IPL: Money for nothing - cricket’s economy booming…
2008-02-21 22:55:30
The IPL auction has blown cricket’s economy wide open with its astronomical salaries. Will the players be earning their keep?

In his early twenties, when many referred to George Best as the fifth Beatle, the world was his oyster. With his bright eyes, flowing locks, designer shirts, a Jaguar E-type in the garage, and skills that have seldom been seen on English football pitches since, Best epitomised the hedonistic 60s and a break with the bleak austerity of the post-war years. In those days he was on about US$295 a week - more than what Bobby Moore, England’s World Cup-winning captain, earned.
According to an article in the London Times last November, inflation over the last 40 years stood at 1257 percent. Going by that figure, you might have expected today’s top English Premier League footballers to be earning ...

IPL: Ponting surprised at his low price

Ricky Ponting says he is disappointed he did not sell for more at Wednesday’s Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, where he was valued nearly US$1 million lower than Andrew Symonds. However, Ponting said there would be no friction in the Australian dressing room following the bidding war, during which he went to Kolkata for $400,000.
“I thought I might have been able to attract a little bit more than that,” Ponting said. “The fact I haven’t made a lot of runs over the last couple of weeks probably hasn’t helped much. But realistically we as Australian players probably won’t be able to take part in the first couple of years of the event anyway.”

IPL: How the teams stack up? Squads, Contracts and Information

As the dust settles on the frenzied IPL auction, it’s time to look at what the 44-day extravaganza will be all about: building a balanced team capable of winning the title. It’s early days yet, with most squads not even half complete, but several trends have emerged.
It would be premature to tip the favourites yet - the teams still have to settle on U-22 players, others outside the pool - but it’s worth exploring the line-ups. While Hyderabad have gone for batting fireworks, Delhi have preferred athleticism on the field. If Bangalore have chosen bowlers who can turn it on, Kolkata seem to have preferred an experienced batting line-up. Here we run the rule over the eight teams.

Ishant Sharma praised as ‘dangerous’ by Ponting
2008-02-10 11:34:00
“He’s a little bit different in the fact that he probably brings the ball back into right-handers more than most right-arm bowlers we have faced.” - Ricky Ponting explains why Ishant is dangerous © Getty Images
Ricky Ponting is still working out how to tackle Ishant Sharma. You could say he is a bit puzzled. The Australian captain admitted as much as Ishant waited to talk about his spoils at the post-match media briefing.
“He’s been a big improver for India through this tour”, Ponting said of Ishant, who has already got him thrice this summer. Memories of the WACA Test, where he twice edged Ishant to the slips, during the Test series, seem to still haunt Ponting and he had no answer to Ishant’s poser on Sunday.
Not surprising, then, that Ishant knows the value of having the number of the one of the best batsmen of this decade. “Ponting is one my favourite batsmen and if you get the batsman complimenting you, ...

India forced to work hard for five-wicket win
2008-02-10 11:32:00
India 5 for 160 (Tendulkar 44) beat Australia 159 (Hussey 65*, Ishant 4-38) by five wickets

A five-wicket win chasing 160 might seem a comfortable victory but India made hard work of their success at the MCG, grinding out their first triumph of the CB Series with less than five overs to spare. Their youngest star Ishant Sharma set up the small target and their oldest warrior Sachin Tendulkar put their batting on track, but it was left to Rohit Sharma and their captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni to complete the task.
Rohit finished unbeaten on 39 and Dhoni was on 17 as Ricky Ponting ran out of attacking options with only four specialist bowlers in his line-up. The pair was in no hurry and for 13 overs India scored only in singles as they battled from 3 for 93 to 5 for 118. While the match remained alive, the c ...

First Production Tesla Roadster Gets Delivered, Driven (with VIDEO)
2008-02-06 06:58:00
Last Friday, Tesla chairman Elon Musk took delivery of the first production Roadster, which carries the name P1 (Production vehicle 1). The black coupe was flown in from Hethel, England, where all Teslas are being built alongside the Roadster’s cousin, the Lotus Elise. When the Roadster arrived at the start-up’s R&D facility in San Carlos, California, it was pushed into the garage and had its Thailand-produced battery pack installed. After the battery was fitted and charged, Musk led a pack of four other Roadsters on a quick drive and AutoblogGreen was able to procure a video of the run. For those of you who wanted to hear how the Tesla Roadster sounds while accelerating, we’ve embedded the video after the jump.
