The tributes to Barbara Stanwyck
2007-07-16 08:41:00
Top news - "The tributes to Barbara Stanwyck this year, which marks the 100th anniversary of the year of her birth, started early and frequently," writes Edward Copeland. "Dammit, she deserves it. Still, I saved my salute until today, the actual 100th anniversary of her birth." The Odienator comments: "This is a great piece about a grande dame." Anne Thompson points to earlier tributes by Anthony Lane in the New Yorker, Kenneth Turan in the Los Angeles Times and Terrence Rafferty in the New York Times, notes TCM's Stanwyck-a-Thon and reminds locals that "the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has mounted its largest-ever exhibition dedicated to one star, featuring more than 70 posters and lobby cards from Stanwyck's pics." Peter Nellhaus revisits Roustabout: "That Barbara Stanwyck took the role may have been as a favor to producer Hal Wallis as well as an admission that at age 57, her choices of roles in theatrical films was limited.... Ex-football star, Corvino, dies in accident
2007-07-16 08:34:00
I was just trying to unwind from a long day and weekend of basketball at Cedar Beach and I noticed that someone had sent me some sad news.Stephen S. Constantine sent me an e-mail saying that Mike Corvino, a football star in the late 1970s at Pius X, died in a car accident in California on Saturday. Here's a snippet from Constantine's e-mail:Mike was a great guy, and a true friend of many of our guys in Easton. We have great memories of Mike, and as big as famous as he was, he loved his "Lebanese friends from Easton". Mike was Elaine Jacobs (Joe "Kota" Jacobs wife...), first cousin....and of course related to Joey, Shelly (Bartolacci) and Eric Jacobs....Mike will be buried in Pen Argyl, as funeral arrangements are incomplete.Corvino's careerAccording to Evan Burian's book "Sports Legends of the Lehigh Valley," Corvino was a tackle, nose guard and linebacker for Pius X, playing for Jack Ortelli and John Smith from 1975-78. He was an all-state and Big 33 selection and played at Marylan ...

Mariela Mollinedo; Fake braids disqualify Bolivia's beauty queen
2007-07-16 08:11:00
LA PAZ, Bolivia - A newly crowned Bolivian beauty queen was stripped of her title after judges discovered she had worn fake braids during a pageant celebrating Aymara Indian fashions. Mariela Mollinedo was chosen from 14 contestants Friday night for the title of Cholita Pacena 2007, an annual event featuring the elaborate style favored by La Paz's Aymara women, known as "cholitas." Dancing down the catwalk on a chilly winter night, the contestants wore bowler hats dripping with costume jewelry, shawls fringed and sequined in every color and layered skirts that flared as they spun to the blaring music. But after the contest ended and the crowd went home, judges discovered that Mollinedo's long black braids - an essential part of the cholita look - were extensions. Contestants, each representing a different market in the Andean capital, were required to greet the crowd in Aymara and answer a question about the history of Bolivia. Mollinedo's halting Aymara drew some whistles from the ...

The winner of a Bolivian beauty contest for indigenous women was stripped of her title moments after her coronation when judges noticed she was wearing false plaits. The Miss Cholita Pacena pageant, held in the Andean city of La Paz, seeks to instil pride in indigenous women who choose to wear the traditional dress of wide skirt, bowler hat and long plaited hair. But doubts over whether the winner was a genuine Cholita Pacena — the name for Indian women from La Paz — led judges to strip her of her victor’s sash and call for a rerun, said pageant organiniser. Not a bikini in sight, the toughest test for the 14 contestants was making a speech in the native Aymara language to prove their Cholita credentials. reuters ...
Stuart Broad called up for first Test at Lord's against India
2007-07-16 02:39:00
AFP AND AP, LONDON - Uncapped pace bowler Stuart Broad was called up yesterday into England's 13-man squad for the first cricket Test against India starting at Lord's on Thursday. Broad, 21, was included after fast bowler Stephen Harmison was rated "extremely doubtful" on Saturday for the opening match of a three-Test series after suffering a recurrence of a hernia injury while playing for Durham. Leicestershire's Broad, the son of former England opening batsman Chris, has played nine one-day internationals but has yet to play in a Test. He was included along with Lancashire quick James Anderson, the pair set to compete for the final place in England's starting side if, as expected, Harmison is unfit. England's chairman of selectors, David Graveney, said: "Stephen Harmison's hernia problem will be re-assessed by our medical team when the team reports for the first Test on Monday evening." Harmison bowled just five overs on Friday in Durham's ongoing match away to county champio ...

