Members-Only University Clubs
2007-11-05 11:32:00
There's an article in yesterday's Globe that talks about downtown University Clubs. These are member's-only clubs for the mover and shaker alumni in the area to dine. The four universities featured: BU, BC, UMass, and Harvard.Catering to well-heeled alumni and power brokers, the clubs are popular destinations for business lunches, meetings, and formal functions. If there's one thing I've learned after joining the workforce, it's who you know, not what you know. And so I ask, why isn't there an MIT club? If there was one, I'd join in a heartbeat. Something about members-only makes it seem exclusive and desirable.According to the article, membership at the BC and UMass clubs are invitation only. That leaves BU and Harvard. I started doing some research and non-Harvard folks can join the Downtown club (here). And you can get more information on the BU club (here) where half of its members did not attend BU.Click (here) for the original Globe article.Know of Any Interesti ...

Todd English Book Signing - 11/6
2007-11-05 11:16:00
Todd English is one of the many famous chef's in the Boston area. He owns several restaurants that I'm sure you've been to: Figs, Olives, Kingfish Hall, Bonfire, etc. On Tuesday 11/6, Todd English will be at the Macy's in the Natick Mall signing copies of Great Gatherings: Star Chefs Entertain at Home.I'm personally not a big fan of Todd English's restaurants. If it were Barbara Lynch signing book, I'd definitely be there. I love B&G Oysters. I haven't been to her flagship restaurant No. 9 Park yet, but I hear lots of good things about it. Anyhoo, the event is tomorrow at 6pm at the Home Store area of Macy's on the upper level. The book is $29.95 and you can find more info on Todd English at his website (here). Brownstone: A Review
2007-11-05 10:28:00
For those of you unfamiliar with the South End, there was a mediocre bbq restaurant on Dartmouth street called Prairie Star that in the past year has been renovated and turned into Brownstone. I'd seen advertisements for it in Stuff@Night and some of the other local magazines but had never tried it. Well, this past Sunday, my girlfriend and I had brunch there. It was the worst meal we've had in years. There were so many problems, I'm not sure where to start: the beginning I suppose.1. The half and half for the coffee was curdled/spoiled. 2. The cheeseburger pizza appetizer was luke warm and bland.3. To the waitress: If you're not going to write down our orders, please make sure you get the orders correct. Bringing me the wrong omelette and then staring down at your blank notepad over and over again doesn't fix things. 4. How do you mess up a bacon cheeseburger? My gf's cheeseburger was inedible. It's partly my fault. The fact that the restaurant was empty should have ...

Beauty and the Geek Casting Call - 11/3
2007-11-02 10:22:00
HOLY COW. If I was still in college, I'd totally go to this. But now I have a job and I don't think they'll let me take a sabbatical to be on an Ashton Kutcher reality tv show. Well, I guess I'll have to leave it to all the younger kids at MIT to win. This Saturday at The Estate, they will be doing a casting call for hot women and geeky men. If you haven't seen Beauty and the Geek (I watched the first season), it's a pretty entertaining show. This coming from someone that doesn't watch reality tv. The show is in it's 5th season now.I'm pretty geeky, but man, some of those guys they get on this show are off the hizzy. Click (here) for more information on the casting call.Know of Any Interesting Boston News or Events That You'd Like to Share?Email me at beantownblog@gmail.com ...

Where to Watch The Pats Crush the Colts
2007-11-02 10:09:00
I have to say that the recent Pats games have been fairly boring to watch. Watching them destroy the Redskins last week really wasn't that enjoyable. There was no suspense. Just touchdown after touchdown. Of course I'm glad we won, but if I wasn't on a treadmill and needed to distract myself from the fact that I was running (I hate running); I would have switched it off. This weekend's game will be different. The currently undefeated Patriots take on the currently undefeated Colts. Where should you watch the game? Normally I'd say in the comfort of your own home, especially since Hurricane Noel is going to make life painful for at least the first half of the weekend. BUT, this little tidbit may sway your decision. The Joshua Tree Bar & Grill in Allston will be hosting the Patriots Cheerleaders Viewing Party from 4pm to 6pm. That's right: cheerleaders + beer + football = happiness.Know of Any Interesting Boston News or Events That You'd Like to Share?Email me at bea ...

