2007-06-22 10:00:56
The summer of sequels is on a semi-break this weekend as we have 2 all new films and 1 which is kind of a sequel, but doesn’t carry over any characters other than the Big Guy himself. Coming off a very strong opening I’m expecting Fantastic Four to retain its number one position again this weekend. I’m definitely going to get out there and see Stephen King’s new film from this bunch as I always enjoy those, even the bad ones. Alright then, hope you have a great weekend. The Golden Compass: Book Review
2007-06-22 09:00:41
In preparation for the release of the film, The Golden Compass this fall, I just finished reading the book by Philip Pullman. If you read my preview of The Golden Compass you’ll know I had very high hopes for this series of books to replace the hole created in the hearts of many Harry Potter fans this summer once book 7 is released. The Golden Compass is the tale Twelve year old Lyra Belacqua. The story begins simply enough. Lyra is an orphan who lives at Oxford where, she and her best friend Roger get into all sorts of mischief until Roger goes missing. From this simple seed the story of the Golden Compass grows into a wonderfully dark and complex tale, rich in fantasy and adventure. The Oxford at which Lyra lives at is in a universe parallel to our own. On her quest to find and rescue Roger, Lyra learns dangerous secrets, encounters a host of colorful characters, and a wonderous object. There is the secret organization known as the Gobblers who are snatching children to be u ...
Blockbuster Cuddles Up to Blu-Ray, Dumps HD-DVD
2007-06-22 08:00:58
This week Blockbuster announced plans to begin only renting high-def DVDs in the Blu-ray format. This announcement could possibly apply additional pressure to the HD-DVD camp as it fights to win the on-going format war with Blu-ray. What I’m not sure of is just how much of a juggernaut Blockbuster Video really is anymore. They’re desperately trying to play catch-up to Netflix in the online market, which is not only hurting them there but also back in their brick and mortar locations as well. So should HD-DVD really be that concerned about this decision? Blockbuster is currently renting both versions of the high-def formats in only 250 locations. When they expand that to over 1400 locations next month the additional stores won’t receive any HD-DVD copies. Unfortunately I think this will mainly hurt the customers. Not all movies are available in both formats as some studios are chosen to become exclusive on one format or the other. Universal Studios’ ...

Pirate Master Recap - (Episode 4) 6/21/07
2007-06-21 20:30:31
Here we go with week 4 on Pirate Master, CBS’ new Survivor meets Pirates of the Caribbean reality TV show. Last week we saw Alexis set adrift due to her lackluster attitude and willingness to pull her own weight aboard the ship and on the competitions. We also saw a new captain come into power, Azmyth, after the tyrannous Joe Don was dethroned. There are a few unresolved issues from last week that we’ll need to get worked out tonight, like Sean going back on his bribed vote and Jay turning his back on JD by trying to vote out his partner in crime, Cheryl. Let’s see who gets burned by the Pirate fire this week on Pirate Master! Well right off the bat we’re into the Sean and Jay argument. Sean apologizes profusely for going back on his word, but he doesn’t give back the $1000 of gold that Jay gave his as a bribe. I can’t believe Jay didn’t demand that back! All we get out of Jay is that Sean is dead to him now. I just can’t believe ...

Coming Soon: I Am Legend - Trailer & Details
2007-06-21 12:00:25
I love vampire movies. They’re almost always a lot of fun and full of good action and adventure. Will Smith has also proven himself to be a pretty darn good action movie star over the years, though he’ll always be the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to me! So here Smith has found himself in a movie that kept trying to get off the ground. Ridley Scott was working on it back in the late 90’s with Arnold Schwarzenegger in mind. The Rob Bowman gave it a whirl with a low budget in mind a few years later. But it was Francis Lawrence (director of Constantine) that finally got it off the ground. Don’t be fooled though, this isn’t going to the be the first big screen adaptation of the novel. I’d be wrong if I told you it would even be the second. In fact, I Am Legend will be the third time around for this particular novel, but it is the first to use the actual novel title. In 1964 Vincent Price starred as Dr. Robert Morgan (instead of Neville) in a v ...

Rosie O?Donnell May Come On Down to the Price is Right
2007-06-21 10:04:15
Oh the horror, the horror. A few weeks ago I joked about Rosie O’Donnell taking over for Bob Barker. I never imagined that it could stand a serious chance of becoming a terrifying reality. Rosie, according to her website, has been calling the Price is Right producers every day nagging them to give her the show. Well on Friday she’s going in to talk with them about doing just that. I’m hoping this is just an elaborate trick to catch her so Barker can finally spay her and save the world. ...
Epic Movie: Movie Review
2007-06-21 10:00:21
In addition to catching Surf’s Up this weekend in the theater, we also rented Epic movie. All I can say is thank God I didn’t pay $9 to see this travesty in the theater. As it is, I’d like to get my $4 back from Blockbuster. This movie was absolutely awful. It is supposed to be a parody of the action adventure films of 2006 the way the Scary Movie series parodies the horror films of the past year. The difference of course is that Scary Movie is funny while Epic Movie is not. I had been looking forward to seeing this movie. I really enjoy the Scary Movies and the scenes they show in the trailers look funny. Unfortunately, they are only funny when taken out of context. In the movie they are pretty pointless and unfunny. The story primarily follows the plot of Narnia, but includes elements from a number of other 2006 movies including: Willy Wonka, The Da Vinci Code, Pirates of the Caribbean, Nacho Libre, Borat, and Snakes on a Plane. I think one of the main pro ...
Pirate Master Preview - (Episode 4) 6/21/07
2007-06-21 08:30:14
Ahoy there! Gettin’ ready for the next installment of Pirate Master, eh matey? Well, this tonight’s episode should be interesting after the change in command last week. With Joe Don now part of the crew and Azmyth running the show we have already seen sweeping changes in how the ship is being run. But, I’m not sure that is to everyone’s liking. Jay was certainly not too keen on being forced to split his officer’s share of the booty with the rest of the crew. Azmyth was made captain because he has been a strong competitor in all of the treasure hunts and he is certainly less likely to have the authority of being captain go to his head than Joe Don but, I’m not certain that this will necessarily translate into good leadership for the crew. Azmyth’s approach to the treasure winnings may turn out to be really smart. When JD was the captain and took his lion’s share, leaving only scraps to be divided up, there was little motivation for hi ...

