Cambridge Carnival Festival - 8/26
2007-08-23 09:33:00
This Sunday, 8/26 - the 15th Annual Cambridge Carnival will be held in Kendall Square from noon to 7pm. The parade route has been expanded and will span 1.5 miles passing through Cambridgeport, Central Square and Kendall Square in Cambridge.Caribbean Carnival International, is a colorful and festive celebration that is rooted in African traditions. Carnival secretly allowed public communication and cultural bonding for the Afro-Caribbean cultures from as far back as the 1600s.This year's festival will feature seven entertainment zones: a live music zone with Reggae, Soca, Calypso, World Music, and New Orleans's Jazz; a KidsFest zone; 4 DJ zones representing a variety of music from the Caribbean, and a steel band zone. I was in St. Thomas in April, which is when they celebrate Carnival over there. It was a lot of fun. The parties went on until the sun came up. If you're all salsa'd out after Saturday's event, swing by the Cambridge Carnival on Sunday ...
Salsa! By the Charles - 8/25
2007-08-22 14:28:00
If blues music isn't your thing, maybe salsa dancing is. This Saturday 8/25, Community Boating, SalsaBoston and JJ Productions Present: Salsa by the Charles II. I'm not much of a dancer. I missed the swing dancing craze in the late 90's and I'm definitely standing on the sidelines for the current latin dancing craze. That's what makes this particular event nice. They have a beginner's class at 8:30pm and then the real party commences at 9:30 until 1:30am. So if you can't dance, head over early and learn a few moves. Then you can live la vida loca for the rest of the night. Click (here) for details and info on ticket sales. Tickets are $20 ahead of time or $25 at the door.Know of Any Interesting Boston News or Events That You'd Like to Share?Email me at beantownblog@gmail.com ...

FreeCreditReport.com & TJX
2007-08-22 10:12:00
If you've been reading the newspapers this week, you've probably read about how they arrested a Ukrainian man in Turkey who is suspected of selling some of the credit/debit card numbers stolen from TJX earlier this year.Remember when TJX (parent company of TJMaxx & Marshalls) announced in January that they had been hacked and they had lost 45 million credit/debit card numbers? If you're like me, you instantly freaked out and started staring at your cc statements for months on end to make sure no fraudulent charges were being made. Lots of my friends called their banks and got new cards issued. This is where, FreeCreditReport.com comes in. This service is run by Experian, one of the three big credit reporting agencies and provides you with a free credit report. It also enrolls you in a 30 day free trial membership in Triple AdvantageSM Credit Monitoring. After the trial membership, the service costs $12.95 a month. Sure, it's early, but admission is free and hopefully most of the tourist population hasn't woken up yet. An Evening with Jack Welch
2007-08-20 10:49:00
Legendary former GE CEO Jack Welch will be hosting a Q&A session at Salem State College on September 18th at 7pm. Tickets are on sale now (here) and you can get more details about the event at the official site (here). I'm posting early because there are only 400 tickets available, so I want to make sure any folks that are interested can get one. I figure with all the business schools and aspiring MBA's in the Boston area, there will be a huge demand to be able to ask Mr. Welch some questions. I have to admit that I find his policy of firing the bottom 10% of his managers each year intriguing. It instills a sense of competition/motivation within your employees to work hard. I personally think jobs should be treated as meritocracies. Stuff at Night Hot100 List
2007-08-16 13:37:00
I'm thoroughly disappointed in Stuff@Night this week. Those of you downtown, have you picked up their latest issue yet and read through their Hot100 list?On page52, they have their choice for "Hot Blog" and they chose a NYC blog. While I'm sure fashionista.com is a great site, there are thousands of Boston-related blogs to choose from. And while I'd be ecstatic if my blog were considered "Hot", I feel that at the very least, they could have featured a Boston-centric blog.Dear Stuff@night - click (here) for a list of Boston blogs. We already did the work of aggregating our links there so you don't have to go digging.PS. I already wrote them an email because I am just that disgruntled. Everything else they chose was Boston related.Know of Any Interesting Boston News or Events That You'd Like to Share?Email me at beantownblog@gmail.com ...
