud to welcome Legal Seafoods as an advertiser to the website. For those of you in MA that are a little further out and can't make the trek to any of the area restaurants , Legal Seafoods Mail Order Service is the answer for you. It's also great for parties you might be catering/hosting. We've only got 3 weeks left before September hits and the kids head back to school - time to plan that summer clambake you were thinking about.Admittedly, there are other seafood places in Boston that have a bit more character - B&G Oysters is at the top of my list. But, I always end up going back to Legals every once in a while because their food is consistently great. Whenever my friends (or parents) visit from out of town, we make at least one trip to Legal's for the clam chowder. I'm also a huge fan of their double stuffed baked shrimp.I've added a link on the left that will bring you to the Legals Mail Order Website. And to sweeten the pot, I dug around onli ...
Toby Keith & Miranda Lambert Tickets
2007-08-10 10:17:00
To all the country music fans out there, tickets for Toby Keith's September 22nd concert go on sale tomorrow (Saturday 8/11) at 10am EST. Miranda Lambert is opening for him. If you don't listen to country, give it a chance. It's great music. It's been seven years since I moved to Boston from Texas and country music is definitely one of the things I brought with me and still hold on to.For all you other Southern transplants, check out The Texas Roadhouse in Everett. Whenever I'm homesick - I go there, have a burger, and throw some peanut shells on the ground. Click (here) for a link to Yelp reviews. It's a mixed bag, some people love it and some people hate it. I for one love it there. But I digress, click (here) for a link to Ticketmaster. From personal experience, I have found the ticketmaster site to be alot more reliable than the LiveNation site in terms of starting ticket sales right at 10am. Hard Rock Hotel in Boston?
2007-08-09 14:26:00
According to a Globe article yesterday, the company that owns the Hard Rock Cafe chain is looking at Boston as a favorable location for a Hard Rock Hotel. When Mayor Menino was asked for a comment he said "I stayed at one in Las Vegas. It was great. It was neat." How very eloquent. I haven't stayed at the Hard Rock in Vegas but I have hung out at the bar a few times - it's definitely one of the great hangouts in Vegas. With the success of Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods in CT and the pending deal to build a casino in Middleboro, it makes sense to bring a Hard Rock Hotel & Casino to the area or even just a Hard Rock Hotel. There's been a surge in the luxury hotel/condo developments over past few years. The Hotel Intercontinental on Atlantic Ave, the Mandarin Oriental near the Prudential Center, and the rumored W Hotel that's going to be going up in the Theater District. My only request is that if they build a Hard Rock in Boston, please build a Nobu inside it like the one in Vegas. Traveling to NYC
2007-08-06 22:47:00
I'm not the hugest fan of NYC, I find it crowded and intimidating. But I have to admit that it's slowly growing on me. I spent this past weekend there and had a great time. I ate some wonderful food and walked around a fairly substantial part of the city.Today, I'd like to address getting to NYC from Boston. By now, most of you have probably heard of the 'chinatown bus'. When I first rode it 7 years ago, it was pretty shady. They picked up on one of the streets in Boston Chinatown and dropped you off on one of the streets in NYC Chinatown. Prices, if you can believe it, have actually come down from the original $25 from 7 yrs ago. Today, there are 2 main companies running these buses and the cost is a mere $15 one way. Now the buses leave from South Station in Boston, but still pick up/drop off around Canal Street in NYC.The two main bus companies are Fung Wah and Lucky Star. Personally, I recommend Lucky Star. Fung Wah has had a series of accidents and other general sh ...