Big Brother 8: Which Game Play Style Can Win This Season?
2007-06-21 06:45:00
It’s just a few more weeks until Big Brother 8 gets started all over for another great summer of house guest fun. Over the past seasons it’s been fun to watch which house guests’ strategies work and which don’t. Best of all, it changes each season, so no plan of attack is a sure thing. So what’s worked in the past and what hasn’t? Let’s take a look at Big Brother Game Play Styles. “The Under the Radar“ player will make sure he or she does not become a target for eviction by staying out of the way. UtR will intentionally fold a winning hand in the competitions, especially the HoH. UtR believes that the best way to make enemies is to make nominations. You can expect to find this player whispering decisions into the ear of his or her frontman/woman who actually does win the HoH. UtR is actually a pretty successful approach to the Big Brother game. Notable winners in past seasons who applied this method to some degree: Lisa f ...
Breach: Movie Review
2007-06-20 12:00:41
Breach Starring: Chris Cooper, Ryan Phillippe, Laura Linney Director: Billy Ray Genre: Drama / Thriller Rated: Rated PG-13 for violence, sexual content and language. Details: Eric O’Neill (Ryan Phillippe) is promoted to a job inside FBI headquarters working for respected agent Robert Hanssen (Chris Cooper). Then O’Neill learns his true mission: finding proof that Hanssen has been selling U.S. secrets to the Soviet Union for years. My Review: I had initially passed over Breach because of a lack of motivation to see what I thought would a be very interesting but not very exciting movie. But when I saw this coming out on DVD and read that it was a great, underrated thriller I decided to give it a chance and I’m glad I did. This movie is closely based on the true story behind the greatest known security breach in the history of the United States. Robert Hanssen (Cooper) spent over twenty years building a career within the FBI, all the while tearing it apart fr ...
Christina Aguilera Pregnant; K-Fed Didn?t Do It, Allegedly
2007-06-20 10:47:02
Well it’s about time Christina Aguilera got on the baby-train. Page Six is reporting that a close “friend” of Aguilera is stating that the singer has begun whispering the news around to her friends. Based on the sharing of information the same informant believes that means she’s three months pregnant. That could be the case, but people really vary on that like K-Fed when he randomly guesses just so a few months later he can shout, “See, yo! I told ya so. Now where’s my money?” This would be the first child for Christina Aguilera and her husband, Jordan Bratman. Bratman must have the best personality, ever. Source: Page Six ...
Chinese Censors Kung Fu Kick Pirates of the Caribbean 3
2007-06-20 10:00:09
Captain Jack Sparrow may have great luck getting out of bad situations, but this time getting in is the problem. China has declared parts of the blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” to be guilty of “vilifying Chinese”. The offensive material comes at the hands of none other than Chow Yun-Fat and his character Captain Sao Feng. Chow’s on-screen time has been cut down to half its original amount, roughly 10 minutes. Popular Cinema cited the Chinese censorship issues: The captain played by Chow is bald, his face heavily scarred. He also has a long beard and long nails, whose image is still in line with Hollywood’s old tradition of demonizing the Chinese. The official Xinhua news agency added, “Chinese censors also cut Chow’s line in which he states ‘Welcome to Singapore’ because it hints Singapore is a land of pirates.” Oddly they didn’t seem to have such an issue with Sparrow̵ ...

Pirate Master: Ranking the Remaining Crew - Week 4
2007-06-20 08:00:27
Last week we finally got a change of pace with JD getting knocked from his pirate throne by the new captain, Azmyth. Despite Jay’s efforts to get Cheryl to walk the plank it was Alexis who was set adrift. After watching tough guy Christian getting the pirate boot the week before I was wondering if the crew would start voting based on high sea value or not. I was happy to see Alexis head out on the raft because she really didn’t seem to be cutting it as a pirate anymore. Her “can’t do” attitude was wearing thin and despite her claim that it was other people’s problem if they didn’t like her it turned out to be her’s. It looks like the pirate crew may have decided to start voting by value, but will it continue? Let’s take a look at who is left of the crew and how they rank against one another in Pirate Master Worthiness as we enter Week 4: #13 - Joy: Why the crew voted off Christian instead of her is lost on me. After ...