2007-11-02 09:55:00
I still don't really understand the concept of "premium denim." Maybe someone out there can explain to me how jeans can cost $200. They're just jeans. I tried on a pair of True Religion jeans once, I couldn't figure out how they were any different from normal jeans.Anyway, The Warehouse Sale (which seems to be some sort of traveling closeout sale company) is hosting a premium denim sample sale this upcoming Tuesday and Wednesday (11/6-11/7) at the Castle @ The Boston Park Plaza Hotel & Towers. They will be selling: premium denim, dresses, pants, hoodies, sweats for both men & women.Where: 130 Columbus Ave, Boston, MAWhen: Tuesday (11/6) and Wednesday (11/7) from noon to 8pm. Bob's Southern Bistro Closing
2007-10-31 12:40:00
If you haven't tried their Sunday Jazz Brunch, you better make your reservations soon because Bob's Southern Bistro won't be around much longer. An article in yesterday's Globe (here) talks a bit about what will be happening to the space after Bob's closes on November 25th. Settles, whose name has been associated with Boston's jazz scene over the past decade, told the Globe yesterday that he is selling the South End institution to Malcolm Aalders, a 28-year-old Cleveland native who recently moved to Boston from the Netherlands.Aalders will take over the space in December and plans to rename it Night Town. The menu will feature American cuisine, and live musical performances will range from rock to funk to jazz to "whatever people want," Aalders said yesterday. "We'll have the best burger in the Greater Boston area," he added. The "best burger in the Greater Boston area." Bold claim. We'll see in December if Mr. Aalders pulls through. I will miss Bob's fried chicken, but a g ...

A Night At The Rock Opera - Review
2007-10-30 10:19:00
So this past weekend, I went to opening night of "A Night At the Rock Opera" at the Wilbur Theatre and it was amazing. I didn't know what to expect prior to going, all I really knew about it was what I saw off of the Ultrasonic Rock Orchestra's website (here). But I was blown away. Twenty-three people on stage rocking out - it was very different and very cool.I don't listen to old music. What I call old music, you may call "classic" music. I've never listened to the Beatles, the Who - old school stuff like that. I'm more of a "what's on the radio right now" type of guy. So anyway, the URO played their adaptations of a lot of "classic" music so when I first saw the program I was a little dejected. I hardly recognized any of the songs. But when the music started, I was pleasantly surprised. Their enthusiasm and high-energy was so evident and contagious, that I didn't really mind that I didn't know the songs. I enjoyed them anyway. It was a great performance. And yes, ...

More Morton's for Boston
2007-10-29 14:18:00
Coming soon to the Seaport District: Boston's 2nd Morton's. I'm a fan of Morton's - I'm rarely at the one in Boston though. I'm usually at the one in Richmond for client dinners. With all the development going on in the Seaport District: the luxury lofts, Waterside Place, etc. The Seaport District is going to be a fast growing area. I loved the apartments at Parklane Seaport when I looked at them. It's just a little inconvenient in terms of public transportation.Anyway, Morton's part II is coming to 2 Seaport Lane and opens its doors on November 2nd. Haru tonight, Morton's on Friday. Sounds like a good plan to me. Too bad I'm on a diet.Know of Any Interesting Boston News or Events That You'd Like to Share?Email me at beantownblog@gmail.com ...

Haru Opening in the Prudential Center Today
2007-10-29 14:01:00
Has anyone eaten at Haru before? It's a New York City chain owned by the Benihana Inc. They took over the space in the Prudential Center previously occupied by Dick's Last Resort and according to a sign I saw this weekend while walking through the mall, it opens TODAY.According a super old Globe article (here): The 165-seat Haru restaurant will include a sushi bar, a lounge area, private event space, and outdoor seating, Boston Properties said. "Haru is one of today's most renowned names in Japanese cuisine," Bryan J. Koop, senior vice president of Boston Properties, said in a statement. "Their innovative menu, partnered with the restaurant's Asian-influenced and stylish decor, is a perfect addition to the Prudential Center's restaurant offerings."I am a big sushi fan, so I welcome the addition. I just wish it was Nobu instead of Haru. No offense to Haru, I haven't tried you yet so maybe you're terrific. But man, Nobu is delicious....If anyone decides to go check it out o ...

New Discount NYC-Boston Bus Line
2007-10-26 12:47:00
Now normally, I wouldn't be posting about yet another discount bus service going to NYC, there's already a ton: Lucky Star, Fung Wah (For those with a deathwish), Peter Pan, Greyhound, Limoliner, etc. Say hello to Vamoose. What makes Vamoose special? Free WiFi access on the bus and guaranteed seating. It's a little bit pricier. $22 per one way trip in advance or $25 at the door. According to the Globe, the guaranteed seating is the big draw. But for me, it's the 4 hours of being able to surf the net and IM with friends while riding on the bus. I bet electrical sockets will be a hot commodity on this bus.One odd thing that I need to check out, it seems like they pick up and drop off on a street corner behind Copley Place. Reminds me of back in the day when the Chinatown bus first started running and they picked up on the streets of Chinatown.Anyway, click (here) to read the Globe article for yourself or click (here) to go to the Vamoose website. If anyone tries it out bef ...