Academy-award nominated actress Toni Collette is pregnant with her first child. The Australian star of movies including About a Boy, Little Miss Sunshine and the Sixth Sense today confirmed she is expecting a child with husband Dave Galafassi. Asked whether she was pregnant, 34-year-old Collette replied: “Yes I am.” “We’re very happy. We are completely over the moon.” She said it was a bit of a case of life imitating art, after playing pregnant women in her recent films. “It is strange the last three films I’ve done I have been pregnant,” Collette said. “I’m just like, what is the universe trying to tell me. “But I think everything happens when it’s meant to.” ...
How to Conserve Water at Home and in the Workplace
2007-07-12 04:09:00
As we all know from school the earth’s water is constantly in movement, the water cycle or hydrologic cycle, describes the movement of water above, below, and under the earths surface. As the name ‘water cycle’ implies there is no beginning or end to this process and while water may change state from liquid, to vapour, to ice depending on the part of the water cycle that you are looking at, the amount of water on Earth remains constant over time. Unfortunately there are now more and more people on the planet to share this limited resource with, and the only way to deal with the growing shortage is to conserve as much water as possible by using what we have in the most responsible way.Even when water seems abundant it’s important that we all do our bit to conserve as much as possible, aside from the obvious benefits of conserving water in an effort to reduce costs to you or your business, the widely publicised environmental concerns should also give us all a real incentive to co ...
Methods for Locating Oil Reservoirs
2007-07-12 04:08:00
The oil that is commercially drilled throughout the world forms from tiny organisms that died long ago and have been forced deep into the earth over a period of millions of years. Oil is contained within deposits of rock which have a porous nature that has allowed them to “soak up” oil into the extra spaces within them. Oil is forced into the spaces in this porous rock over time by the natural movements of the earth, and enclosed within the area by surrounding non-porous rock through which it cannot permeate. In determining prospective places in which to drill for oil, companies such as Western Pipeline Corp must first determine as accurately as possible where such reservoirs of oil are located. Natural oil’s position deep within the earth makes the process of locating it challenging, and numerous techniques have been developed to help determine where to drill. Geologists are always seeking out new ways to determine which conditions are most indicative of oil reservoirs. Surface ...
Russia Attracting More Western Companies
2007-07-12 04:07:00
Where's Russia headed? One good place to get an answer was the just-concluded St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, which followed the strained G-8 meeting in Germany. According to Russian Economics Minister German Gref, upwards of 10,000 people from over 60 countries participated in the Forum, which this year was also done in partnership with the World Economic Forum -- otherwise known as Davos.I attended the forum and chaired the session on energy. I have subsequently been asked to answer some significant questions. What is the outlook for the Russian economy? What is the investment environment like currently? The political tensions, suspicion, and tough rhetoric between Russia and the United States and other members of the G-8 that were so apparent prior to that summit were mostly marked by their absence at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum. The commodities mainly evident in these very warm days and long white nights were optimism and confidence. With just nine months to go un ...
The Trans-alaska Pipeline
2007-07-12 04:06:00
After the discovery of oil in the desolate area of Prudhoe Bay, Alaska in 1968, the need for a system of transporting oil from the region became apparent. Upon considering several options, involved oil companies settled on constructing an elaborate pipeline system which would transport oil from Prudhoe Bay in the North Slope to the Port of Valdez, where it could be picked up by oil tankers for shipment to the lower 48 states. The project was to begin with the construction of a haul road to carry supplies and workers to the remote areas through which the pipeline would transport oil over miles of mountains, rivers and streams. While the pipeline system was determined to be the most economical option that would meet the logistical needs of the oil companies, it was not met without opposition from native villagers and environmental activists. Natives filed a law suit to prevent the haul road from being built through their land, and several environmental groups filed suit based on claims th ...
Water, Water Everywhere: Bottled Water Choices In Texas
2007-07-12 04:05:00
"Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink," or so the saying goes. Texas knows this well, with large swaths subject to extreme heat and drought inland, and non-potable salt water down in the Gulf. There may be water, but no one can drink it without treating it first. East Texas is richer in water resources than the rest of the state, but even this area experiences shortages, resulting in citizens voluntarily, and sometimes involuntary, rationing. Cities like Houston, Dallas, and Austin are particularly vulnerable in the event of a public water system failure, due to massive populations. Summer, as well, brings about vulnerabilities for many Texas communities, as rain decreases during this time and water usage increases. Keep yourself healthy -- and that health insurance company happy -- by using enough to satisfy your needs, but not so much as to be less than conscious about shortages. Not only has the Earth's fresh water supply been decreasing over the years, but so has its ...
