After going wicketless in his first game of the CB Series, against Sri Lanka in Adelaide, Praveen Kumar said he couldn’t get much swing because he didn’t get the new ball. In the first final, against Australia in Sydney on Sunday, Mahendra Singh Dhoni threw him the new ball and Praveen responded by picking up the wickets of Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting. At the Gabba on Tuesday, Praveen went two better - to those two wickets he added Michael Clarke and began the process of Australia’s defeat. Later, he dismissed Brett Lee to break a dangerous partnership.
India had gone into the match without Ishant Sharma but any doubts over the potency of their attack were dispelled by Praveen’s understated brilliance. Bowling with vigour and accuracy ...

Shiraz Uppal this time composes with A.R. Rahman
2008-03-02 00:59:11
A.R. Rahman is big time! And there is no doubt about it, it wouldn’t be too far stretched to pen it down as he is renowned world over for his beats and music straight from his heart to the listener’s. The word is out through reliable resources that our boy, Shiraz Uppal has done a project with him. The song will feature in a Bollywood flick, and we all know when A.R. Rahman is associated with a movie, that means something. ...

Gilchrist hopes IPL will improve relations
2008-03-02 00:12:16
Adam Gilchrist believes the relationships between Australia and India cricketers will be boosted by the Indian Premier League after a season filled with controversy fuelled by both camps. The teams meet for two or three CB Series finals over the next week and the games will be Gilchrist’s farewell from international cricket.
He says the situation during India’s tour has “got out of hand somewhat” but he hopes the IPL will help heal some of the rifts, as players from both nations are thrust into teams together. “That’s where I see something like the IPL is going to be ground-breaking territory,” Gilchrist told the Sunday Telegraph.
“That’s going to be an opportunity for players around the world to get to meet, know and understand opposition cultures and customs. I think that’s going to be a very positive off-shoot of the IPL. Any world XI team I’ve ever played in there’s always been a great camaraderie in the room ...

Familiar rivals battle for silverware
The Preview by George Binoy in Kuala Lumpur

After an elimination process spanning two weeks, there’s little doubt the two best teams have made it to the Under-19 World Cup final. India and South Africa had contrasting preparations for this tournament but their performance in Malaysia has similarities.
India quickly established themselves as the team to beat through strong batting and clinical efforts in the field, while South Africa improved with every game. India are the only unbeaten team in the tournament, South Africa have lost only once - to India.
India’s strength has been the batsmen, most of whom have first-class experience; they didn’t lose more than five wickets until the semi-final against New Zealand; South Africa’s batsmen, barring a hiccup against India, have s ...

South Africa tighten chokehold on exciting day
2008-03-01 23:59:39
Bangladesh 60 for 3 (Razzak 8*, Nafees 7*) trail South Africa 583 for 7 dec (Smith 232, McKenzie 226) by 523 runs
Neil McKenzie’s 226 was South Africa’s batsman of the day … © AFP
A 53-year-old batting record broken, a maiden first-class double-century for a man back from the wilderness, a hostile spell that enthused life back into a dull affair, and two bowlers - one in his 20th Test, the other in his last - capturing 100 Test wickets: it all happened at the Chittagong Divisional Stadium. This also translated into another day of domination by South Africa who, backed by a total of 583 for 7, left Bangladesh limping at 60 for 3 by stumps.
Statistically the highlight of the day will remain the record 415-run opening partnership between Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie but, from a purist’s perspective Shahadat Hossain’s three-wicket burst after lunch, and the ensuing contest with Jaques Kallis, provided the first glim ...

CB Series ODI 11: Sri Lanka limp out of tri-series
2008-02-26 23:13:55
India 3 for 180 (Gambhir 64*, Tendulkar 63) beat Sri Lanka 179 (Kapugedera 57*, Kumar 4-31, Ishant 4-41) by seven wickets

Sri Lanka beat themselves in their must-win game as India eased into the finals with an emphatic seven-wicket win in Hobart. In what was a pathetic batting display, Sri Lanka skid from a comfortable 1 for 72 to a perilous 7 for 93, blowing their chances on a flat deck. A composed fifty from Chamara Kapugedera avoided a debacle but couldn’t take away the one-sided nature of the contest.
Chasing 180 was never going to be too much of a challenge for India, especially when Sachin Tendulkar started to cut loose. Gautam Gambhir added a polished fifty to what’s been a fantastic series, leaving Yuvraj Singh to add the final touches on a comprehensive win which got India a bonus point they no longer need. Sri L ...
